Are Warning Shots a Good Idea?

IMHO the BG has already had many "warnings" before he came at me or mine. The BG knows or at least should know the laws he is about to break or has already broken when he threatens my family or me.

So the last warning he will get from me, if there is time, will be, "Don't make me shoot you!"

The door he broke down or the window he pried open was the warning shot.
 
There is no situation I can imagine in which I'm likely to find myself in which a "warning shot" would be anything but a bad idea, if not wildly irresponsible.

By the time the gun comes out, you've made yourself an immediate and credible threat of deadly force. At that point, the only shots are going to be at your center of mass.

Bullets don't go into a black hole when you fire them. In Ohio, if it's a good shoot, my assailant (plus mutant family, "posse", etc.) is barred BY LAW from recovering damages. If I stupidly fire a shot NOT aimed at my assailant, I own the consequences. Anybody I hit (or whose property I hit while trying to protect my assailant from the consequences of his own actions) OWNS me. I have NO immunity of ANY kind.
 
I am not a cop. I have no duty sworn or otherwise to confront, pursue, detain, arrest or protect the public in general. The only beings I have a solemn duty to protect and defend are my family, those who are important to or loved by me, and myself. I am too pretty to fight, too old to run and armed with a Browning Hi Power, a pistol that I first fired more than half a century ago and be assured I have become fairly proficient with it.

If a person or persons were to threaten me or mine with bodily injury or death -STOP!- is the warning I will issue. If that does not elicit an immediate retreat you can bet your a$$ BANG!-BANG! will be the next sounds heard, and I'm pretty good with that center of mass thing. I owe NOTHING MORE to one who means me harm.

So NAVY, go ahead and amuse yourself with your invidious remarks if that makes you feel important, and Firefighter, Blues and Charles, if you're that comfortable with your collective dogmatic assumptions you are all far more diminished than I.

I think you misunderstood navy's comment...

He wasn't calling you out, he was calling the police out for escalating to deadly force too fast and too often in recent news.

I will not issue a stop warning if my family is in danger. My response to a threat to my family sounds like this...

I never really noticed this part... Wth to them so long to render first aid? Maybe all those "do not hesitate" targets took up all their first aid training time.

It would appear that for the third time in less than 24 hours I'm being called out for either something I didn't say, didn't intend to imply, or didn't know I was saying and/or implying.

What might be my "dogmatic assumptions" in the post I made in this thread? I've been on this site since just a day or three after it was opened and never noticed any extended threads about warning shots until the phony meme promulgated by media, anti-gunners and know-nothing, do-gooder pro-2A'ers was born out of the passage of a bill in FL under the rubric of being a "warning shots bill." It was brought up here in April of this year in this thread first, then again in June in this thread, and now the phony meme is being recycled again by Massad Ayoob when nobody who knows a single thing about good tactics has ever put forth the notion that warning shots are a good idea, including the law that all the ruckus got started over. If you want to know what I think about the bill, and/or the idea of using warning shots, then read either of those linked threads.

What I am "dogmatic" about is evaluating legislation, laws, politicians, cops - whatever - based on the actual intent or actual actions of the legislation or people being evaluated. I have no tolerance for hyping up a phony meme about "warning shots" when the only thing the bill actually did was reduce the risk for CC'ers of being arrested, charged and possibly convicted for their gun showing either accidentally, or if drawing their weapon was enough to make the threat stop being a threat before having to pull the trigger. The old law encouraged people to fire once their weapon was drawn, or even just shown while breaking cover and acquiring a grip in preparation to draw, or else suffer severe legal consequences akin to the most draconian of anti-brandishing laws. All the new law did was give CC'ers wider latitude to decide when, if, or not to fire, and the words "warning shot(s)" were not in the bill anywhere.

So please do enlighten me about what "dogmatic assumptions" you fantasize would be appropriate to expect from me on the "warning shots" "issue." Pffft.

Who are all these new people? New posters with 50 posts hammering people like they've known them for years. Something stinks in IP land. When banning a poster the IP address should get blocked too. Most aren't smart enough to know how to reset an IP address.
 
VPN's are so common it's nearly impossible to effectively block by IP address. There are several free vpn's that anyone could use. I have a commercial VPN I use for business purposes as I'm often using a laptop away from office and need to mask the actual location for client confidentiality purposes. I just use the same local masked IP because it is only important that my online activities not be tracked back to my client's IP but if I wanted to do so I could pick an IP from just about any major city in the world. It also works on my cell phone as well. The service is called, appropriately, "HideMyAssPro". I pay $60/yr (they charge $130/yr but they have lots of sales and I have always managed to renew during a sale).

One can block the entire range of IP's on the VPN. It's a pool and the external numbers are assigned by the ISP. Doesn't sop someone from going to McDonalds and logging-on though. A common practice among pedophiles is to pull into an apartment complex and logon to an unsecured router. They do their thing, disconnect and leave. Should it be investigated LE shows-up at some innocent person's home looking for a pedophile. Everyone should ensure their routers are secured.
 
aside from anyone accessing an internet forum, the issue I was trying to make is that if a warning shot would defuse a potential life taking issue, then In my opinion I would take the warning shot..

The reason I bring this up.. is because I had an incident years ago where 3 black guy got out of a car, one with either a baseball bat or a pipe it was 2 AM and they had me blocked in behind a truck and a cement island. It was summer, windows down, and these guys pulled up next to me with blaring obnoxious rap music.. I turnd to look at them and with a disgusting look I turned to face forward. one of them yelled over " hey white boy what are you looking at "? Not to be intimidated I said.. " Not much " .. at that point three of the four in the car exited from the right side of their car came around the front of their car and got to the front of my car. when they exited the car and I was trapped, I ran the question, fear of my life? no place to run...I must have done that ten times in 2 seconds. Blocked, no where to go , three your thugs with a weapon verbally saying. we are going to fucx you up white boy. At that point I grabbed my Colt nickel 6 inch Python 357. exited the car and drew down on the guy with the bat ( pipe) .. I Yelled "get back in your car or you are dead". at that point they backed up and got back in the car and left... Had I fired a warning shot , which never entered my mind, I think the same effect would have happened. I was ready to pull the trigger on the guy with the pipe.. That night did not cost me a thing...had I pulled the trigger, though justified, it would have haunted me, legally and psychologically. Giving them the option to leave ( aka a warning ) could have been accomplished with a warning shot in this incident.. because those three thugs were smart enough that you don't bring a bat to a gun fight. If you are a responsible person , you do not want to kill anyone.. if you can get away from that life changing event with a warning shot, I say do it. Of course this is my opinion and have to live with that. A random shot in the air would not be my warning shot choice. but a controlled shot...

I think warning shots are a bad idea. With a finite amount of ammo, you may need that bullet later. You will likely be in close range and the criminal would get that time to advance. If pointing the gun at the criminal is not enough of a warning, then they deserve to be shot.

I stopped reading right there. You need a good PP course. The first and primary tools of PP are AWARENESS, AVOIDANCE, DETERRENCE, DE-ESCALATION and WITHRAWAL. How many did you follow? Keep your mouth shut. Never answer. You must know better than give a "look" or make a comment to a car full of hoodrats. Had you defended yourself the story would have been twisted around, you'd be labeled a racist, have had an enormous legal bill and would probably never be the same. Didn't this just happen in FL where I guy shot at a car load of punks with blaring music. His claim of self-defense failed.

If you partake in the escalation of an encounter some states not allow you to raise "defense of justification," You may be considered a "mutual combatant." Best to never have to cross that issue. Would it have been legal? Possibly. Probably. But it would destroy your life.

I was in anew corvette, the one thing you don't do is coware in the face of aggression or intimidation.. those four guys, pulled right up to my right side and almost hit me.. they had me blocked in, they were 40 feet from the light they stopped two car lengths from the place they should have stopped, they target me and wanted to do some damage.. you cant picture this area but it was in a very lonely area 300 yards from the airport.. it was acres and acres of mossy swamp land.. no one around and it was 2 O'clock am..I wont coware to intimidation, you can stop reading all you want but in my experience.. those who put their eyes down and are easily intimidated, are the ones targeted as victims.. I make contact with everyone.. and when these guys pulled up and almost hit me, I didn't know who they were or what was happening , when I turned to see them and heard the music I saw 4 thugs in a car that looked very much like they wanted a piece of my ass. when I said " Not much, it was in an effort to see if my confidence was enough to sway them from further aggression, I would do the same thing again given the same situation.. there was no where for me to go...the area around the airport has many timed lights with left turn lanes and long lights, with access lanes to departing flights and arriving flights and to long term parking etc. at @am the airport is very slow and the roads are not crowded.. When you say things like " I stopped reading right there ".,. it only tells me that you are narrow minded.. consider I had three thugs get out of a car with the intention to kick the shot out of me with a pipe or bat... and what happened?? Nothing.. I dibnt have to shoot anyone, I didn't have to call the cops.. I didn't get in the news paper with my name , the minute those guys left, that incident was over.. I did it right.... they had already made up their mind when they pulled next to me, that they wanted to screw with some white guy in a nice car, out in the boon docks.. maybe the wanted to jack me, maybe they wanted to rob me. Me cowering down would have only fortified their attempt to intimidate me, and give up my car or my money, without a struggle... IM guessing you would have let them rob you and take your car, and maybe take your life... they had me blocked in. against a 12 inch high cement island on my left. it was an isolated left turn lane, I could not back up to escape because the lane was only big enough for four cars or a tractor trailor ( which was in front of me and one car.. behind me was the cement median that separated north from south lanes. Had I not be armed, I would have been seriously injured and maybe dead. IM not even sure why IM wasting my time trying to explain that situation.. this is an internet forum.. with many many people who would not know what the right thing to do would be.. most here think they are John Wayne, and have the ability to kick anyone's ass.. and can shoot the eye out of a flea. The first time I shot a man I pissed my pants, and was not able to sleep.. I had plenty of tears to go along with the taking of another life.. I was 20 years old...
