As you can see, this was important enough for it to be the very first thing required, in the very first Amendment. Some (read as "most") atheists would love to see laws written "prohibiting the free exercise thereof" because it offends them.
 
Don't get me wrong; I have no problem with you being an atheist. I do have a problem with you (atheists in general, not you personally) forcing your non-belief on a society that largely disagrees with you.

and laws forcing gays to not be able to marry isnt a problem? it's purely based off "religious texts" that cannot be questioned. i agree in the "live, let live", but forcing that ideology to segregate a group from doing all others can is B.S.

"Person denying existence of Supreme Being not to hold office. No person who denies the existence of the Supreme Being shall hold any office under this Constitution."

no no one that is athiest, nor anyone that has a religion other than christian or jewish can hold a political office (judeo-christian supreme being)? seems like regulating anything other than their own is ok...

i dont care if someone holds a religious stance, but when they (like the church) use it to regulate the masses to include ones that do not agree is not right.

What you have a problem with - the same problem all the devout has with this topic - is they are no longer the "society that largely disagrees."

Tyranny of the majority on the topic of religion in general is quickly coming to an end. That's a problem which must be dealt with on all sides. Going away kicking and screaming is not making it any easier.

I have never had anyone come to my house and try to force atheism into my life,but I have had many times,(well until I taught my german shepherd to not let anyone come onto my property) religous brainwashed nut jobs come to my house and try to bother me with their beliefs. As I said before,I'm not an atheist,I have my beliefs and I don't need someone telling me theirs.
 
The Good of Believing In God

Atheism might be in vogue, but it - for sure - hasn't helped history as much as Christianity. Believing in God is not only among the most reasonable ideas in history; it is among its most helpful.

It is all too easy to look around the modern world and conclude that there is no place for the Church. The educational system is pervasively liberal, the media jumps at the chance to shame an odd-thinking church, and atheist organizations have long pushed into the public consciousness the idea that belief in God is illogical, a fantasy or a crutch for those too weak-minded to deal with the harsh realities of life, and that Christianity as a whole has done more harm than good to the world. But ever since its inception millennia ago, Christianity has contributed more to the world at large than any other ideology. When Christianity thrives, the culture and the world thrive as well. So what has Christianity contributed to the world, and what does it still have to give?

Although atheists might concede that there is no transcendent meaning to life, they are more than willing to take advantage of modern medical know-how to maintain their meaningless existence for as long as possible. And that medical knowledge is due in large part to the efforts of the Church. For centuries, the Christian call to serve and minister to the poor has resulted in the establishment of thousands of hospitals, shelters, and aid societies. According to an article by the Royal Historical Society of Great Britain, the earliest hospitals in Europe were as much religious as medical communities, and care of the sick was provided by nuns and monks who had dedicated their lives to the service of God. And though the post-Enlightenment emphasis on logic and science edged the Christian motivation to the background of some medical research, the fact remains that there would be no foundation to build on without the efforts of the Church.

Christianity has also been at the historical forefront of education. Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale; all of these famous centers of learning were established by clergy for furthering the study of Scripture, theology, and Church history. These major universities have since been responsible for centuries of breakthroughs in the studies of science, literature, history, and, yes, religion. And though these organizations have largely turned away from their Christian origins, those origins are there nonetheless. You would have to chisel the Bible verses out of the stone facades of their buildings to believe otherwise.

And Christianity was also the impetus for much that has made the United States the most generous nation in history. Almost every good thing the U.S. has ever done draws directly from its Christian roots; the cause that led a ragtag group of farmers, artisans, and preachers to take on the most powerful empire the world had ever known, and win. A government built on the principles of Christianity protected the God-given rights of its people and the good of the world at large. Governments built on atheist principles, on the other hand, have led to the deaths of millions of Jews in the Holocaust, the oppression of religious groups by the likes of Stalin and Mao, and the kind of pervasive corruption and vice that only happens in a system where morality is considered relative.

Of course, whenever the contributions of Christianity to mankind are mentioned, someone is sure to bring up the Crusades as an unanswerable argument for the destructive influence of the Church in history. But while there is no denying that the deaths of those in the Crusades were a tragedy with an estimated death toll ranging from 1 to 3 million people, the death toll of tragedies involving atheist tyrants is far, far higher. The Holocaust, a tragedy motivated primarily by the atheist Nazi regime, had an estimated death toll ranging from 4 to 17 million, depending on which source you consult. Estimated deaths of the Soviet government range from 8 to 61 million. This is certainly not to justify the atrocities committed in the name of Christianity, merely to put things in perspective. While awful as well, bad religion has been far less harmful than bad atheism.

Pope Benedict XVI, in a speech in Edinburgh in 2010, put it this way: "As we reflect on the sobering lessons of the atheist extremism of the twentieth century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of society."

Today, the consequences of Christianity are affecting people all over the world, from the reconciliation of genocide survivors and genocide perpetrators in Rwanda to nearly every homeless shelter in the United States. Millions of dollars of charitable funds are donated by churches every year toward humanitarian ends like eradicating poverty, finding cures for diseases like malaria and cancer, and providing clean water and employment to those without it. Atheism can make no comparable claims.

When Christianity influences culture, it leads to a reverence for human life, a desire to alleviate suffering, and the improvement of physical conditions for people all over the world. It means the freedom to express opinions, seek truth, and follow the leading of one's conscience. These guarantees make life especially worthwhile, and the world is better because of it. Period.

This mindset shows how utterly miserable christians make themselves.

I choose to spend my time living life vs. obsessing about my death. This includes not being concerned about imaginary characters, though the actions of people that believe in the fantasy can be be disturbing at times.

But the most amusing thing to me is the outrage at the supposed injustices they have to face, being white and Christian and middle-class in America in December, right around Christmas time.

Stores saying "Happy Holidays" and decorating festive yet non-denominational or outright secular trees. People having the gall to say X-mas instead of Christmas. What secular weirdo ever came up with the idea of censoring G_d's name in the first place?

Ah, a thousand year old tradition originating from Christians themselves. What's that? Christians not even understanding the origins and/or funny little details about the very religion and/or tradition they so cherish? Talking out of their ass at every conceivable opportunity?

Color me red and green... with surprise!

But yes, a public school for everyone, including people who are neither Christian nor religious, being inclusive by not making the Hindu or Jewish or Muslim or atheeeeeeeist kid feel unwelcome or unimportant by celebrating the "holidays", that, my friends, is the absolute height of religious persecution.

Oh the horrors of being middle-class white christian people in America around December 25th. It's almost as though you couldn't travel 25 feet without running into tinsel or shiny flickering lights adoring trees, bushes, houses, and an otherwise nude Mrs Claus when she's feeling particularly jolly. Manger scenes in every other yard. Churches somehow still prominently displaying crosses adorned with snow, somehow not burnt to the ground in this ever-damned post-Christian hellscape. The rapture, of course, being nigh. These are the end times. I read about it in a book written by a person with actual Biblical training, therefore it must be the word of G_d.

Who keeps censoring that word? Must be those thrice-damned atheists again!

But yes, the suffering, the unimaginable horror of being a Christian in a predominantly Christian country, with legal protections for religious freedom, speech, and private display (private as in, in public view on your private property). It is as though you couldn't walk into any store with shelves in America and buy several different flavors of candied cane.

I weep for the plight of the harried and noble Christian culture warrior, whose very existence is being threatened by the political might of all those great many atheists holding publicly elected office, whose campaign war chests surely dwarf the meager pockets of the few, the proud, the churchgoing.

I sadly drip tears of unimaginable sorrow when I think of all those state constitutions that require people to swear their non-belief in G_d in order to even legally hold public office. Thank goodness the Constitution of the United States overrides that insidious attempt by the power-hungry non-believers out there to prevent good and noble Christians from serving the country that they love, in spite of the fact that no politician would ever pander to them disingenuously by saying how much they support traditional family values while boinking mistresses, prostitutes, and the occasional bathroom stall buddy or rent-a-boy.

Woe! Woe and lamentation for those poor, poor children unable to find the word of Christ anywhere but at their home, at their friend's houses, and at church, and literally everywhere else but the few schools who have decided on a more secular path!

Why, the fact that a few schools have gone all the way toward acknowledging that Christians are not, in fact, the entire demographic of America, nor the triumphant and benevolent shepherds and overlords of civilized history, means that Christians now fully understand what it is to be oppressed.

It is slavery. It is apartheid. It is the end of Christendom itself!

Now, the white Christian middle-class American has tasted true oppression, and can now hang out in clubs reciting poetry which reveals in detail the pain and anguish they have suffered under the crushing foot of almighty Atheismo. The shoe now on the other foot, they can now put their hand on the shoulder of struggling and oppressed minorities and say, "I feel your pain".

They can now look into the eyes of those children who are homeless because their parents disowned them for being gay and tell them, without any hint of sarcasm, that their children are suffering as well, for not being able to spend a few hours on weekdays not hearing the name of Christ in publicly-funded song which everyone is either required to sing or stand aside, awkwardly, on stage, saying nothing and being the obvious sore thumb. Children are REALLY understanding about that whole odd-person-out thing, and would never be insulting or violent toward a child who is different.

Yes, Christmas warriors, as you sit with your families next to your Christmas tree adorned with festive lights, with a yule log in the fireplace, carefully wrapped gifts which you can easily afford to buy with your middle-class salaries, in your safe, privately-owned home on your privately-owned plot of land, with your house a veritable Las Vegas of Christendom, and the ever-present mass-produced jesus statue right there in his manger on your front lawn, in your safe neighborhood full of ethnically un-diverse and affluent people who all agree with your general belief system, in a rich and powerful nation that ferociously protects your rights of freedom and property, without worry of invasion or coup or rocket-propelled grenade, you have clearly tasted the hell of persecution.

You are losing the war on Christmas, and indeed, the war on America herself, unless you make certain that everyone is required by law or by threat of boycott to pledge allegiance to republic of an America under G_d, while wearing their patriotic flag pins, and say Merry Christmas instead of Happy holidays!

Because let me tell you something brother, you haven't tasted persecution until you've felt the pulsating, throbbing fear deep inside the heart of red state America, (also known as Real 'Merica) that one day, sometime in the distant future, they will not hold the utter monopoly on wealth, power, status, and thought in a multicultural and religiously diverse melting pot of America. It's fine that we have your tired, poor, and huddled masses yearning to breathe free, as long as they only exhale the words "Merry Christmas" with those breaths.

You see, those other people in our melting pot are more than welcome, as long as they speak flawless English, and believe in the same god, and are of the same cultural and ethnic background as we are, or are courteous enough to live in some impoverished ghetto which is N.I.M.B.Y. and never once accept government assistance, such as, say, tax reductions for having a child or a mortgage. Or a deduction for that fact-finding business trip to Las Vegas where, by the way, your gambling losses were also tax write-offs. Those ungrateful minorities, always suckling at the government's teat without having to pay their own fair share! That's OUR THING!

I wish you a sincere Happy Holidays during this time of year which I know is particularly hard on pretentious pampered ignorant blowhards who have always had everything in their lives go exactly their own very privileged way, as the mere acknowledgement of there being other people in this country not exactly like yourselves is just too much stress for your sheltered ******* little weeping hearts to bear.

If only you could just tear yourselves away from your blogs freely explaining in horrid, ignorant detail how much your God hates the queers, whilst simultaneously decrying your loss of religious freedom at the expense of others' intolerance, while wondering aloud (with a straight face) just who in the hell it was who took the Christ out of Christmas, and realize how much of a tool you are, it would truly be a Christmas miracle.

Also, that Duck Dynasty guy is pretty much the conservative's idea of Jesus. He just tried to explain how he never met a black person who suffered under Jim Crow laws, and how awful gay people are, which I'm pretty sure is the message Jesus died on a cross for, and all those people with thoughts in their heads got all pissy. What's their deal anyway? Freedom of speech means never having to hear other people tell you how much of a ******* blowhard you are, right?

Pure unadulterated bull excrement, but what is really so sad is you allow a fairy tale to fill you hate an loathing. I really pity people that blindly follow this nonsense into a life filled with loathing of those with different views. The moment you propose Pascal's Wager is the moment you've conceded the argument.

Pascal's Wager isn't an argument for why god exists and is really real. Pascal's Wager is, in fact, 100% disconnected from the question of whether god exists and is really real. Pascal's Wager offers no evidence for god's existence -- not even the shaky "evidence" of the appearance of design or the supposed fine-tuning of the universe or the feelings in your heart. It offers no logical argument for why god must exist or probably exists -- not even the paper-thin "logic" of the First Cause argument. It does not offer one scrap of a positive reason for thinking that god is real.

Pascal's Wager is misdirection. Distraction. It's a way of drawing attention away from how crummy the arguments for God actually are. It's an evasion: a slippery, dodgy, wanna-be clever trick to avoid the actual argument. It's a way of making the debater feel wily and ingenious, while ignoring the actual question on the table.

It isn't an argument. It's an excuse for why you don't have an argument. And it's a completely pathetic excuse.

If you're relying on Pascal's Wager for your faith, you might as well believe in unicorns or elves, Zoroaster or Zeus, the invisible dragon in Carl Sagan's garage or the Flying Spaghetti Monster who brought the world into being through his blessed noodley appendage. Pascal's Wager is every bit as good an argument for these beliefs as it is for any religion that people currently believe in.

If you had a better argument for god, you'd be making it. You'd be offering some good evidence for why god exists; some logical explanation for why god has to exist. You wouldn't be resorting to this lazy, slippery, bet-hedging, shot-full-of-holes excuse for why you don't have to actually think about the question.

It is a clear attempt to instill irrational fear to somehow cause someone to believe in the absurd, and it fails miserably with any rational person.
