I have never been in LE and I have never thought that a gun should be carried without being ready to fire upon drawing it from its holster. Why else would you be carrying it in the first place. That being said I own no gun that isn't ready to fire at any time, unless it is being cleaned or transported to a range.

There are two flaws in the logic that says carrying without a round in the chamber is Ok since it only takes a very short time to rack a round in.........
Of course flaw #1 is the assumption there will always be enough time to rack the slide..
And flaw #2 is the assumption that the other hand will always be free (not grappling with the bad guy or trying to push a loved one out of the way/out of harm's way) and/or that hand will not be broken or cut and slippery with blood... yours or the bad guy's ...and your other hand will always be physically able to manipulate the slide.
Of course a slide can be racked in other ways.... hooking the rear sight onto a belt or shoe sole... but those are emergency moves that, unless practiced extensively, have great potential to not work under stress. And those emergency moves definitely take more time than having a round in the chamber and just drawing and shooting.

If no round in the chamer then you are not protected. I all ways have a round in the chamer.

I'll expand a bit on that...
When I'm cleaning my EDC, I have another loaded pistol laying on the bench. Yes, there's one in the pipe too.

WIthout a round in the chamber, all a gun is is an over-priced paperweight! 15+1 in my EDC and it's on my side right now!

One of the reasons I chose my CCW was because I was certain of it's design and function. IMO If I'm not comfortable carrying a weapon locked and loaded I don't carry it.
If you are unsure of yours I suggest further research into it's function, or shopping for a different weapon you do trust.

Not necessary to have a round in the chamber. Carry a baseball bat down your pant leg to occupy the aggressor while you chamber a round. Oh, wait - that takes three hands. OK, how about this - a button on your belt that sets off a siren and several fireworks (rockets are good) to distract the BG while you chamber a round. Hmmm. That seems excessive. How about just wearing a medical emergency bracelet that instructs the Coroner how to chamber a round. That works. If the Coroner is attacked anyway.

If a rd is not chambered or the gun is not for whatever reason ready to shoot when you pick it up, you are carrying a exspensive club to a gunfight, because if something should happen where you may need to use your weapon, at that moment you may or may not turn into a basket case of nerves, in any case the last thing on your mind is racking your gun or takeing the safety off, unless you carry a revolver, and have the whole cyl loaded

An attacker with a knife swings at you. You actually were able to react and deflect or block the blow. You feel some pain and see blood dripping from your hand from the corner of your eye and you realize your hand has been severly damaged. With your block you've managed to stagger the attacker for enough time to draw your gun but your weak hand is too damaged to grip the slide and rack a round in the chamber. Ok, same attack but this time you have not staggered the attacker and he is persistant so you do not have enough time to draw but eventually you've managed block or deflect his follow up attacks enough and have managed pin his arm somehow with your weak hand giving you just enough time to draw. If you let go you will shurly be cut more severly and at this point you have likely been cut already. Just some realistic situations where there would be no way you would be able to use both hands to operate your gun. Please.... carry with one in the pipe. Also, Please take some self defense training especially in empty hand defense. Just my advice. Krav Maga is an easy to learn, realistic fighting system. You may not always have the advantage of distance to put down an attack.
I carry my SW 380 most often and in front, IWB. No way would I have a loaded anything pointed at my lap. Most of you talk like you are fighting crime 24/7 in the wild streets of a third world country. If you are getting yourself into situations that surprise constantly you, become aware.

No I for one speak as a person who has TRAINED and is PREPARED while being aware. Having gun is the same as having insurance. They have to be READY to be used. If you do not put the check in the mail and wreck you're car the policy did you no good. If the BG turns out to be next to you and while you are trying to work the action he is grabbing you're wife, daughter, son, mother , father or other you just wasted the very few precious moments you COULD have acted doing something that should already have been done to make the gun READY to use. As already stated I can take you on the range and in 20 min show you why the whole idea of carrying a unloaded gun is akin to trying to drive a car without starting it.
