LEO encounter in the Mall yesterday afternoon.

Went with the wife and kiddo into a mall that I have never been into before.
(Downtown Dallas area.)
Entered through a department store entrance. No 30.06 sign/s visible anywhere.
Encountered 'numerous' LEO's working the mall (8 in total). No idea why they where so many cops in the mall pulling what appeared to be security duty.
My wife wanted to find the 'Louis Vuitton' store, No, we can't afford to buy a $1500.00 - $5000.00 purse, but it was for shits n giggles I guess. LOL
A nearby LEO approached us and asked what store we where looking for.
I felt confident, not nervous at all, as I spoke with the LEO with my Glock 27 concealed IWB at my 4 O'Clock side.
He smiled and even chuckled with me a bit as he pointed us in the direction of the store. Overall good experience.
I wonder how he would have reacted if he knew I was carrying.

Any contact with Law Enforcement, you are required to notify them that you are a permit holder, and that you are carrying or not..... At least that is how it is in Ohio....... If he would of been a jerk and decided to randomly "id" you, here in Ohio it would of alerted him that you have a CCW and it probably would of not ended in a positive manner, if he was not aware ahead of time.

Fortunately we don't have to inform in colorado, and they just changed the law where if they run your DL it will not pop up on there databases. That can't just id you with out some sort of reason either

Trust me if they wanted to find a reason they could its not hard...... Simple " suspicious person casing the mall" works every time !!!

I think the law in Texas specifies "Any official contact" if a Police officer approaches you I would think that qualifies.

That said, the law carries no penalty for failure to inform.

there never was any such law. certain county sherriffs added permit holders names to the CBI database so that if their name was run it came back as a hit w/ a CHP notification. There were only like 5 counties that did it.

(2) When a peace officer has stopped a person for questioning pursuant to this section and reasonably suspects that his personal safety requires it, he may conduct a pat-down search of that person for weapons.

I assumed being 'required to inform' meant whenever you had to show the officer your i.d. (as in a traffic stop), not when asking an officer for simple directions.
I'll have to look into that some more.

Your right it was a voluntary program where the sheriff put ccw names in the database. But now they are required to take those names out

The correct way to handle this situation according to the anti-cops is this:

Officer: Can I help you find any store in particular?
You: Am I being detained or am I free to go?
Officer: Huh?
You: I want my lawyer before any questioning and I do not consent to any searches.
Officer: Alright then... Have a nice day pal...
You: I want your badge number and your supervisor!
....

He was within earshot of both my wife and I and he overheard both of us near the directory looking for the store's location. He then approached us and asked us what store we where looking for.

Not sure about Dallas...but if this happened in Washington and I was open carrying I would expect the same exact courtesy. Would you expect an officer to treat you any differently if he knew?
