Why carry open in town?

Seems to me that legally carrying open while walking in town is just a show-off and an invitation to be hassled by law enforcement and certain members of the public. What purpose does it actually serve? Comments?
If you are living in a state that permits open carry, why would you not carry open anywhere you wanted too legally. You have a natural right to protect yourself and a firearm provides you the means to do so.
~
Doing it openly provides the public with the knowledge that you can and will exercise those right willingly and without any government interference. How else is the unknowing public going to become aware of this right if examples of law abiding citizens don't lead the way. This type of advocacy has proven itself time and again.

I OC every day and enjoy the interaction it creates with law abiding citizens when it occurs (most of the time no pays me no mind, wonder what I'm doing wrong), I just can't see what all the fuss is about.

To answer the part of your post I put in bold ...

Open carry rubs some concealed carry people the wrong way because it goes against their elitist idea that they are somehow "special" to have been given a permit to carry a gun and it annoys them to discover that (in many States) no permit is required to open carry... which means anyone can carry a gun making the permit holders just a little bit less "special".

And the most oft heard disparaging remark against open carriers is:

"Just because you can doesn't mean you should."

Alluding to if you do it might upset someone... but what that statement above really means is:

"I know you can but I don't want you to because I don't like it."

And yep... it did upset someone.... the one who didn't like it.

You've been on this forum for 4 years, never posted once... and then with your first post, ask the question that has been debated probably the most on these forums. What purpose does that serve? Comments?

Maybe we should check on a tanker truck load of Troll Spray......

I understand your point and it is well taken.

I on the other hand don't care if someone is upset when they see me open carry, I just don't care and that is whyI don't see what all the fuss is about.

I have been a non-conformist most of my life (started in high school). I'm one of those people most people don't like because I just don't worry about what other people think about me, don't care if they like me and have never worried if someone was my friend, friendships are over rated (when you really need them you can only count on yourself), he!! even your family can turn against you at times.

So yeah, what's the fuss, don't look, don't be around me, as far as I'm concerned it falls into a TFB category (too phucking bad).

I apologize... I should have mentioned that I was bouncing off of the part of your post I had put in bold... not commenting on your most excellent post.

I also open carry where ever I go and I don't give a fart in a windstorm if someone doesn't like to see it. They can simply not look. Or they can get all upset and have it spoil their day while I go on about my life just happy as a clam. After all, there are times I don't like to see 40 pounds of metal hanging off someone's face yet I won't tell them they shouldn't do it... I'll just not look. Easy as can be.

My father inadvertently gave me some very good advice when he made mention about some people who didn't like him (I forget the reasons why now and I left out the expressive words he liked to use) when he said... "Screw them! I got along without them up to now and I'll get along without them from here on out."

Wise words to live by.

Just maybe if people see folks open carry then perhaps those people will understand that a person with a gun is not necessarily a threat. People in this country need to see 2A folks exercise their rights just as I have to listen to people air their infantile liberal crap once in a while...the right to free speech.

If I don't OC in town, where am I supposed to carry? @OP, where are you located? It might make it easier to understand your question/attitude. In four years of OCing I've never been hassled by LE. Matter of fact about 12 of us got together for lunch, and three local cops where in the place and could of cared less.

Why do the anti open carry trolls always come in this thread to pick a fight. I don't care if you open carry or carry concealed as long as you carry. You guys use the same arguments Bloomberg uses to attack people who carry only you use it against your own.

Have you ever heard of a gun store where everyone behind the counter is openly armed being robbed during business hours? Though there may well be a few scattered instances of such criminal idiocy, it is an exceedingly rare occurrence. Could it be that OC at a gun store is a deterrent to crime? I believe it is.

I concealed carried for well over 30 years before I started OC'ing. All you have to do is search on my post history to know that I want absolutely nothing to do with cops, so anyone who sees my OC'ed weapon as an invitation to come hassle me is either blind, can't read, or just stupid.

While I have no objection to talking to strangers about my OC'ed weapon as long as they're respectful, non-aggressive and/or non-insulting, the fact is I've been OC'ing regularly since last August and not a single person, cop, citizen or store manager, has said a word to me about it.

I suppose you're right in one respect. I do want attention for my OC'ed weapon....I want would-be criminals to notice that even though I'm a fairly old guy who walks with a pronounced limp and sometimes with a cane, I'm not a defenseless or willing victim. I hope he decides against trying to victimize me or mine, and I believe that OC has at least the potential to accomplish that, whereas CC has absolutely zero potential to accomplish that.

I OC for the tactical advantage and because I'm too old to allow myself to get behind the curve by having to get to my weapon after being surprised by an attacker.

Your OP sounds like you've already made up your mind about the motives of OC'ers, but you asked, so there you go.

Good luck with the giveaway contest.

Blues

From one old(er) fart to another, carry on Blues. You have made a lot of sense. I have the same problems as you and then some. Can't procrastinate at our ages.

I checked to see if I have posted on this. Read all the way thru. So, where I live in July it may zoom up to 110 degrees F. With my cutoffs a fanny pack would look really silly. The Ultra Carry might fit the bill for me. But I would have to be in a large city to do this and I do not go to large cities unless I must and I don't have to must. In my city Walmart, Safeway or the like I have seen folks with Ruger Black Hawks in he store. Not an issue. I do like to open carry with the full size 1911, Bianchi Holster cocked and locked. I may either receive one or two questions if any. Hey, mister, your gun is cocked. Or. Hey nice, what do you feed her? Again in my county it is not an issue. Now, in my little old S-10 pick up truck, I thing the Glock and 1911 window decals are a big tip off. My wife has noting on her SUV and will not let me put anything but the AAA sticker on the bumper.

Really tired of argument, because we can! Read shall not be infringed, carry how you like, or don't carry, think I woke up in America this morning.

I say bring on the police harassment! I can put their money to good use!
The kicker is that they were violated by the government who then paid a settlement which is now taxable under IRS rules. Ironic.

Here in NC I see people OC all the time with no problems. I like a response I heard somewhere were someone had called 911 because someone was OP the operator asked the caller if it was Holstered she said yes, although she dispatched LE she told the caller that this State was an OP and as long as it was holstered there shouldn't be a problem.
