Look at the Famous FBI shoot out that happened in Florida. The bad guy was shot with a 38 special, and was still able to return fire. Granted he died of his wounds, but not before killing a agent. So depending on who is coming at you, and what they are armed with, you might want something stronger than a 32 acp. A 380 acp would be a minimum power cartridge to use. Can a 32 acp kill ? Yes, but how fast ? Would the bad guy have time to return fire after being hit by a 32 acp ? Could be. If he was hit by a 40 cal, or a 45 acp, would he be able to return fire ? Probably not ! There's been a lot of people who were shot by small caliber rounds, and survived. People shot by large caliber rounds, not so much. Granted shot placement does matter too, but the rule of thumb is to shoot the most powerful caliber that you can shoot accurately. That's it.Dependability is what counts. Carry a gun that you shoot well and is dependable. Some people say they want a gun that puts the bad guy down with one shot. Nothing wrong with that, but I want one I can control well and put a double tap in center mass. Not too many times a person keeps coming at you with two rounds in him. If they do shoot again. That is why I carry either my Bersa Thunder .380 or else my Thunder .32 acp.
Bad guy's are not gonna laugh and say that's not a big caliber gun so it doesn't hurt me. People have some kind of misconception that bad guys can be shot and laugh it off. Sure sometimes they get shot and keep on coming, even in wars some people take hits and don't go down. But you look at shooting tapes online and you will see that there are not too many bad guys who get shot and keep coming. They like most people get real worried when they are shot and try to run or fall to the ground. Carry whatever you shoot well and shoot till the threat is stopped.
