Howdy from Mid-Missouri! We are one of the fortunate states that respects responsibly armed citizens....for the most part. Glad to have this forum available. I look forward to meeting some like minded folks here.

Hello, Newbie here. I want to vent about some of the things being posted on this website. A little background first: 40+ years CC, certified NRA and MA instructor, Vietnam vet (volunteered infantry), hold permits in MA, FL, NH, ME and PA. I just spent about an hour looking at the various licenses issued (I found 44), and except for three, most of them contained the words firearm/pistol/ revolver or handgun. The three exceptions actually had the word weapon or weapons. In the many years I've been instructing, I've always tired to teach my classes to use "firearm" instead of gun or weapon, because I don't want them to think of their firearm as an agressive instrument. Liberals love to call firearms "guns," as if all we 2nd Ammendment folks are just waiting to shoot everyone. In other words, my mindset is to think of criminals carrying guns, not firearms, which are what honest, law-abiding citizens carry. While I'm at it; I've never heard so many comments about shooting bad guys, then on this site. If someone came into my class with that attitude, I would refuse to sign-off on their LTC. My practice (learned through many years of experience) is to never, ever get into a situation where one would have to resort to a firearm, the utterly ultimate and non-revocable resolution. I stress a complete change of lifestyle. No more road rage. Be polite and cooperative at all cost. Don't put yourself in places or positions where trouble can occur (convenience stores at 3am, neighborhoods with crime, interjecting yourself in squabbles, etc.). I've followed the forums on CarryUSA for years, and it's astounding how many folks here seem to want to put themselves and others in jeopardy! Also, before you remark on a legal subject, research it! It's not fair to new CC folks to mislead them with opinions masquerading as facts. Opinions about firearms laws are okay (most of the laws are foolish), but they should be obeyed. If you don't like them, get them changed by electing those who agree with you. This from a guy in MA, who has only one candidate voted into office in the last twenty years due to our one party system. But I'll keep trying! Okay, I blew off enough steam, now come the "slings of outrageous fortune."

I have thought the same thing, reading some comments its almost like some people expect/want to use their firearm. I actually posted a comment on a blog or something saying ” Dont be so quick to jump to your firearm ”.

Welcome, Boston Boy, and well said. I'm glad you decided to join in the voices here. I'm newer, I'm learning and I hope I never have to use my firearm for anything but target practice, but it's nice to know there is more people like you and the folks on here that have level heads about things. I look forward to more of your posts.

Welcome! This is a great freedom that we have and with it comes great responsibility. Thank You Boston Boy for those words of wisdom.

Hello again,

I am encouraged by the several positive remarks brought forth by my tirade. I just did some quick math: 40+ years of visiting range twice a month, firing on average 100 rounds, gives me a total of 96,000 rounds! And that's not counting my Army experience, where for a time I operated an M-60. Now that I am retired, I have the time to tote up these completely useless facts. Speaking of retired; I've decided to instruct and qualify any local residents (Massachusetts North Shore, Topsfield/Boxford/Middleton/North Andover/Andover/Lawrence, etc.) for FREE. Only payment is range fee (at most $20) and ammo. So, if you, a relative or friend is looking to get an LTC (License to Carry), contact me at email below. Oh, by the way, this Martin/Zimmerman thing is getting out of hand with all the ad hominem and repugnant remarks all over the internet. Opinions are taken as facts, the media (where I worked) is running wild, and folks have decided that either Martin was a thug or Zimmerman was a vigilante. Let's please cool our jets, act and behave responsibly. We as CC, must be like Caesar's wife, above reproach! Okay, if you want to train for your LTC, drop me a line @ gerardi01@aol.com

I am a vietnam vet too. Served infantry with 82, 101, 1st, 5th,10th sf, 20th inf & 30th inf. Lots of experience but still learned some excellent lessons and i agree with your lecture on firearms, they are the weapon of last resort. A good run is better than a bad stand., if i avoid the situation today, maybe i can live in peace another day. Not that i am a coward. We have too many stand your ground fools when the situation could have been resolved peacefully. I still think background inv. Is good, lets add a psy eval also. Some of us don't want to be labered as a coward. I have been labered with a lot of names, but thank god i an still alive.

cigartom,
I can't go along with requiring a psych eval to obtain a permit (or license or whatever ya call it). In MA, some police chiefs (who sign off on License to Carry) have been requiring one so that they are indemnified, believe it or not! Applicant must pay the doctor's fee, along with training ($100+) and LTC fee of $100, plus club enrollemnt, which is another $150 to $300. Not only don't I personally believe in psychiatry and psychology, but I know that you can lie (ask prison inmates) to these doctors, and they have no way of proving your sincerity. Let's leave it to one's honor, integrity and character. As an instructor, I am the first line of defense, as it were. Nobody is gonna pull the wool over my eyes. I spend about an hour questioning potential applicants, posing the same series of questions over and over again, albeit in different ways. If you're evil or bizarre, and have questionable motives, then adios! I don't want potential putzes packing. I go over the application form and process with my students in detail. If they answer yes to any of the no-nos, that's the end of my involvement. I cannot in good faith agree to arming someone who has the wrong mindset. No money charged (I teach pro bono), just my time. And that is small enough value in stopping rogues.

So who evaluates YOU?

Now the folks of Boston not only have to fight the U.S. Govt for their already enumerated 2nd AMEND RIGHTS, THEY HAVE TO FIGHT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT, and now YOU!
Please stop doing that. You are putting yourself in a self-proclaimed lofty position of power to which you are not entitled. By doing so, you are part of the problem, not the solution. We have enough hoops to jump through without having to jump through another, put up by some self-crusading bureaucrat. The State gave you permission to train these applicants, not pick which ones YOU thought should get a permit or not. Who said YOU have the training to be able to pick and choose? What Govt approved training have YOU had, that is specific to the task, that enables you to do the picking?

Don't you see that by doing this self-selection process, YOU are part of the problem we are ALL having with this 2nd Amendment fight? Don't you see that YOU are adding ONE MORE hoop for us to jump through? And don't you see that, in doing so, YOU are WAY OUT of your purview? Nobody gave you that authority!

Listen, I know you are doing what you think is right and proper. And you might even be doing it to CYA, in case a wacko comes through your one of your classes. BUT, that ISN'T your job to do! We are ALREADY fighting enough "well intentioned" people in the process. We don't need another. You see, FOLKS like YOU are why we have this darn process now, instead of just being able to walk to the local firearms dealer, but a firearm and holster, and put it on and wear it everyday....all courtesy of the 2nd Amendment.

CI'm a new instructor coming on the scene and I strongly agree. Even we may let someone slip through the crack, but no one else is going to know the student better than us. My classes are going to be over 8 hrs. And I'm going to pour information into my students (never more than 10 at a time) leaving Bo stones unturned. Its only my time and I will be paying attention; I wana be able to sleep.

So who evaluates YOU?

GOV5,

I evaluate myself! My adult life has been spent evaluating people, mostly to protect myself. I am not concerned with an attitude of CYA, but the safety of the public and in the good furtherance of CC. There's more than enough evil people out there without arming them; as I hope folks would agree. If you believe I err in thinking, so be it. I'd rather you think me wrong (though at 65 years of age, my experience proves me correct), than cause needless grief. Remember, I don't charge folks, and they can always pay someone who has a more liberal attitude. Don't want to argue this topic.

Hello, I'm not new to the site but new to actually particapating. My wife and I have both had our CHL for two years and have been carring everyday since receiving it. We reside in east Texas and have a 9 year old son that enjoys going to the range with me everychance he gets. I have enjoyed reading the posts and have got a lot of usefull information from this site. I look forward to throwing my 2 cents in every once in awhileas well,

i agree with gov5. we have too many unstable people with weapons already. there must be some way of weaning out that bully, quick tempered individual who just want to shoots someone. we have enough gangs already and dont's need to add a gang with a cwp. he have the right to refuse to train anyone. common sense must apply with any use of deadly force. this is not the old western days, we should be more educated and think before we act. God help us, some of us just want to be known for carrying. we have too many confused goups already without adding one more fool to them.
