Once the pluperfect is taken into account, the perceived contradiction completely disappears

Paul Taylor
Answers in Genesis

No it does not.

and the people who wrote the book know why there are contradictions - and they don't care because they don't take the bible literally.

silly christians keep trying to make the Ot into something the people who wrote the book never meant it to be, and to do that the xtians need to make nonsensical claims.

Gen 1 and 2 contradict each other. all the apologists in the world and their nonsense can't change it.

People don't reject the Bible because the Bible contradicts itself, people reject the Bible because the Bible contradicts them.

That's the best response you can muster to the fact that the bible contradicts itself? a nonsensical comical regurgitated phrase? No wonder the internet con artist focus on the most ardent believers....they are the most gullible of the population.

Bible Contradictions: Does the Bible Contradict Itself?
Well, if you’re like most people, I’m sure you’ve heard someone say “The Bible is full of contradictions.” Well, is this true? Does the Bible contradict itself?

Does the Bible Contradict Itself- A definition

Speaking of contradictions, let me begin by saying that two statements are said to contradict if the truth of one of the statements negates the truth of the other. Take for example the statements, “I have read the Bible,” and “I have never read the Bible.” Obviously, if one statement is true the other statement would have to be false. Let’s apply this to the Bible. Only after you can demonstrate that the truth of one passage, rules out the truth of another passage, can you justify the claim that the Bible contradicts itself.

Does the Bible Contradict Itself- A Closer Look

You see, many passages which seem to be in conflict are easily resolved by simply reading the text more carefully. In addition, an understanding of Greek or Hebrew, as well as a knowledge of geography and customs would be extremely helpful. Take for example the account of Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. In Acts 9:7 we read that during Paul’s encounter with Christ the men who were with him heard a voice. In Acts 22:9 we read that these men heard no voice. Well, what appears to be a hopeless contradiction is easily resolved by looking at the original Greek. Here we see a distinction between “hearing a sound as a noise” and “hearing a voice as a thought-conveying message.” Gleason Archer, an accomplished biblical scholar points out, that while Paul’s companions heard the Voice as a sound, Paul alone heard what was being said. (Kind of like the crowd who heard the sound of the Father talking to the Son in John 12:28, and thought they heard thunder.)
The point is that rather than taking a fearful attitude when faced with an alleged biblical contradiction, we should view these occasions as opportunities to search and explore the Scriptures. One thing I can guarantee is this: It will only serve to deepen your awe of the majesty of Scripture.

Does the Bible Contradict Itself- Conclusion

In fact, the more I personally read the Bible, the more I marvel at this awesome Book. How is it possible for forty different authors to write over a span of 1,600 years, on three continents, in three languages, on hundreds of subjects — yet, without contradiction — and with one central storyline, God’s redemption of mankind. Truly, it can be said without contradiction that the Bible must be divine, rather than human in origin. On alleged biblical contradictions, that’s the CRI Perspective. I’m Hank Hanegraaff.

More apologetics BS. "There aren't any contradictions, you just ain't reading it write. See where it says A before B in one verse, then it says B was before A in the other. You just reading it wrong. You have to read A before B in both verses to be reading it tight. Otherwise it uh..it....uh...would contradict itself, and we can't have that..."

Your sky daddy must be pleased to have all the editors and footnoters on earth correcting it's inability to communicate in simple, plain, clear and concise words.

Too funny.

nogods: I wouldn't want you confused by what you deem a contradiction so I will leave you with this little verse. One would have to be especially dense to not understand this: II Cor. 4:4, "But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them."

Another passage from the Old Testament is most appropriate today, given the world situation. Isaiah 55:6,7: "Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near, Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon."

nogods, whether you believe in God or not is your decision. You say the Bible is contradictory yet, for every contradiction you raise, there is also an answer. Whether you believe or not, your soul will continue to live somewhere after your death. Scientists say that it is an energy that does not die so, where does it go? Heaven? Hell? New York City? I choose to believe the Bible and what the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ accomplished for us if we will simply believe in Him. XD loves to quote Pascal's Wager and I guess, in its simplicity, it is right. After all, Pascal said the best wager would be that God does exist. Smart man!

There are what are called 11th Hour Believers, that think they can live their life like they want and then when things get really bad in the end they can just say 'Oh, now I believe, save me Lord. But the Lord may no longer be listening, and then you are really screwed.

Actually, it works the opposite - people claim they believe in Jesus and that everlasting happiness and bliss awaits them - after a relative dies they even proclaim "he's in a BETTER place" - but the first thing they do when faced with the possibility that they may be going to see their boggieman, they pray to stay "oh Jesus...Please don't take me now..."

They even buy firearms and ammo to help keep themselves here.

If they really believed, they would teach their children this prayer:

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the lord my soul to take
If I should wake another day
I pray the lord hurry up and take me away.

But instead they are like a travel agent who tries to sell a trip to a far off place...a place they have never been to, and will do everything possible to avoid going to...

I have always found it funny how the unbelievers use verses from the Bible to try and prove we, Believers, are wrong. But dismiss the verses we quote to prove there is a God!

Uh...maybe you don't understand simple logic and reasoning.

A written work that is contradictory proves itself in error because of the contradictions.

But you can use a self-proclamation to prove the proclamation. So saying that a book that claims there is a god is proof of a god is pure nonsense.

Your First 6 Days In

HELL

Most vacations include an itinerary. You have an idea what you will see and do before you arrive at your destination. The Bible has enough information to project an itinerary for those whose destination is hell. Let’s look at the first 6 days.

DAY 1

The trip originates at the gate of death. Since departures are made daily, you are called upon to begin your trip on short notice. Since the journey is only one way, there is no need to concern yourself with return plans.

Your initial point of departure may prove more than a little frightening, as you suddenly realize the finality of your destination. The trip itself will leave you with little time to contemplate what awaits.

As you pass through the doorway of death, you will notice almost immediately that your direction is taking you away from the light toward what appears to be complete and utter darkness. With each passing moment the darkness becomes more intense. At first the absence of light is only annoying, but you feel it becoming more ominous and threatening.

The intensity of the darkness is only matched by the absence of any joyful sounds-no music, no laughter, no sounds of merriment. As you move farther, faint sounds of moaning and wailing become detectable. They seem to be coming through the darkness from every direction. You become aware of a faint light. it flickers like a flame, yet thick clouds of black smoke dance all around it, keeping the flame from casting off any real hope of light.

Suddenly you find yourself obsessed to know what day and hour it is. Already it feels like you’ve been here for an eternity … and it’s only Day 1.

DAY 2

The continuing darkness is stifling. It’s as if something is lurking in the veil of night that surrounds you. You yell, you threaten, you even plead, but to no avail. Whatever it is just stays there, producing fear like you’ve never known before.

As your eyes struggle to adjust to the dark, you become aware of a new sensation. The heat. It’s right at the edge of unbearable. Hot, searing, intolerable heat. Your body craves water. You’d give anything for a drink, and you try unsuccessfully to push that desire out of your mind.

The air is thick, choking, miserable … and it’s just Day 2.

DAY 3

At least you think it’s Day 3. It seems like it has already been forever. You’ve not been able to sleep.

You still can’t believe you’re here. Where are the friends you thought you would see? The knowledge that they would be here too had brought you some comfort in your lifetime. Where is the fun you thought you would have? It isn’t at all like what you were led to believe.

You stumble upon a group of others. You pour out a litany of questions. As they open their mouths, no words come out … only the sounds of weeping and wailing. Some in the group don’t even try to respond. They gnash their teeth, as if in some invisible pain.

You wonder when this nightmare will end. You wonder why somebody can’t make it stop … and it’s only Day 3.

DAY 4

How you wish you could send a message to those you left behind. You’d warn them about this place. You’d tell them what it’s really like, so they’d never come. The thought of your loved ones coming to a place like this is unbearable. You can’t help but think back upon that day when you made your decision to come here. You understood that your rejection of Jesus meant that you would spend eternity in hell but it didn’t seem real or important then.

Looking back, you think how foolish you were to reject God’s offer of salvation. You wish you could choose again.

You find yourself hoping that your loved ones will choose differently, even though you realize such a choice means you’ll never see them again … never touch them … never speak to them. What a horrible realization … and it’s only Day 4.

DAY 5

You’ve become acutely aware of the absence of any good in this place. There’s no love, for God is love. There’s no joy or peace or goodness, because all of these come from God too. There’s nothing sacred, nothing holy, nothing of God anywhere to be found. You’re amazed at how evil evil can be.

For the first time since your arrival, you begin to sense the great gulf that is fixed between where you are and where God is. The span is beyond your comprehension as you try to realize the degree of distance that will separate you from God and those who chose to serve Him. God is on the other side of that gulf. Loved ones in Christ are on the other side of that gulf. What a lonely realization … and it’s only Day 5.

DAY 6

Through the darkness you saw a new face today. A new arrival. He stopped to speak with you. You could see the terror in his eyes. He asked questions that you had been asking only days before. You opened your mouth to reply, but all that would come out was the sound of weeping and wailing.

You’ve just spent your first 6 days in hell. Unfortunately, an unholy, unhappy eternity stretches out before you … and all because you rejected Jesus. if only…

But wait. The fact you’re reading this says you still have a chance. In His mercy, God is giving you an opportunity right now to change your eternal itinerary. “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21).

Oh, friend, do it now … before it’s too late.

(This scenario is based upon verses found in Revelation 20:14,15; Luke 16:20-31; Mark 9:43; Matthew 22:11-13.)

Uh...I think you fail to understand the rather simple logical fallacy of ?Pascal's Wager. His wager is for idiots. You have better odds at the roulette table.

Are there actually adults with IQ's above 90 who believe that nonsense?

Uh...I think you fail to understand the rather simple logical fallacy of ?Pascal's Wager. His wager is for idiots. You have better odds at the roulette table.

Nope. The odds are even. It is either/or, in case you missed the point. Don't forget, this is your soul you are gambling with but you apparently can't grasp the gravity of that situation. Your call, your soul. Or, do you not believe you have a soul? That is a serious gamble you are taking!

XD loves to quote Pascal's Wager and I guess, in its simplicity, it is right. After all, Pascal said the best wager would be that God does exist. Smart man!

There is a reason for that OG, for the moment you throw the Pascal's Wager card on the table, you have admitted you cannot prove your gods existence, but chose to use fear to coerce the gullible to believe in your nonsense.

So continue, for every time you try to use "you better believe or else" nonsense, it only validates the fact you have noting but baseless fear to validate the existence of your imaginary friend. The desperation it represents is really sad coming from an individual that has been around as long as you have.
