How to handle a traffic stop


Imagine that... a police officer recommending that you submit to their "authority". IF you are in a state that requires that you inform an officer of a legal activity that you are engaging in, then yes, this is a helpful post. For those of you not in a socialist, you must tell them about your legal possessions state, keep quiet about it. There is no good, nor any safety that comes form revealing that you have a firearm to an officer, that hasn't asked, and you aren't obligated to inform.

When I get off this deployment, if ever, I am going to make a video about how to handle a trip to the convenience store. You walk in and approach the counter with both hands visible and your CCW permit in one hand. "Excuse me, but I would like you to know that this is my concealed pistol license and I have a concealed pistol on my belt at 3 o'clock. How would you like me to proceed?" That way the clerk knows right away that you are a good guy vetted by the state and only want to buy coffee and not rob the store clerk who has a tough job, just wants to go home safe to their family at the end of their shift, and doesn't know who the person is who just walked through the door or their intentions. It's just a matter of courtesy and respect, right?
 
We carry firearms every day to protect ourselves in the very unlikely event that one of the 100's of people we pass every day in public just might be a criminal who chooses us as a target or is a mass shooter. How many people live their whole lives and never have a situation that would cause them to present a gun in self defense, let alone shoot at someone? Why is it so hard to just keep one's mouth shut as protection in the very unlikely event that the one police officer out of 100's of good ones just might be the one that is going to take the opportunity that you offer them to take your gun from you, handle it needlessly, place themselves, you and innocent bystanders at unneeded risk from a negligent discharge, run the serial number of the gun to see if it is stolen and give you your gun back unloaded with all the rounds removed from the magazine - treating you like they have suspicion of you being a criminal because you attempted to prove to them up front that you weren't?

Festus, c'mon man, how does a staged event whose only intent is to promote Ayoob's and Gresham's points of view help people in the real world? And I don't know if you caught it or not, but as far as I'm concerned, Ayoob has trashed his credibility forever with Link Removed in which he can't seem to find a thing in the world wrong with cops, doctors and nurses putting a man through 14 hours of multiple invasive rectal exams in New Mexico. All for what? He was first pulled over for a rolling stop coming out of a Walmart, and then the cop didn't like his attitude, that's it. He made up some phony premise for illegally searching him and his car and then when he didn't find anything, said his posture or stance or some such asshattery looked like he was clenching his butt cheeks, and the cop sought and got a warrant on that basis and his lying partner's statement that the guy had been "known" to hide drugs up his butt, for a forced cavity search that included multiple digital (fingers) examinations, a few forced enemas, multiple X-rays, and finally, a freakin' colonoscopy, all finding no contraband, and to top it off, the hospital was outside the jurisdiction that the warrant was written for, and by the time they got to the colonoscopy, the warrant had been expired for more than 3 hours anyway, and the hospital billed the 100% innocent citizen, but Ayoob can find no fault with any of that.

Massad Ayoob is the last one I will ever take advice from again. He has outed himself as exactly the kind of cop that everyone should fear is out there walkin' around free when they don't deserve to live among civilized human beings.

I'd prefer to talk about which caliber has one shot stopping power, or better yet, which is the best caliber for self-defense. :sarcastic:

Also interesting to note: usually the same people who will say to never use handloaded ammunition for self-defense because a prosecutor will use it against you in court are also the same people who won't take the simple step to protect themselves of keeping their mouth shut about their guns when a police officer stops them. You know, just exactly like Mas Ayoob.


I'm a rebel all the way. I carry with handloaded ammo, won't ever tell a cop about my gun when I am not required to, and I open carry. So clearly, what is going to happen is that some bad guy is going to shoot me first, the police officer is going to show up and shoot me again when he sees my gun because I didn't wave my CPL in his face and declare my gun, and then the prosecutor is going to say it was all my fault for carrying handloaded ammunition - looking for trouble - and I will have to apply for Obammacare from the county jail and the website won't work and I'll have to pay that fine for not having insurance when my normal company cancels my policy. And I will get a Christmas card from Mas Ayoob that says, "SEE! I TOLD YOU SO!!!!"

Wrong again, 'Panky. He's a cop who has outed himself as supporting the kind of torture tactics that Saddam Hussein was known for, which means he supports the utterly failed "war on drugs," which means he doesn't support the notions of states' rights, individual liberty or due process.

What do you support, 'Panky? Besides latching onto one or two forum members and following them around nipping at their heels like a retarded Chihuahua?

Don't be ridiculous. Convenience store clerks (or the counter help at Burger King) aren't cops, and are therefore utterly unworthy of any such shows of "respect".

what causes you to think that a cop is any different from any other person?

Umm....His point was to be ridiculous. Using absurdity to illustrate absurdity is a valid literary tool. It is just as absurd to think it prudent or necessary to spontaneously disclose to cops as a sign of "respect" as to assert that disclosing to counter-help is a sign of respect.

You're right that it was ridiculous, but it seems as though you missed that it was intentionally ridiculous to make the very point about cops that you picked up on about the counter-help.

I replied in the other post...deanimator has been one of the more informed person on this website about police brutality, and speaks against their tyrannical behavior on a regular basis. I believe he was being sarcastic in that post.

I was recently stopped for speeding in Memphis TN. (I wasn't, but that's another story.) I gave the officer my carry permit along with my license, registration and insurance card. He examined it and handed it back to me and proceeded to write my ticket. No problems. If you want to challenge their authourity then you are going to have problems.
