Why Do You Carry Concealed?

If you had the right to carry, you would not have had to pay the state $121 for their permission in order to do so. What you have is a membership card into a privileged, elite club who has the state's permission to carry a gun.

This is part of the problem we face as gun owners as a whole - some have come to believe the propaganda that the government and anti-gun groups are pushing down our throats - "A permit is just reasonable regulation." No.... the requirement to pay for a permit and obtain the state's permission to do something takes away the right and turns it into a privilege that only those with enough money and, in some states, favor with the issuing authority can engage in.

Absolutely correct. Imagine if you had to pay $121 and get a permit from the government to exercise your right to free speech. Or to engage in the religion of your choice. The 2nd Amendment is just like the First amendment. You shouldn't need some bureaucrat's OK to exercise it.

I have been carrying concealed for almost 30 years and have yet to find the need to pull my weapon. There have been a few times I have broken up fights, etc. but never pulled my weapon. Should the need arise though, to protect my family, help a law enforcement officer who is down, whatever the case may be, I know I have it available.

Mostly I carry a Kahr p380 in a FIST pocket holster but if I think I may need something heavier, then I carry a S&W M&P 40C.

I really just bought my gun for home defense. But as a new gun owner getting a permit to carry seems like the responsible thing to do. If nothing else I don't have to worry about the legalities of how I transport my firearm and ammo when I go to the range or take the family camping. But since I will have it, I will probably carry for extra protection when I do private security work over the summer. The only downside of that being that I will occasionally have to cross the border in to Nevada which will require that I stow my gun since I'm getting a Utah ccw.

Well, DCKilla, you're NOT supposed to carry concealed in church, that's breaking the law and I wouldn't admit it in a public forum, if I were you. There are certain places, you will recall from CCW training, where you CANNOT carry a concealed weapon. A church is one of them.

Hey, Mark, do you have a Concealed Carry badge? Of course, they're not official, but they're high-quality police-style badges that you can flash in a situation — you know, when the police arrive on the scene and you're holding a subject at gunpoint, you WANT to be able to flash something that looks official so you don't get shot. It's not impersonating an officer, as some critics try to characterize it. I carry an ID wallet with my CCW and a CCW Badge, but I don't flash it around. I've showed it to two police officers here in town, and they are totally cool with it.

Oh, and NO, I'm not selling the things or in the business.

Nevada has an open carry policy. You do not need a permit, but the firearm must be worn outside your clothing. If you are doing private security work that sometimes has you crossing into Nevada, it seems as if you have three choices: a) don't carry at all (or stow your firearm... you may carry loaded in your vehicle as long as it is not being concealed on your person); b) carry openly when going to NV; or c) apply for a CCW from a state NV honors since NV does not issue permits to those living out of state since 2001 (AK, AR, KS, LA, MI, MO, NE, NM, NC, OH, TN, and WV currently).

Good luck to you.

I carry because it is my right. I carry because I live in a high crime area and I don't want to take any chances. I have carried concealed now for 6 years and don't intend to quit any time soon. I think if every one that was qualified to carry did the crime rate would be way down.

How do you know what state DCKilla is from? Perfectly legal to carry in churches in my state, openly with or without a CPL and concealed with a CPL.

Hi all, first post here...I carry because I refuse to allow myself or those I love to be the victim of some useless scum. I know carrying a gun does not replace awareness and common sense, but goes hand in hand with them.

Well, perhaps I'm assuming too much in DCKilla's case because he has no profile, but I FIGURED (from his screen name) that he was from the District of Columbia, one of the most anti-gun communities in the United States.

What state ARE you in, Navy? Idaho? Montana?

I grew up with guns but lived in California much of my life. Now that I live in a state that supports carrying concealed, it is nice to have it available for any situation that might come up. There are too many instances in the news of people opening up on crowds or at different social events where no one was able to take down the madman until he shoots himself.

I am 65 and in a wheelchair. (Viet Nam injury), and I have been approached twice, i9n a gas station and a shopping mall parking lot. I carry because I must. Being with my wife does not bother bad guys.

I read a lot of what-ifs. I read a lot of "I would do this" ...

Seventeen years ago yesterday, a 14 year old gang banger changed my life. He fired 3 shots during an attempted robbery, and put 3 bullet holes in me, with his last shot at point blank range. Luckily, it was only a .25 caliber. The entire episode was over in less than 30 seconds.

Flight was my decision ... get description ... and lucked upon police within 2 blocks of being shot. Medical attention (ambulance service) was within another block.

I read a lot of conjecture here ... but, until TSHF it is just that - conjecture. Prepare, practice, use good SA, and ALWAYS CARRY when it is legal.

Fourteen year old was certified as an adult and spent 15 years in prison. I recovered and settled with workman's comp.

Today, I live and work in a safer area, but, like AMEX, I don't leave home without it (my concealed weapon).

Well, coulda been a lot worse. Most gang bangers would've drilled you with a 9mm or a 380 — common weapons of choice on the street.

What kind of damage did the 25 auto do to you, if I may ask? In the cases I've studied, the 25 is so underpowered for its size, it'll bounce right off a human skull, you really have to actually fire the weapon into somebody's ear or eye or jam it into the torso to make it lethal.

Although the original 25 (designed by John Browning, BTW) was intended as a "vest pocket" means of self defense back in the early 1900s, the later Beretta 25 Auto was designed as a weapon for fighter pilots, in case they got shot down or bailed out behind enemy lines, you know. They carried these little goody packs that contained gold jewelry, candy, hosiery, and a 25 auto — for dealing with the locals, right. You can still find those fighter pilot 25s in pawn shops to this day — look on the gun frame for the stamped image of a falcon in flight or diving.

I carry a nice Beretta 25 Auto on backpacking trips into the mountains — it has no great penetration, no knockdown, it's definitely not a man-stopper; but the 25 Auto is LOUD, and I use it to scare off bears... Like those bear-bangers, you know, just fire it into the ground and the bears high-tail it. Bears are smart, they know what firearms are. :) I call the 25 Auto the "Noisy Cricket," and it lives up to its name.

You're lucky the kid was dumb enough to use a 25, actually.
