Why Do You Carry Concealed?

I personally carry because it gives me the knowledge that I am able to protect myself, family and what's mine. Sometimes the LEO's are not there when a crime is committed and people get hurt or dead. I don't intend to be one of those.

Also, people, know that the 911 dispatch is not the police and does not have any authority. They are not legal advice. If they did or did not tell Zimmerman not to follow is not legally binding. But keep in mind that the call is recorded and will be played in court.

I was not stating that you said anything, I was admitting that I had my statement wrong and what the dispatcher did tell GZ. Additionally I did read the entire dispatch 911 transcript. I chose to post the short section that has the point I was correcting myself on and the entire snip-it is in chronological order. It's not worth arguing with you over so this is my last statement on the subject. I was admitting my own error, you however didn't read it all and jumped to some conclusions.

I carry because I have been in the need-but-didn't-have category a couple of times. I carry because the lives of innocent people matters to me more than the lives of those who would prey upon them. I carry because just the other night, I passed three people on drugs, one drug dealer, and a cop who was attending to something else entirely in the three block span from where I got off of transit and my front door. I carry because I'm a conservative living in Portland, Oregon, a city which is so intolerant of conservatism that I've been assaulted three times merely for attending an event where people who escaped Soviet Communism told the stories of why they escaped.

And dammit, I carry because I have a fundamental, natural, and God-given right to look after my own safety. And I won't be surrendering that right any time soon.

So that I will never be a victim in a circumstance that I could have had control over. I also feel a strong societal duty, and am willing to risk myself if it means saving others (think theater shooting where i have the choice of running out the door or stopping the shooter, I would like to think that I would put others first and stop the shooter).

I presently don't conceal carry simply because I disagree with the big fees charged to get the license. Going thru a class is no biggie, but the charges imposed by a Sheriff is ridiculous!

I agree with the fees, but I want my sidearm still. Not too much in North Dakota ($25 (no course)) or Utah ($165 first time (with the course I took) total, $15 every five years (no course)). Minnesota was $75 and $50 every five years in the county I applied. Courses required but range in price. $50 to $250.

Nothing makes a right into a privilege faster than charging and regulating it. Good on you, I've been contemplating whether or not I will renew my 2a privilege, or just exercise my 2a right.

Self protection. Have never needed a weapon. Probably won't need one in the future. The operative word in the last statement is "probably." But what if........? I would rather have a weapon and not need it than need a weapon and not have it. Another reason for obtaining a concealed carry license is that I wanted to get it "while I still could."

I rather not be in jail

I can carry openly with no privilege card, or going to jail. A lot of states are that way. Some even allow to conceal without a privilege card, you know the states that actually believe in the 2a, aka constitutional carry states. I may be moving to one of this states soon, and I'll definitely not get the optional privilege card there.

I commend the other poster for standing up for what's right. You can be okay with charging people for their freedom, I mean heck people used to believe in slaves, we are all entitled to our opinions.

I originally took the class to be a responsible gun owner, and to learn a little about the legalities of protecting myself, but never bothered with obtaining a CCW permit. Since many of the public mass-shootings have started occuring I've seen the whole process through. I still don't carry every day, but I think I'm a little better prepared

Bottom line is - Just don't want to be a victim...

This I do know but the state I live in requires a permit to carry open or concealed. If it did not, then I would not have bothered.

I suffered a severe back and leg injury that has weakened me significantly. Short of a miracle, I will not be able to run away from a fight because I can only get the treadmill up to 3.1 miles per hour. As I acknowledged my shortcomings, I decided to apply for a concealed handgun license for WA and OR. I decided to carry to defend myself, protect my home, and protect my family.
