yeehaw, wow i just happened to get back to this post. i should have known OC would be such a hot issue. i wish i had paid closer attention so i could have responded to the lieutenant's response to my post. sir, number one: i hold you in pretty high regard, my post was not an attack on those who choose to OC; in fact, i applaud open carry. number two: i often speak in hyperbole; i wasn't quoting real life statistics. by "98% of the time" what i meant was "more often than not". kind of like rush limbaugh claiming to be right "99.8% of the time" lol. i apologize, i'll be more careful with my wording in the future.

The story does give some credence to the other arguments about the BG grabbing an OC gun. I wonder how much the holster selection had to do with the ease of the BG getting the gun.

Posing a serious question here, dusted. Can I ask by what research and statistics you have read or seen that justifies a conclusion that open carry is a bad idea "more often than not?" I would like to see real research and statistics to support that assertion as it is made quite a lot, and I haven't seen any research or history to indicate that it is true "more often than not."

That said, there are certainly persons in locations and situations where concealed carry is the much better choice.

Those kids didn't have a gun until they took it from the OCer, and apparently he was targeted for that very reason. This country is rife with bad areas populated with hoodrats like these perps. And when they get cars, they drive into nice areas. If/when a million people start OCing in this country on a daily basis, stories like this will be more common.

Open versus concealed carry aside, there was a struggle before the BG got the gun away. That suggests that the carrier had the opportunity to prevent the disarm. He obviously needed more training in retention technique. This is a much neglected aspect of carry.

Wow is that ever wrong. The 2A versus Brady Campaign is full of facts when supporting the 2nd Amendment. We now have like 40 states that have "shall issue", crime consistently goes down when "shall issue" is instituted particularly confrontational crime. Gun control typically yeieds either no change or an increase in crime. Take a look at both of John Lott's books and become familiar with the facts.

I was unclear.

I have read "More Guns, Less Crime". I stipulate the correlation, but no one can prove to a certainty that more guns cause less crime. The 2A side of the argument is based on the idea that to enhance self-defense with a weapon is rational, but the Brady side is based purely on feelings. So the manifestations of both the 2A/Brady and CC/OC arguments do not turn on facts.

I have to admit, if it weren't for my OC holster being equipped with a retention lock I would be more nervous about my OC. The lock isn't a guarantee that no one could get my gun from me, but it does put an impediment in their way, hopefully sufficient enough to give me time to react.

Personally, I'd rather have the ability to draw and fire quickly rather than have to take the time to pull up my shirt to get access to my IWB weapon.

I think there are always going to be situations where someone made the wrong choice, whether good or bad. But if you think about it, there's no way to say that any one preference is superior to the other. The simple fact is, it depends on the circumstances of the particular event. I learned this when someone asked what the odds are that a flipped coin will land on heads? The answer, 50/50. Now, what are the odds it will land on heads if you flip it 10 times? It's still 50/50 because each flip is its own, unique toss.
