Concealed carrier chosen as victim #1

Give it a try sometime. We all hope we are able to be as good as you think you are should the need arise, but the suspects had their weapons drawn and the Samaritan was concealed. He had to clear his holster, draw, aim and fire. He scored at least one hit and lived. May you do as well.

Most people wish they could be as good as me. *rolls eyes*

Lucky me though, the chances of me being in that situation are much less than concealed carriers. I presume you conceal? Good luck with that.

:) fair play on your comeback. Sorry Firefighterchen. I just felt like the guy did the right thing regardless of his carry choice and was getting raked for it. Nothing to do with your statement in particular.

I carry both ways, and for me in many cases I conceal because the sheep get nervous around firearms. It's all speculation, but this could have been a theft, rape, murder in the making. Maybe if the guy had been open carry the sheeples with the car trouble would've refused his help. It's all speculation.

I respect your right to open carry, and I'm hopeful your intent was to speculate that the situation may have been avoided, or mitigated if the Samaritan chose to open carry. I apologize if insult was taken from my flippant response. I totally missed an opportunity to make a useful comment.

Apology is not needed, but thank you. This whole thread is kind of tongue in cheek...my impatience getting the best of me. I'm not one to say this guy is right or wrong in a situation I was not in. It is unfortunate he was shot in the chest, but it is what it is. Could I have done better? I would hope so...but hope isn't always reality. My best chances, as I said earlier, are to avoid or deter that situation.

I'm not sure where you live, but the nervous sheep bit has never happened to me. I open carry all the time. Nor has anyone refused my help, even a little thing such as helping someone taking their grocery bags out to their car. I live in the northwest though...Could be different here.

You are the weapon, the gun is just a tool. It does not matter what's is in your hand or between your legs, only what's in your head or your heart

Charles, I wonder if those numbers are still pretty much the same today. 1986 was before most if not all concealed carry laws so I am sure criminals consider that someone could be armed more today by far even if they don't see a gun. I do believe that OC can certainly be a deterrent for some. Same as someone being confidant and aware of their surroundings will deter many criminals to approach an easier target.

The Wright/Rossi/De Gruyter study has been cited many times around here, and the notion that it's even more relevant now for the reasons you suggest (increased numbers of carriers) has been posited nearly every time it's come up. That premise seems to me to be validated to at least some degree by falling crime rates between the date of the study and now, which, to any rational thinking person, should call into question the prudence of adherence to a strict CC-only carry regimen.

I'm not calling into question anything you've said FAS1, just bouncing off your post to make the point that the thread was started in the OC forum by one of those imprudent CC-only adherents, so it's a question that needs to be highlighted.

PS: I had a CWP in WA State starting in 1978. If the availability was relatively new at that time, I wasn't aware of it. Here in Alabama, the permit system has been in place since 1919.. The legal carrying of weapons, either open or concealed, has remained since this country's founding at least a privilege, if not a protected right, in all but a handful of states. I always wonder why folks think that it's a relatively new circumstance that folks have the legal ability to carry firearms.
