HomeDepot anti-gun policy

I work at a HomeDepot in New Mexico, an open carry state. This last Saturday I heard that an employee was being terminated for keeping a firearm in his vehicle while at work. Now we have been "advised" that not only are we not allowed to keep firearms in our vehicles while on the clock but no associate can carry open or conceal carry in the store, even if they have a permit, on their day off if they come shop at HomeDepot. Also, associates can not leave a firearm in the vehicle while shopping at HomeDepot on their day off, to do so will result in termination.

I quit shopping at Home Despot a long time ago. I'll drive a zillion miles before I shop there for anything. I don't like them pushing their perverted ideas onto our kids.

If it's true everyone walk off the job. Save some money first! Do they have a no guns allowed sign in front of the store? If they do then even though it's your day off you need to follow the rules. Now that I have calmed down, if you leave your "self preservation tool" in your car; no one at work should know that it is there... a security risk..... do not tell anyone. Do not make an issue of it. If you open carry on your days off then it is up to you if you want to risk your job. I think you would have an excellent case! I am not kidding, maybe the ACLU would like to take it. Go for it.
I am not an attorney but I can play one on the internet! The legal advice here is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I'm not sure about other states but in Washington if it is private property they can do whatever they want about allowing firearms. I just take my business other places.

**** it,,,,i dont work there,,,i carry there and shop there because its convenient,,,Florida has a whole different set of laws,,,i cant carry in my workplace but can keep in my vehicle...

Yep, HD and Lowes would be in violation of Florida law if they tried to fire someone for having the gun in their vehicle. FS 790.251 Protection of the right to keep and bear arms in motor vehicles for self-defense and other lawful purposes; prohibited acts; duty of public and private employers; immunity from liability; enforcement.—

Guess i will be shopping elsewhere, and all i have to say is my life and my family is worth more than any job if i was in your shoes.

Home Depot in my town is about 5 blocks from Lowes which is about one block from Menards. I don't work at any of them but none are posted against concealed carry and I carry in all 3 routinely. If one posts I will shop at the other two. I don't give money to businesses who favor criminals by allowing only those who ignore "no guns" signs to carry one.

I think Lowe's will get all of my business now! Dear Home Depot Management, Lowe's sends it's dearest thank you for your stance against guns! Since we do allow Conceal Carry there should be many thieves and criminals coming to your stores. We hope you enjoy your increase in loss profit, increase in stolen merchandise not to mention the robberies that you will now incur due to the knowledge no one in your stores will be armed! Again from us at lowes and Conceal Carriers everywhere thank you!

Refer to the Disney result when they tried to prohibit locking one's personal defense choice in one's vehicle....they lost. Again, I am not a lawyer and this advice is worth what ou paid for it, just sayin'.

They're the employer. Their rules. You have a choice. Follow them or not, but be prepared to pay the consequences.

Why can a person's place of employment dictate what an employee can or cannot keep in THEIR vehicle?

I haven't given Home Depot a single penny since they fired an employee for reading the bible on his lunch break. They used some lame excuse about an unauthorized button on his little apron but he'd had it for a long time. You know it's bad when an atheist like myself will boycott a place for denying someone the right to read their bible, but the right to believe what you want is a right and if you want to read on your lunch break then read.

I take it you've never worked for a Target distribution center (or a Target in general). Talking about violating rights, each day going in and coming out your lunch (or purse) got searched to prevent you from carrying in objects that were banned or carrying out goods (and you went through a metal detector). You weren't allowed to bring metal utensils in, you had to use the plastic ones they provided you, and then they made sure you threw them out when you were done. You couldn't bring pocket knives, nail clippers, etc into it either. It was worse than TSA.

Which brings me to my next point - they also told you you were not allowed to have these items on the premises. They sent the "security" (contractors from some security company..forget the name) to walk through the parking lot each day to look into everyone's vehicles to see if they could see everything. I recall one of the holiday temp guys I was hired with had a pocket knife in his center console. He was escorted out of the building in the middle of his shift by the security guys, where the NYSP were waiting outside to tell him to leave the property. I'm not sure if they had actually went inside the car (not sure how they could, I didn't stay there long enough to find out), but that combined with everything else they went through made me last a whole 2 weeks at that job.

Back on topic, I try not to shop at Home Depot anyway, although it's the only real hardware store we have here. I've never had a problem OC'ing in the store. From the 6 months I spent working as a vendor for Home Depot, I saw how badly the employees were treated, and that alone makes me not want to shop there. Them and Target make working at Wal-Mart (at least from what I've heard..never had to work there) look like a high-class job.
