HomeDepot anti-gun policy

I didn't have it in my car or in the store! And rumors around the store are that I got walked out over a gun! A gun which wasn't even there!!
So what is the issue? How did you get into a gun scrape with an employer?

I have open carried into the HD here locally, didn't have any problems. My place of employment is posted for the building but they don't care about the parking lot. My daughter has a ccw but can't carry to her work because of the terms of employment, that includes the parking lot. Customers can carry into the store. If you didn't even have a weapon with you , I don't see probable cause.

UPDATE
This person got his job back. Apparently someone higher on the corporate later thought a law suit against HD over the matter would not be a good decision. The company refused to give him copies of all the papers on the issue but the no firearms signs are gone too, so this ended up well. He was still told not to bring his gun and leave it in the car or to park in the Dicks parking next door.
I've always open carried in hoime depot and have never been questioned about it. It must be something local.

I work at a HomeDepot in New Mexico, an open carry state. This last Saturday I heard that an employee was being terminated for keeping a firearm in his vehicle while at work. Now we have been "advised" that not only are we not allowed to keep firearms in our vehicles while on the clock but no associate can carry open or conceal carry in the store, even if they have a permit, on their day off if they come shop at HomeDepot. Also, associates can not leave a firearm in the vehicle while shopping at HomeDepot on their day off, to do so will result in termination.

Screw them. There is a new Lowes going in 1½ miles from my house. Bye-Bye Home Depot.

How did the management discover the employee had a gun in his car? In Texas we have a law that prohibits businesses from banning firearms inside locked vehicles on public parking lots.

The following email was received from Home Depot by an inquirer:

Good afternoon: Thank you for your note. Our policy is that we do not prohibit anyone who is legally permitted to carry firearms from entering our stores, provided the firearms are carried in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

I’m sorry some of the store associates your colleagues spoke with were not familiar with our position.

As to employees, I work for a national outfitter, and we are also not allowed to carry while on the job. When we come in to shop, however, we can carry like everyone else. Storing a firearm in a vehicle while we work is also not prohibited.

As a shopper in TEXAS of both HD & Lowes. They don't have any anti gun (30.06) signs here for us (Not sure what their employee policy is?)

I thought Home Depot was OK with CC, and Menards was against CC in their stores?

.

Once again, the Internet is leaving everyone dazed and confused.

.

Keep your mouth shut, and if there are no gov approved signs banning the presence of guns on the front door of your store, you should be good. Follow all local, state and federal laws.

There are just too many companies that are service oriented that restrict their employees more than they do their customers. To them their employees aren't spending the bulk of the money they rely on for their profit on their PNL.

I too was in the same circumstances and abided by their wishes to maintain my job. In life you have to pick you battles carefully, we can't all have our dream job. Now that I am retired, I patronize the establishment that I used to manage and OC because I can and they won't say a word to me about it.

Food service industry establishments are an easy target for a BGs late at night when foot traffic is low and lower traffic reduces the chance of armed guests. Especially when most all of the national and regional chains for liability insurance reason restrict employees from carrying while employed. This has been going on since the very first person decided to go what become known as "postal at work", that being said.

Working today most anywhere puts you in an environment that will put you in danger, and will continue to grow with the liberals leading the way to out right confiscation sometime in our future.
~
My point being is that you have no real idea just how many places you already shop, attend, and patronize that have these very same policies, because they have just never been brought into the spotlight prior to this moment in time. If you really knew you wouldn't have anywhere to shop for just about everything you need.
~
Be thankful they still allow the customers to carry in compliance with state and federal laws. They could all very well become busters and then how loud would you all be howling. Just look at what the mayor of Seattle has done with his initiative to create all the GUN FREE ZONES within his city.

Albertsons and many, many other businesses have the same policies. Typically it is part of the employee contract.

I shop at HD a lot. Did not know they had this policy. That sucks. I live in PA, and I am going to check into it in our state. I may be shopping elsewhere in the future.

In many states they have clarified that firearms stored in personal vehicles are not on company property, and individuals have that right. The same way in Texas I can drop my grand kids off or pick up at school while being armed, as long as i don't try to enter the property armed i am legal.

The deal with a firearm locked in your car, is as far as I could tell is a state regulated thing some states allow it some don't, I'v also read that in states that do allow it there has been lawsuits from people to get there jobs back, and a number of those have been won, by the wrongfully terminated employee,

And as I have said before several times if you really have to go into a establishment with a gunbuster sign on the door and you don't want to poss start a test case, go in make your purchase, or have your meal, pay and leave and keep your gun concealed, and keep your trap shut concerning it, this especialy go's if the sign's do not have weight of law, and are fancy no trespassing signs, I'm not advocating doing something illegal, but sooner or later you may run out of places to go, and for the record yesterday I was in and out od Home Depot and Lowes a couple times each with my Colt commander on my belt, nobody said **** to me

The problem is all the mom and pop hardware stores are gone. There's nowhere left in many areas to get building supplies. I haven't seen any signs at any of the HD stores in my area. But we must understand that almost every company will have a "no weapons" policy in the employee handbook. If someone accepts the job then they agree to the terms.

I worked at home depot in SC. From my understanding with the rules here. Employees on the clock were not allowed to have fireaarms on site. Any customer was allowed as long as they have a permit. I'm not sure about the employee coming in on their day off, but of course you could always go with self-preservation is your business and not theirs.

I totally agree If you don't make a big deal then they won't pay you any attention. In North Florida, there are many gun free zones but walk like it is another day, confidently, not paranoid, and a large shirt or loose pant no one will notice, be careful of you hand motions and don't stare. all they can do is tell you to leave and I have been asked to leave because my shirt came up and exposed my para 1911 45 as they made sure that I left I left with 3 family members for my CWP.LOL
