How many of you work at a job at says no weapons on it's grounds?

The common thread is that you should comply with what your employer requires of you or risk losing the job and/or your CCW license. Follow their rules..You would want someone to honor your rules in your house.

How did you take all these posts and boil them down to that? My thread didn't say that. My opinion is that you do what's right for you. You have to decide if your life is worth your job (or even a fine or prison) and if it is then you have to carry very discreetly and keep your mouth shut.

Most of these companies have these policies because they are forced on them by insurance companies and/or lawyers.

How many times have you been frisked at work?

Where I am, it's said not to have one in your vehicle. I don't. The person who would enforce that here has said that he won't ever check, and nobody should give him a reason to. I think that's the big thing here. If it's in your car, don't give anyone a reason to look in there.

It would be legal under the Castell rule to carry in your car(check state). Its legal for your customers(in the car). Mickey D is trying to cover their legal but* which they have a right to do but that ends at the point of a gun/knife for me(I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6). And if you loose the job...its mickey d's. Just keep your mouth shut, don't brag or do a show and tell.
A blockbusters here in Dallas was robbed at gunpoint...employees were herded in back where they were all shot...the perp walked around for a while and picked a few movies to take. The owner didn't want a gun their due to insurance and personal liability...the owner is safe...perp was never caught. The dead kids can't sue.

I'm a California transplant that loves Utah more and more everyday. Utah changed the law last year; in order for an employer to prohibit employees from keeping weapons in their cars on company property they must provide secure offsight parking as an alternative. I have a reserved spot, second from the entrance, and I can see my truck from my office. Life is good.

OK...Not ALL of the posts said to comply with the company rules.
I used to be a site safety mngr. for a major corporation and I had to convey and aid in enforcement of the rules such as the one being discussed. Never, in my 25+ years, did we ever go out and search someone's vehicle for a gun. The only reason that you would do that is from a complaint about it.
For what it is worth.....

shameful, but predictable

This comment you wrote made alot of sense to me... So now I cannot have my weapon on me at all when I leave my house from another state to go to work... If this is their policy then so be it, but I do not agree with the way it was handled. Tells me, these are the "anti gun" crowd who did not look into this matter but instead just gave a lame excuse to keep me from CCW. All I was doing was protecting myself and the company and now I feel like the CRIMINAL.
I am a NH res and work in MA.
Please give me your thoughts on this.

It's a darn shame. But that's what i was getting at: criminals, because they break the law, have greater freedom than we law abiding citizens do. That has to change! In your case, i doubt they looked at any law but rather were saying, absent a law that says otherwise, we CAN ban weapons from our parking lot and workplace. We need national reciprocity, and we need more states to legislate that employers cannot ban a gun properly stored in your car even on their premises.

The funny side of this is, our guns are not the ones they should be worried about because we don't shoot innocent unarmed people. ! In fact, one of our guns might someday save their butts if a real perp came through the doors, but they are blissful in their self-imposed ignorance. "It could never happen to me" they say. We at least are honest enough to say that, yes, bad things happen and someday it could happen to me.

Another part of my post said: "Doesn't that feel great? We have to go naked, and criminals carry wherever they want. We need to change those laws. Write your senators/legislators. Call them. Email them. Join the NRA. But keep on carrying, where you can".

I stand by it.

Meanwhile, everyone should have a safe - mine is cable locked to the seat frame, others acutally bolt into the cars floor - in the car/truck to secure your weapon for those times when you must put it away. For me, that means crossing into MA, RI or NY. I'm good in CT, VT and NH, plus 22 other states. And i write my senators and reps frequently too, advocating citizen's rights over those of criminals and opposing those stupid gun bills like one-per-month and micro stamping that have zero effect on crime. Short of runnning for office, that's the most we can do. If enough of us do it, the laws will change. I still believe in this country and in democracy, the current administration notwithstanding.

Good luck, and keep the fight going.

Yup,I've spent most of my working life employed at such places. The only jobs I've ever had where I could carry concealed or have a gun in the car while at work were when I was working at a gunshop and when I was self employed. That being said, I kept a gun in the car anyhow and, in the case of when I was working as a restaurant manager, I went out and got it before closing time. Being the only one with safe access at 2 AM is not a comfortable situation to be in. I'd rather have to hunt a job tomorrow than be dead tonight.

I had one manager over the years that seemed intent on 'flexing his authority' by demanding to search my car. I asked him if this was for a loss control investigation (it wasn't, but refusing to assist in a loss control investigation was grounds for immediate dismissal) and told him the only way he was going to have a search of my vehicle done was with a LEO doing the search and either enough probable cause to convince the LEO to do it or a warrant. He backtracked quick, fast and in a hurry and the matter was dropped.

I am retired, but work a couple days a week in a sporting goods store that sells a lot of guns and ammo. I have always carried a gun there and the owners are all for it.

I'm just going to lock in up in the car safe. As another person said on here, they can see their vehicle from their office window where they work......so can I. The door is right there too. If it were a really big problem leaving it secured in the vehicle, I guess I would be looking at alernatives further.
I think I will invest in a Leatherman for my belt in the mean time. Hmm, a knife or Box cutter that I use for shipping on Company proper... in MA.??? Oh my........

Yup.. Sucks... Can't carry in the office. I've been told by a friend that works in HR for the same company, not to have it in the truck. I do bring it and keep it in a small under the seat locking safe that secures to the seat mounting brackets with a cable. I added the safe for instances when I end up some place where it's illegal. Schools, municipal buildings, etc.. It happens..

Came in handy last week when I had to go and get my sister-in-law at a local county court house after a hearing.

Carry isn't technically allowed where I work, but I know of at least two people who do. According to the employee handbook, guns aren't even allowed on the premises, but I know of at least 2 more people who have guns in their vehicles. (Side note: The handbook doesn't prohibit carrying in company vehicles or on job sites.)

I must say, there's no way my employer is going to stop me from carrying in my car. If my employer ever resorts to searching employee vehicles, that will be the day I'm looking for a new job. I have nothing to hide (other than my gun, I guess), but my personal life (which includes my car) is none of my employer's business.

I've not decided 100% on how I feel about carrying inside the building. I have to say, I'm not sure I trust the company or my coworkers with my life in a defensive situation.

military and large international corporation

10+ years active US military, where we mostly know you can not carry. Large international corporation where the guidance is employees are prohibited from posessing weapons of any type.

I hope to pursuade change and am seeking a low risk way (i.e. not get fired) to educate the corporate leadership to permit lawful posession. The company sells to governments at all levels including LE and military sales.

Just came across this, and as I have said for some time, if your company has a no weapons policy, and you still want to carry, when at work keep it in your car and KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT,

Former employers were state gov't/taxing district so no guns allowed on the property. Except when asked to bring them in to take care of a problem. After Hurricane Andrew, there were loaded M-16s on the property. I worried more about floating pipe bombs than about gunfire.

First hand knowledge about what can happen sorry it is so long

I worked for Boeing in Seattle, Washington and they have a no gun on company property rule and you consent to allowing them to search your vehicle and person while on their property. I had to move to California for work and my Washington State CCW would be of no use there. After being in California for 3 weeks I learned that open carry was allowed as long as the gun was not loaded. Due to owning a Glock 19 with 15 round magazines I left my gun in Washington State. I was able to get 4 Glock 10 round magazines for a trade and $50.

Well I made the mistake of only removing 3 of the 4 empty 10 round Glock magazines from my backpack. When I went into work they search my bag and found the empty magazine.I was let in to work but 15 minutes later the security guard came and asked me to lift my shirt and turn around so she could check that I did not have a gun concealed in my waistband under my shirt. I had to pull up my pants legs to show that I was not concealing a gun near my ankles in my work boots. After that I walk back to the main desk where she told me to take it back to my hotel and leave it there. I go into work the next day to be pulled into a meeting room with Boeing security and the Air Force military security Who had lots of questions to ask me. I answered their question then was told to wait for them to type up a report of the meeting for me to sign. After I signed the report I was taken back to the meeting room where HR was present and the HR told me I was being suspend with pay till they were done with their investigation on whether I had carried a gun while at work. I was told that I had to go and meet with a psychologist in 2 days for him to make sure I was not a danger to myself or coworkers.

They then asked for my work badge and parking pass I told them the parking permit was left in the car where it belongs. They then took the company laptop and my work badge from me and escorted me out the doors into the parking lot where they searched the rental car for a gun but found none I then was allowed to reach into the car to hand them the parking pass. I was then followed by them till I was off of the military base.

Well after meeting with the psychologist he told me it was his opinion that I was fine to return to work.

The next day I was told I needed to return to Seattle and I would be given my work location after I arrived back in Seattle. Well on my drive back to Washington I got a call from the HR telling me that I needed to meet with the EAP rep so I could be cleared to go back to work. Well I was told that the psychologist in California was not acceptable for worker in Washington to use so I needed to go see the one in Tacoma . Well I forgot that I was to meet with him until the alarm on my phone went of while at the Shooting ranger. I packed up my gear and headed to meet with him. When I got to his office I checked to see if he had a no gun allowed sign posted he didn't so I decided to keep my gun at my side in its holster instead of placing it under the seat in my truck where someone could break in and find it.

After he told me the reason Boeing wanted me to see him[The reason as he stated was they being Boeing thought that I was going to go postal at work.] I asked him what does that mean? And he responded with going in to work to shoot people then myself as the postal employees did. I said that it would be impossible for me to go Postal due to I was not a USPS employee and to go postal by definition means that you would have to be employed by the USPS. I then asked him if he would have a problem with me being armed. He replied "Why are you armed now?" I answered yes I am I have a Washington State CCW license that allows me to carry a gun concealed I then lifted my shirt to show him. He then started to say "Who in their right mind brings a gun" That is where I said I am in my right mind and I did bring a gun. As I checked before entering your office to see if you had a no guns allowed sign up you didn't I also did not have time to stop at home and put my gun away before coming here to meet you. He then asked why I just didn't leave it in my car. I told him that I was driving a truck that has no trunk or a glove box that locked and for me to just leave a loaded gun in my truck where a thief could easily get it and use it in a crime did not sit well with me so I kept it where I knew it would be safe.

He then told me that no weapons of any kind are allowed in his office and if I was to bring any to the next visit he would have to refuse to see me. This is where I should have just let things be but didn't. I asked for him to define what he means by weapons. For my father and uncle both taught me what they learned in the army anything can be used as a weapon or equalizer if the person attacking is bigger then you. He responded with knives and guns, I then asked is that all you consider as weapons cause that would leave a lot of everyday items that if used properly could kill a person in 5 minutes or less. He then said "Like what?" I answered a number two pencil if you look at it it has a sharp point and is long enough to reach the major artery's in the human body. He then said you have thought about this a lot. I replied everyone who paid attention in high school biology knows where the major artery's are and what would happen if they were cut or punctured I then told him that when I came back tomorrow I would leave my gun at home along with my knives and pen and pencil. Well I received a call from him the next day at 2pm telling me he could not see me any more and that he gave the Boeing EAP the reason why. I called the EAP and told her that the Doctor had a problem with me exercising my second amendment right and did not want to treat me.

Well two weeks later I get a call from HR telling me to call in Friday for a phone meeting I call in and get told I was being fired for carrying a gun. I started to argue that they did not have the right to tell me that I am not allowed to carry a gun when I am not on their property. My union rep told me to save it and wait for his call. Well that was back in August of 2010 it is now Feb 2011 and still waiting for the arbitrator to decide who is at fault. I can not get a lawyer till the union and Boeing get done with the arbitration.

Below is the reply I got from my union rep

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding your grievance. I have talked with the company and they have revised their settlement offer to $100K. The company has made it clear to me that this is their final offer regarding your grievance and if it is not acceptable to you, they will await the decision of the arbitration hearing. As I have mentioned to you previously, if we go forward with arbitration, the arbitrator could completely disagree with our case and side with the company to uphold the termination with no award given to you whatsoever. The bottom line is that arbitration is never a sure bet even for really great cases.

So from talking to the lawyers they told me to come see them before signing any papers regarding a settlement to make sure I was not giving up my rights to sue them. In Washington state you can be fired at will but Boeing messed up when they told me they were firing me for having a gun. If they had just said your are fired I would have nothing to say but bye. Due to that and them labeling me as someone who will come in and start shooting coworkers then myself has pissed me off due to no place is going to hire me now with that being the reason I was fired from my last job. And due to Boeing laying off workers they will get jobs else where where my resume might come across their desk and then get thrown in the trash.

So I now I am looking for work while collecting unemployment waiting to get back to work at Boeing when they lose the arbitration. Though I expect after being back two months Boeing will lay me off and make sure my resume never gets accepted again for open jobs. So I refused their 100k offer due to it not being enough money for trying to violate my 2nd amendment right to bear arms when not on their property. And by Boeing having to admit they errored in firing me I will be able to list I was laid off when I apply for a new job else where

I would have taken the 100K Kasper.

The place I work now forbids OC for every one and CC for employees but specifically allows employees to have a gun in their car.

The last machine shop I worked at everyone carried and the employee handbook specifically allowed us to work on our guns on in the shop as long as it wasn't on company time and we "showed clear" when we brought the gun in.

Now I am 32 have 60K in debit that has to be paid most of which is student loans followed by medical bills and credit card. After taxes that would leave 75K minus the debit I owe would leave me with 10K and that would be gone in 6 months on medical supplies for I am a type one diabetic. And accepting the 100K would mean letting Boeing off the hook for calling me a nut job that is a danger to himself and his workspace. I for one will not let them soil my name and character for any amount of money. For there are a lot of things more important to me then money my name and character are among those things. Also I would not be able to find another high paying job due to them asking me to list my jobs for the last 5 years and the reason I am no longer working there. Unless I want to lie or withhold info while filling out the appellation My job choices are pretty much minimum wage jobs and now with the USA economy being bad those jobs are getting harder to find.

Sarcastic website? :)

I would like to see a website ... perhaps tongue in cheek, that lists all the victim disarmament locations in the country.

Association of Violent Attacker's "Work Safety Zone Map" www.avasafetyzone.com

or

"Where to Safely Rob" www.bestcrimelocs.com

Folks like us could enter our local schools, hospitals, businesses etc that require victims to be unarmed... in a few months there would be thousands of entries... might get some press and make a point... get owners to change their minds ... on the flip side, we could all be made out to be wackos! :) nah, really? lol

In Missouri it is not a criminal offense to store a firearm in your personal vehicle even on company property that the company declares a 'Gun Free Zone'. This is true whether you have a CCW or not.

However, if you violate the company policy by doing so they can terminate your employment for cause.

If you are a CCW holder and do not leave when ordered to by the property owner the police can if they choose issue a citation ($100 fine). Three citations in six months and your CCW can be revoked.

I work at a college in New York State. Just having a gun in my car on the grounds of an educational institution is a felony. It sucks.

I too work at a public university and state law prohibits carry on campus. A few years back one of the campus police was murdered by a crazy with a hatchet. So what does the state legislature do? Forbid concealed carry on campus state wide. Now one would think that if the campus state police can't even defend themselves, why on earth would the legislature forbid concealed carry on campus?

So I agree with rheaj, it sucks big time.
