Open carry incident in Nashville gets me detained 2.5 hour at gun point carried AK-47

I'm not sure what to type here or if I should make any statement at all...Yikes….

OK... Here goes…The orange tip is a bad idea. Making a real firearm look like a toy is a good way to send a message to law enforcement that I'll disguise my real gun in order to fool you. Makes you look like a nut job whose intent is to bend or distort the truth…

If attention was the intent you succeeded. A bright orange gun will get attention both bad and good. Some will wonder why you have a toy gun in the park. Some will be concerned if it’s a toy or not and will call someone to further investigate.

Wearing the camoflage, carrying the orange gun, and having the encounter recorded sounds to me like it was done to draw the attention. Mission accomplished. Not the first post on this site and others that have shown attention getters making a point.

Stunts like this will further draw the attention of the anti-gunners.
Now, I'm not one for drawing a conclusion about a group as a whole from one or two members of the group, but some folks will.

If possible open carry where permitted. Do so with some common sense. Orange tipped barrels... Yea… No...
Bring attention to the cause but do so with pride and with some common sense. If I had to choose a representative to portray the American gun owner I’ll choose the fundamentalist not the radical…

Due to inflation that’s my .5 cents need to keep the other 1.5 cents. Waiting for the Obama Economic Stimulus Plan to kick in and saving for a Dillon reloader:laugh:

+1. The whole thing sounds to me like a grand stand play by someone looking for a confrontation.

Are you being serious? Who made you the authority?
If he wants to carry a muzzle loader, while wearing revolutionary style clothing and a pink bow, who are you question that?

+1!

My thoughts on the situation:

The guy is a certified loon. This petty little stunt happened at a pretty sensitive time in TN, where new pro-carry laws have, and most likely will continue to be challenged. Way to make yourself into the Brady advocates' poster boy.

On the other hand, I'm sick of all these self-righteous folks in the carrying community questioning ANYONE'S need/authority/desire to carry any gun. It pisses me off that some macho dude with a penile-complex chastizes someone for carrying a .32. But on the same token, I get sick of those that say 2A IS A RIGHT, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.....then turn around and say, "Well, who are YOU to carry an AK?"

Dude, piss on you for SPRAYpainting (the overspray on the trigger is God awful) an otherwise fine gun, and making it an issue about the GUN and not the RIGHT to carry it.

And piss on everyone else that says he has no need to carry it....well, a normally stock AK, anyway.

I tend to bottom-line my feelings about an individual by asking myself whether I would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with this guy in a fight and/or whether I trust him to cover my six. In general, I don't mind "radical" people, as long as they pass my "smell test". So...you may be outspoken (I don't mind), open carry your AK (I don't mind), hell, open carry your .50 cal sniper rifle (I still don't mind)...as long as I can trust your judgement when the SHTF.

If, however, you're prancing about in camo and jackboots with an AK that you've spray-painted orange, I got questions about your cognitive processes, think you are looking for attention (I think we all already have got plenty of that) and would not be completely comfortable with you behind me, or representing me in any way.

I want my brothers (and sisters)-in-arms to be thoughtful, smart, reasonably fit, well-trained, and of SERIOUS bent of mind. I will not necessarily exclude you from The Cause, but if you're spray painting your weapons bright orange, and LOOKING for trouble, you're gonna have to grow up a bit before I trust you as a level-headed patriot brother.

That said, I support the RTKBA and if you want to paint your weapons bright orange and bait the cops, have at it.

As I have read everyone's comment on this matter, It seems to me that although it was a legal weapon to have, 31 rds was a
little excessive to have on one person in one one mag. I think this was clearly a poor decision on your part to test the limits
on gun laws in a state park. You made people that have done nothing to you feel uneasy with your presents and that may friend is not what this about. You did nothing wrong but make a poor decision on what to carry to the park.and what does
poacher's have to do with it, where you looking to get in a gun fight ? This how we as gun owners and CCW holders get a bad name from the press and the general public. SA1911

When I carry my Glock 17 and a spare mag I have 34 rounds + 1 in chamber...

This type of bullshit is certainly not helpful to the cause.

“There are three types of men. Some learn by reading, a few learn by observation, and the rest have to piss on the electric fence to find out for themselves.” --- Will Rogers

When I carry my Glock 17 and a spare mag I have 34 rounds + 1 in chamber...
When I carry my Colt Officer's, I always have at least 19 rounds and most times will have 37 and might have over 50 rounds to ballast my pockets in teh wind.

I have only one issue. The whole world "knows" the look of an AK47 as the terrorists weapon. So there was a tall steep hill to climb if you're going to open carry any AK variant.

It seems to me to be a stunt intended to promote open carry. But what it really does is encourage L.O.L. to call for restrictive laws when they are told by the police that it is legal.

Cool it until after the SCOUS rules on the McDonald case, please [and Kansas has the vote on revising our State Bill of Rights].

Let's think past lunch...

A lot of us carry more than 30 rnds between the carry weapon and the backup mag/mags...The amount isn't an issue. The energy level sort of is. 7.62 x 39 Russian (especially with steel cored military ammo) is like the energizer bunny...it keeps going and going and going.

You have a moral responsibility for everything that comes out of your gun. Be it a water pistol, pellet gun, or a 50BMG. Overpenetration is a bad thing. No one here will argue that point. Not enough gun is equally bad in my opinion. Carrying a known vest buster will definitely get cops attention in an adverse manner.

When I lived in Alaska...I never went into to woods with less than a 12ga Mossberg 500 of a .45ACP or both.
There was a valid need for that, big freakin bears that eat humans! TN does not have a lot of bear attacks...I am not saying it couldn't happen just that it isn't that prevelant.

Yes you do have the legal right to carry it as advertised but again why did you paint it to look like a toy? Are you trying to cause an issue with the cops? Are you trying to get pepper sprayed/tazed so you can cash in on a big fat payday? Are you that in dire need of attention? What drove your thought process? Please...inquiring minds want to know!

lol dude i'd take a beating for some PD cash :pleasantry: my city sets aside millions to settle out of court...

jk jk, I too want to know the answer.

I really don't see the problem. I carried the orange AK downtown Franklin Tennessee for about 1.5 hours yesterday at noon. I walked by the police station a couple of times and the County court house once. I didn't have one cop stop me or even look at me that I know of. A few people asked what I had and why I needed it. I told them it was an AK-47 pistol for self defense. One asked if it was legal and I told her it was and that if she was interested she could buy one to carry. :pleasantry:

Unfortunately Tennessee is a difficult State to carry in. There are a lot of laws that just do not seem to make sense. For example TCA39-17-1314 seems to allows cities to enforce their own gun regulations if the ordinance was prior to 1986. I don't know if anyone with a permit has been cited for any ordinance violation, but I do not want to be the first especially carrying an AK. So, I have to make sure where I carry is absolutely permitted to carry. I think that is being responsible.

Basically, it's none of your damned business if he has 31 rounds or 310. There's no law defining excessive, it's just your opinion. There were no limits to test. The law is the law.

I would have no issue with this if he had just fought it out privately, perhaps with a well-placed letter to the police, a letter to the editor, or a personal rebuttal to the sensationalist local news. My beef is the fact that he's running around with a gun painted in the same way toys are, and he's been on every internet forum with "gun" in its name bragging (??) about the instance.

He is an attention whore, plain and simple. This is not how a 2A advocate behaves.

Furthermore, 2A advocates don't go around second-guessing each other regarding what each person decides to carry, so long as they are within the law.

You must not have a job if all you're doing is pacing around suburban Nashville looking to get arrested. It reminds me of that douchebag that came on here with his video showing him getting arrested in Ohio. Attention whores. No more, no less.

LOL he's going to get a huge sum from Ohio i'm sure.

You confuse me- you seem to go back and forth on your position...which is it?

I know I might seem a little unhinged, but here's a slightly clarified position:

Guy in park with AK47, :pleasantry: pistol variant :pleasantry: , with permit, where legal to openly carry....yay, good for him.

Painting said pistol in the same fashion as toy guns, then parading around every internet message board bragging about your exploits.....douchebaggery.

Busting this guy's balls because he only seems out for attention (or a payday)....good for us.

Busting this guy's balls because he chooses to carry an AK47, :pleasantry: pistol variant :pleasantry: ....boo for you.

Does that help?

I understand that you may carry 35 rds of pistol ammo on you, but I don't understand ammo that has the ability
to travel up to two miles to be use to protect your self in a park. Although the gun was manufactured as a pistol it still uses military ammo and not pistol ammo. Don't get me wrong here Its not the ammo or even the gun that is in question its the fact he drew attention to him self by having this type of weapon on him. The whole
point here is not to scare people to where they don't feel safe in a parks .Just think how you would feel if your wife was out walking in that park and saw a man with this type of gun on his chest not knowing if he was crazy
or a law abiding citizen, This day and time Women are getting raped an even KILLED in the parks.

I carry a SA 1911 A1 for protection and not to intimidate people . I'm for the Rights of the ALL GUN owners..

I carry a ruger LCP .380 for protection and not to intimidate people. I'm for the Rights of the ALL GUN owners unless they carry something bigger than a .380.
