Terrorism and need for concealed carry

the only terrorism i see going on here is that being conducted by state legislatures (e.g. The california, new york, nj legislatures) and congress, and probably our president as well.

I got one of these 'Homeland Security: fighting terorism since 1492' tshirts somewhere - just thought I'd help spread the word:
The gov't gets to define terrorism, when someone does it to us it's terrorism, when we do it to them it's heroism.

It's an actual possibility. IS has called for their followers to go and attack random people, behead them.

Their approach is so low tech it's impossible to prevent.

Exciting time to be alive for sure. :yes4:

We Wonder How Many More Are Carrying

I've been a LEO, and now a CCW holder. Normally don't carry but with the beheading attacks going on around the world and our southern border control problems. Plus our governments recent announcements of potential lone wolf attacks. Today I am back to carrying everyday. I would hate to be out and about and have some terrorist try and attack me or mine. What say you?

This is so interesting that you are feeling this way. It was something we were discussing in the office and we are going to publish an article on our Gun Control News Site, would you mind if we quoted you as a member of the public who harbors these concerns?

The OP named the beheading videos, the Southern border (or lack thereof) and new lone wolf attackers and I can understand him leaving out being hurt by the police or an alphabet agency since he was a LEO. For me there's allll of those things, plus common thugs, the fact that I have a wide and kids, movie theater shootings, and the old saying that one gun in your hand is better than the whole police force on the phone. I would suggest that if it has been a while since you carried, or if you retired from your LEO job and are getting a bit older, now more than ever you need to make regular trips to the range. Hell even if you're not, you still should go practice just due to the fact that you are carrying and will also have it near your nightstand or something like that at home. Best wishes!

No problem you can quote me.

We are 10x more likely to be hurt by our police or an alphabet agency, than we are of a terrorists organization from another country...
NO! We WERE in the past more likely to be hurt by our federal government (solely because ISIS/L had not yet grown into the monster it is today)... but that is not true today. Although the US government has (unconstitutionally) begun to treat its citizens badly, the threat - right now - from ISIS/L is far more real and far more physically dangerous. Even Homeland Security readily admits that the Muslim extremist threat (ISIS/L's announced intentions to attack the US on American soil) is not only real, it is credibly and imminently possible for them to achieve. Australia has, luckily, just foiled an ISIS/L attempt to randomly attack their citizens, and in the process discovered that a similar plot is aimed at the US. Real-time war in America is a distinct possibility... not just an idle-pastime idea of rural religious incompetents.

ISIS/L is independently very well-funded (as a result of stolen oil revenues, bank robberies, and ransoms), with more than $2 billion in cash. It has developed modern, corporation-style management teams, and has become very adept at using social media to recruit new members. It now has well-over 30,000 active fighters, not counting support personnel. This is hardly a "fringe element" of Islam, as most of the mainstream media calls it.

No you're wrong, the information has all ready been posted a few more posts after mine supporting my claim. Where's your support?

Well today a Islamist just killed two women and beheaded one in Moore Okla. but lucky for the other employees the Plant Mgr. Was a Reserve LEO and was armed and he shot and stopped the Terrorist.

exactly - and here's some data to back up / prove what you just said....

I think the figure is actually "nine times" more likely, but you were on the mark there.

If you take just a cursory peek at the link in freethink's post JoeUSooner, you'll find that you're completely out of gas on the argument that Chen or freethink are wrong about the threat to Americans from cops vs. from terrorism.

That's not to say that ISIS isn't a force of evil and barbarity, just that when you use all-caps and exclamation points to say someone is wrong who isn't wrong at all, you should at least know what you're talking about. It's not an either/or equation. It can both be true that ISIS may launch attacks here in the United States one day soon, and cops are 9 or 10 times more of a threat to American citizens than terrorism has historically been. There's no reason to get all excited about Chen's statement about cops when wanting to make your own statement about ISIS. The statistics stay the same regardless of your perception that ISIS is growing into more of a threat than it has been.

Me, I'd have no problem with counting cop killings right alongside terrorist killings. I view them as the same, just one group bases their violence on a false religion, and the other on an over-inflated sense of power, authority and self-importance. When innocents die at either of their hands on a regular basis though, the "why" matters not, only the end result, which is the same; Innocents are dead.

How does a thread on Terrorists get twisted into rants by some members that hate LEO's? Why not post on distracted drivers that kill innocents? Some of the members on this site seem a few bricks short of a full load. JMHO

OK, count deaths of innocents by distracted drivers right alongside cops and terrorists if it makes you feel any better.

The point was made early in the thread that death by cops happens 10 times more (subsequently corrected to nine times more) to Americans than death by terrorism. Someone called BS on that assertion and I answered that it wasn't BS. How is that a rant? And why should nine times as many deaths of Americans by cops be ignored in favor of fear-mongering over a threat that hasn't been successful enough to even nudge the statistical data within America's borders since 9/11/01? Killers are killers. Threats to society are threats to society. We can talk about any group that is consistent with those memes that we want to. Don't like it?

I feel this thread was on why you started carrying daily again, not on terrorism. As an ex Leo I find it very unusual that you weren't carrying all ready...but to link it to terrorism? Maybe for you since you are on one side of the blue line and terrorism may be more of a threat to you...on the other hand the rest of us have to deal with both groups...and looking at both...it's pretty easy for me to tell who is more of a threat...beheading or shot, doesn't matter dead is dead...but alas it's all moot because I've been carrying everyday anyways...not because I'm afraid of anyone, but because I love my wife and son.

I could post about distracted drivers...they do kill a lot of people...and according to recent events all it takes is to drive a car to be deemed a threat enabling lethal force by the boys in blue...again though that kills us more than it kills you guys.

Have to agree on this. I've had a gun in my home for 10 years or so, but just got my license to carry 6 months ago. And it wasn't because of terrorists but just the shootings by thugs and robbers shooting people locally. We can see that on the news almost every night. Terrorists have been beheading people for a long time and it's terrible but as far as numbers go you're probably 99.9% more likely to meet a gangster on the street who doesn't like how you look at him or is willing to kill you for your wallet than a terrorist. Maybe being a former LEO made you a little more comfortable with local gangsters and terrorists are a little more of an 'unknown'.

Just to clarify...this was quoting me but responding to pitbull right?

When someone is killed by a distracted driver the death is ruled as accidental. A distracted driver is not intentionally targeting defenseless civilians. The same cannot be said for terrorists or LEO. I know that many LEO are great citizens and should be a model for others to follow. The problem is that LEO circle the wagons when one of theirs is involved in a bad bad shoot. There are plenty of examples of this today. The Walmart tape is out now so the cops shot a young kid trying to do drill team movements with a toy gun. It has been determined that the cops were within their authority to shoot to kill. If you are LEO will you extend that same courtesy to others that may mistakenly shoot at a perceived threat. If you won't then maybe you and other LEO have a special calling to kill folks whether they deserve it or not. In the 60's LEO were called pigs because of some of their strong armed tactics...but LEO from the sixties were not killing people ad in finitum.

Just as an aside (not hating on LEOs or ex LEOs or presidents I don't like or anything here),

From that article I cited earlier (Washington's blog) which is one of many which cites statistics relating to causes of untimely passage here in the USA, it included a summary in part that said:

"Scientific American notes:

(One) might have toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by the microscopic parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which the CDC estimates has infected about 22.5 percent of Americans older than 12 years old

(T. gondii) is a brain-parasite."

Now I will not assert that anyone here has a brain parasite, but I will say that the quote in the article caught my eye. Some years back I did help do a study, and then I summarized some studies, which revealed, in part, that various feline creatures, including some that people often keep in our homes, do actually contribute to increasing levels of Toxoplasma gondii in our watersheds (which include our ponds and rivers) and that these persistent Toxoplasma gondii wash out to sea (at least, in what is known in some circles as "The Monterey Bay," if not in all places) and infect the brains of the Southern Sea Otter, causing it to have seizures and become increasingly susceptible to predation from local sharks. (You might also conclude, rightly, that said infected otters were less able to care for their young when in such a condition.)

These studies made their way to local planning departments which hastened to reduce certain types of household waste to the protected Bay and which also made efforts to minimize the impermeable surfaces in the Pescadero Watershed leading to the Monterey Bay, so that at least the crappy water could sink into the ground and get filtered a bit (before it made it to the ocean and started causing deaths that horrified tourists and federal oceanagraphic officials...).

The reason I mention this in this thread is because:

1) It was mentioned in Washington's Blog which was part of an earlier comment in this thread, and

2), more to the point, some years after those studies were done about Toxoplasmaa gondii and the local Bay planning actions taken, MORE studies were released which indicated that HUMANS could also have their brains addled by Toxoplasmaa gondii -- and that the presence of domesticated cats made it more likely that serious brain problems or even death could result in persons who lived in the same home as cats who would be infected with Toxoplasma gondii....

Finally, the conclusion...

(again, this made it all the way to Scientific American, which is no small feat!)

""Scientific American notes:

(One) might have toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by the microscopic parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which the CDC estimates has infected about 22.5 percent of Americans older than 12 years old

(T. gondii) is a brain-parasite."

3) That means that IF WE ARE ONLY LOOKING AT A BRAIN PARASITE CARRIED AROUND BY DOMESTIC CATS (and thus humans in close proximity to such cats) - even in that limited look at what can kill you - it's ALREADY MORE than what "terrorism" has ever been and could ever be.

Please don't hurt your cat though, and if you see an LEO on the street, smile, and be happy.

Arm thyself, take good care of thyself and thy cat, and read up on cryptoanarchy (don't knock it 'til you try it).

Avoid fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Somebody said that in a book. :-)
