Latest school shooting

Hi Peggy, With the present system in place, of course it isn't going to deter anyone. The magic word is "prosecute" and do it quickly, not only the shooter, but the irresponsible firearm owner, as well. Prosecute, prosecute, prosecute, I shall make it my new mantra. Until the law starts prosecuting the firearm owner and responsible party for these shootings which are becoming common occurrences. We can expect more of the same medicine we have been getting. Also, the media must do an "in your face report" until everyone gets the message, America isn't going to take home-grown terrorism any longer. Until this happens, I wholeheartedly agree with you, it will not deter anyone. My opinion may not count for much, but I believe schools should be a place of learning, where students are safe and not a war zone!

You put WAY too much faith in government to pass the right laws or enforce them equitably sans any anti-gun agenda in the cases they choose to prosecute. You also put too much faith in media in demanding "in your face reporting" on a subject which they have yet to report even the slightest bit accurately or honestly on.

My high school was a place of learning and not a war zone. What I learned the most from, and have used in my daily life ever since, was being on a rifle team that traveled up and down the West Coast competing with other high schools that still had shooting sports as an elective. I had access to my rifles and ammo since I was 11 or 12 years old.

Access to firearms is not the problem, bad parenting is, but government as a surrogate parent is the worst idea I can imagine. Raise your kids right and fulfill your parental responsibilities, and don't ask government to impose one-size-fits-all restrictions on child access to guns, because believe me, they'll be happy to oblige imposing many more restrictions than you're contemplating or would even imagine have anything whatsoever to do with childhood access to weapons. In reality, whatever laws they come up with, will have very little to do with childhood access to guns, and everything to do with limiting access by everyone.

You're doing nobody (except the Brady Bunch et al) any favors by looking for a government solution to bad parenting.

Well, at least it's being confined to Denver. Toughest gun laws - the most crime. You'd think a liberal somewhere would connect the dots...

Its not just Denver area, what about NYC, how many shootings go on there every day (that we never hear about) and there gun laws are not tough there insain.

Hi maybejim! As for role models for the American youth, I can say the media is mostly the blame and has changed things in the last few decades, and not for the better. It seems like the government agency which regulates the media should step in and do more concerning violent video games. Not only violent games, but movies as well. Even today at lunchtime, I saw more violence than should have been allowed on daytime tv, sure the media keeps throwing gasoline on the fire, giving the teenagers some really great role models. I almost couldn't believe they were airing this particular show in this time frame. Actually if I was in charge of the network the show would be cancelled last week. Pretty sure someone's pockets are being stuffed with cash, as we speak. This alone is just one aspect of what is wrong in America and the people who should be handling this one part, seems to be turning and looking in the opposite direction.

Violent video games and movies?
Please don't be another clueless cog.

I sincerely hope that someone begins to see the light and allows properly trained teachers to begin to be armed and ready when the next nutjob comes to school armed wanting to kill everyone in sight.

You know, I am sick and tired of posters who continue to frame their responses regarding armed teachers with the words, "properly trained," as if schools are somehow different than any other place of employment where people carry. They should be able to carry in school for one reason - because it is their right to defend themselves. Period. I carry in shopping centers where I am surrounded by customers; I don't see anyone asking that I be required to go through some specialized training before I be allowed to do so, yet the moment schools are mentioned there is always someone in the crowd who is willing to let teachers carry as long as they are "properly trained." As I said in another post, I'm not asking that my wife be trained to go from room to room clearing the building. I am asking that my wife have the ability, if that bad guy chooses HER room as his next kill house and stands framed in the doorway of her room, to leave him lying in that doorway unable to hurt another person ever again.

You want teachers to act like SWAT teams and clear buildings? Fine - then train them. Frankly, I don't think many of us here are actually pushing for that - as intriguing as the idea might be.

Just let them carry, as is their God-given RIGHT.

I sincerely hope that someone begins to see the light and allows properly trained teachers to begin to be armed and ready when the next nutjob comes to school armed wanting to kill everyone in sight. Instead they'll get up on their soapboxs and call for some more dumbass gun control laws. I know this is a waste of my typing skills, but I can at least hope.

Sorry, I don't agree. Required training IS a "dumbass gun control law".

For everyone on usa carry I am not changing my mind. Eventually things will change just give it a little more time, and a few more school shootings. Prosecution for negligence is the way to go!!!

The comment was about what's happening to COLORADO. In that reference, "Denver" is accurate...

Old news, but news nonetheless. They may carry for two more years, until legislators have a look at new law for arming teachers/staff specifically, or not at all.

At least they shot-down AG McDork's political grandstanding, for the moment (pun intended). I graduated from this school over 40 years ago. Talked with a former classmate who was getting info for the 40th reunion, and evidently there are multiple schools on this campus now. Urban sprawl in a small town.

You don't have to change your mind, but you're gonna have to come up with some strict guidelines about what will constitute negligence. Kids are smarter than some might think. No matter how securely you store your guns, all your teen has to do is learn safe cracking online, and they have as much time as they need to figure it out. And are you still liable if professional thieves break in while you're on vacation and clean you out? I know I can't afford the kind of safe that is impossible to get in to. Plus, NY or CA will gladly take this as an informal type of gun control... make the requirements for gun ownership so expensive that you'd need a second mortgage.

NYC's gun laws aren't tough?! Where exactly have you been hiding? NYC is CONFISCATING the firearms of legal firearms owners! They have been conducting nearly a MILLION random, unConstitutional stop and frisks of mostly innocent citizens each year to try to find illegally carried firearms. Laws aren't tough enough.... Right.

We're all on the same page. He means that the laws aren't tough, they're INSANE.

The thing is, especially with school shootings, these liberals and Government officials, dont actually care, look at it like this, their kids go to school and are surrounded by armed men, protected to the teeth with weapons and security, however, the General public have 1 police officer who is usually on some sort of stress leave from the road, or an officer who likes a regular schedule and becomes so lax it isnt funny. We need to start privatizing security [armed security] no less than 4 officers under the supervision of 1 police officer. OR let the teachers carry if they have the proper state permit. I will be sending letters to EVERY school district in my county and will be sending a letter to my Governor urging for laws to be over turned and to allow this. I will also send a letter to every congressman and senator in my state, we all need to unite under a banner and let the Government know a good guy with a gun is the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun no matter how much of a background check is done, or what kind of law is passed, BGs with Guns will always choose the Gun Free Zones. History repeats itself in the most disturbing ways.

I remember when and why you came here superprincess. You had been robbed the night before. I don't recall if it was one or more teenagers that robbed you, but let's just assume a similar scenario to the one that brought you here with a couple of extra assumptions thrown in. It was three teenagers, and this time you're armed. Let's say they range in age from 13 to 15. They surprise you and you can't get to your weapon before they beat, rape, and rob you of everything you have on you, including your weapon. Later that night the three go on a killing spree with your weapon. You're in the hospital getting the rape kit processed when your local Sheriff comes in, cuffs you to the bed and informs you that since you couldn't adequately control who had access to your weapon, you will now be prosecuted under the law that you lobbied to get passed. Doesn't matter that what you lobbied for had nothing to do with being overpowered and your gun stolen from you, the law was written so poorly, or enforced so unfairly, that it swept you and thousands of other innocent victims of circumstance up under its auspices.

All anyone is trying to tell you is be careful what you wish for when what you wish for involves government. They lay in wait for useful idiots with good intentions to open the door to more onerous and restrictive gun laws. Sarah Brady is one such useful idiot. Don't become Sarah Brady out of blind sympathy for the parents of murdered children.

The instance of privately-owned guns being used in a crime is somewhere in the sub-1% range. You pass a "gun-nanny" law that holds the lawful owners of those weapons responsible for the illegal actions of a third party who stole them or used them without the owner's permission, and you restrict 99.xx% of all gun owners for the actions of an infinitesimally minuscule number of criminals who steal them and then use them to murder or injure innocents. At the point at which you get the law you're advocating for here passed, you become an enemy to the 2nd Amendment and the Constitution.

Be careful what you wish for. This government will be all too happy to grant your wishes and put you at odds with everyone who helped you arm yourself against victimizers in this degenerate society. You are lobbying against our interests. You will not find much support for that stance among any large group of informed gun owners.

Some times what we do is admirable yet not adequately acceptable as enough, especially when it comes to protecting human life, i.e. school children in our charge for education purposes.

Resource officer on the job in Carroll schools - News - Times Reporter - New Philadelphia, OH

Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams announced last week that he has hired a resource officer to serve in the Carrollton, Malvern and Conotton Valley school districts.
~
Larry Carver began his duties Dec. 5.
~
"This is a great asset, not only to our schools, but also to our county," Williams said. "This will be funded through the sheriff's office. I am going to step up to the plate and pay for this, because this will make our schools safer and a better place for education."
Carver says he talks to the kids like they were his own.
~
"Safety is primary," said Carver. "They want me to diversify already. The principals and superintendents have some good ideas that will work well with the students. I will be in one school in the morning and another one in the afternoon."

No one get me wrong, I am glad to see someone armed in these schools, but it is far from enough to protect our children.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Carrying a shotgun, a machete, a bandolier of ammunition and a backpack with three incendiary devices, Karl Halverson Pierson entered Arapahoe High School and launched 80 seconds of terror as he hunted his debate coach, who was also the school librarian.
~
New details emerged Saturday as authorities described the country's latest school shooting.
~
As soon as he entered the building Friday, Pierson fired a round down the hallway and another from point-blank range that critically injured one student. He fired a third round down the hall and entered the library, where he fired again and set off one of the Molotov cocktails, igniting bookshelves.
~
As fire and smoke poured through the room, Pierson fired a fifth round and went into the back corner of the library, where he fired his last shot, killing himself.
~
With the timeline established for this latest school shooting efforts like those of Carroll County Sheriff Department aren’t going to be enough to save our children. But are designed to appease the public with feel good ideas of we are doing our best.
~
Allowing teachers, law abiding citizens to go armed in defense of their charges during school hours and during after school activities would be classified as us, we the people doing our best.

What you are not seeing or hearing from the MSM, is that this guy was an avowed socialist who often wore sickle and hammer tee shirts to school. Oh, and he was a rabid anti-gunner.
