Why Do You Carry Concealed?

Looking at my wife and children the real question should be why wouldn't you? My household has been taught why we need to depend on ourselves and each other for protection. Nobody is more concerned for your safety than you are. We need every possible legal advantage at our disposal should something happen. We all know the criminal element don't fight fair or care, so we must be properly equipped to fight back. That is why we carry.

One reason is that in order to get a shot off when the attack begins very close, you need to already have your hand on your gun, and I can grab my gun without otherwise raising an alarm if I pocket carry.

"so I can look like every other potential target to the criminal and if they should happen to choose me to attack because I have given them no reason not to then I can whip out my big chunk of Element of Surprise and make them wish (hopefully) that they never messed with me, while doing nothing to initially prevent the trauma to myself and possibly my family from the attack itself and the potential shooting of the bad guy." Of course the trusty concealed carry only instructors leave that part out of training.
+1. Relying upon the "Element of Surprise" to protect you during a criminal attack is like relying upon your health insurance plan to protect you during a car wreck.

Concealed Carry is my choice. It is a tactical decision, based on my training and experience. Scenario: You are Open Carrying and enjoying a meal at a restaurant, when an active shooter enters and begins shooting people. Who do you think he will shoot first? In my opinion, he will shoot first anyone he considers may be a threat, and an open handgun on someone's hip marks them for an early bullet. With my pistol disguised, I can have the element of surprise on my side if I think i can stop him. Simple.
So you have experienced this in real life? Shooter rushes in the front door of a restaurant, gun in hand, ready to kill as many people that he can and the first thing he does is stop and looks at the customers to figure out who might be carrying gun? That is what you really want us to believe? I would love to hear your story of when you have experienced this in real life. You will be the first to provide an example. It's OK if that is why you choose to hide your gun, but people who might still be considering the choice should know that there has yet to be an example provided of Joe Citizen shot first in a public place during a robbery or mass shooting because they were openly carrying a handgun in a holster - unless they also happened to be wearing some type of security/police/military uniform as well.

So, it depends (disregarding complying with a law that makes a certain type of carry illegal) on what you want to base your decision of carry method on: theories that have never happened in real life - or "experience" of what really does happen in real life.

I got my CCW because as I got older, I realized how easily myself or my family could become a victim of a crime. Where I live, there are non stop home invasions, drive by's, people being jumped just walking down the street and much more. And, I'll be dammed if I will let anyone come into my home and hurt my family.
I think my turning point came about 4-5 years ago when I went to my usual tanning center. Well, not thinking anything of it, I parked in a spot right next to a large bush. It was light when I went in, however it was becoming dark. When I left the salon and walked to my car, as soon as I got in, a man jumped out from behind the bush. Fortunately, I have a habit of always looking around before getting into my vehicle, always have my keys in my hand so I can unlock it remotely as I get close, and then lock the doors immediately, even before I start my car.
This experience terrified me! Even though he couldn't open my car door, he tried to pull on my window, as I had a mustang convertible with a soft top, and would not stop until I started the car and backed out with him still trying to hang on.
I'm not in the best physical shape anymore, I have some medical conditions that limit my ability to protect myself, so I decided it was my right to protect myself and my family and after 44 years, I was going to exercise that right!

Conceal carry is the only option in my state but I believe open carry is a very real deterrent.
This story made me think...
The most famous flags flown by pirates to indicate they were such were all called the “Jolly Roger” and were adorned with a variety of artwork or often no art work at all. Most of these flags were simply black or red with nothing on them. Historical accounts indicate that, should a pirate ship raise a black flag, it indicated that so long as the ship they were attacking surrendered with no resistance, they would be given quarter. Should anyone aboard the ship resist or should the ship try to flee once the black flag was raised, the black flag would be lowered and the red flag would be raised. This flag indicated that no mercy would be shown to anyone aboard the ship that was about to be attacked.
Pirate ships were much more feared than other types of enemy vessels because, in resisting other enemy vessels, at any point you could surrender and be offered quarter by the traditional rules of engagement; so you could fight until losing was inevitable, then surrender. With pirate ships though, flying the black flag, you had to surrender immediately if you didn’t think you could win. As pirate ships rarely attacked unless they were in a good position to win, this pretty much meant that, if you encountered a pirate ship, you should probably just surrender right away.
As such, flying of any form of the Jolly Roger tended to instill the necessary fear in whatever ship was being attacked that they would surrender immediately. In one extreme example, in 1720, famed pirate Bartholomew Roberts sailed into a harbor at Trepassey, Newfoundland with a black flag flying. This resulted in the crews of all 22 vessels in port panicking and abandoning their ships. Combined, Roberts would have been no match for them, but the necessary fear was invoked from seeing the black flag that they all fled without a fight.

I conceal carry for self protection. I said those words for a long time and meant them but never really thought I would have to apply that protection. One day I was going to my car after doing some shopping and I was robbed at gun point. The bad guy had a helper and he loaded all the things in my cart into their car then the gun carrying guy demanded my wallet which I handed him with my left hand while placing my right hand ob my concealed gun. The guy told me to my face that since I had seen his face he was just going to have to shoot me. I moved quickly to my left while drawing my weapon and shot the guy with the gun twice in the chest and directed my aim to his partner who was drawing his guy so I also shot him twice in the chest. I kicked their guns out of reach and kept my gun pointed at them while I called for someone in the parking lot to call the police. I now say that I conceal carry for protection with conviction. I firmly believe I would have died if I hadn't been carrying that night so i now believe that everyone that legally can should conceal carry for their own protection and the adults (both mom and dad) should carry for the protection of their families. Yes conceal carrying will give you some of the protection you need to stay alive in scary situations.
Any legal issues after this happened? When and where if you don't mind saying.

It's good to hear that someone was able to use their right to carry, and right to protection, for a much better outcome.
I can only imagine how frightening it must have been for you! Thank God you had your gun with you!

Seems like a good thread for my first post here. I have a bunch of questions which I'll get to in the following days.
TN permit applied for, everything including fingerprints submitted. The waiting has begun.
I'll carry concealed so I don't upset the soccer moms. I asked a local sheriff about it, and he prefers citizens carry concealed instead of open.
But why carry at all? I lived in West Coast cities for 30 years, and made a conscious decision early on to not have a gun. Never needed one either.
For the last 30 weeks, I've been in a cabin on the side of a hill (locals call these mountains), no street lights, can't see the neighbors. A rabid raccoon prompted me to get a shotgun. A bit too much for a raccoon, but not for the local bears which might pick up rabies from said raccoons. Never needed a boat horn in the city either, but have one of those now too.
Different reason for the pistol, though. One night, my dog went on alert, ran down to the lower level barking. I followed, and saw nothing then.
A couple days later, I noticed the door on the lower level was ajar. The lock was damaged. Someone tried to enter while I was home!
I'll be carrying so I am armed when I enter my home after getting groceries. It's no good to me on the nightstand when I'm coming in the front door. It's no good to me on the nightstand when I'm going to see why my dog just barked.
Now you also know why I chose GoodDog as my user name. My real name is Rudy.

I carry concealed only to avoid scaring the tourists. Sure, the locals know OC is fine, but that blue-haired girl from California with all the hardware sticking out of her face will see an otherwise normal guy walking into a grocery store with a holstered gun on his hip and just *know* that he's a terrorist and call 911.
