How do you answer -

There is a big difference In "Do you carry a gun?" and "Are you carrying a gun?"... If they don't need to know they won't.. If they ask "do you", they are probably wanting to know the "why". So I'll explain why, only after feeling their intentions out, sort of looking for the in your face troll..

My attorney ID card has "FIREARM" in big bold red letters. I have to use it to get into state and local courthouses if I want to avoid the security checks. The state puts it on all id's for attorneys with concealed pistol permits so that the courthouse guards will ask "do you have your firearm with you counselor?" as a reminder that you can't carry in the courthouse.

I will never give a straight answer, unless required by law.

The only exception I take to Taz's response is that (IMO) if you give an evasive answer you might just as well say "Yes."

There are certain situation in which I reserve the right to lie "Are you carrying a gun?" (unless it is a cop or other person who has a legitimate reason to know) is one of them.

As I stated earlier if you have no right to know, I'll look you right in the eye and say "No." and go about my business.

"Are you carrying a gun?"
..."Why do you ask?"
"That bulge in your shirt."
..."No, you carrying a beach ball?"

I remember one night when a cute girl at a party asked me if I was carrying a banana in my pocket....
I answered her with; "No, I'm just happy to see you!" =-)

I agree. Anything but a convincing "No" is "Yes."

Now, if I'm not carrying, it can be fun to get creative! :-)

I think I’ve told this story before here but let me explain why I’m so dead set on not telling people that don’t need to know.

Several years back, I made the mistake of telling a friend of mine who was interested in concealed carry that I carried a gun. I explained the ins and outs and what all I had to do to get a permit and I thought that was the end of it.

About a week later I’m talking to this guy and another friend who I did not want to know I had a permit after church. In the middle of the conversation my buddy turns around and tells the other guy “Treo’s carrying a gun right now.”

I made the mistake again and this time the guy I trusted has told everyone on the church security team, the ushers, the Pastor (who already knew) and various friends of his because he thinks it’s “cool”.

Once you tell one person you might just as well assume everyone in your circle and everyone in their circle knows.

That's why I don't make smart assed remarks or try to be "cool". If my wife asks (why would she?) she gets the straight truth, if a cop asks same thing. Other than that I would be straight with the Pastor or the head of the security team because they would know I was lying if I said anything else and that would be a red flag.

Any one else, even if they walked up and said "Hey Jamie told me you were packing is that true?"

"Nope." or "I don't knw why he continues to tell people that lie." and on about my day

thanks for the responses. I guess even though I haven't been asked yet, I am still new enough to concealed carry that I keep thinking someone will ask.

Have been carrying for 11 years and have never been asked, but if asked i would respond with "why do you want to know?"

about 30 years ago i was on a city bus and someone tapped my side whilst asking me if i had a gun on me... i thought it was rather odd at the time but looking back it may have been another conceal carrier who thought i might be carrying as well......i didn't have a gun on me then but if someone were to ask now whilst i was carrying it would depend on who it was as to how i would answer

Do you enjoy F#@^%& your wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend?I figured while we're asking rude questions that aren't anyone elses business, Id get that one out of the way"

I have only been asked one time by a person who knew of me through a friend and though he had some power he did not. He asked are you carrying a firearm I replied why would you ask that?
