Have you open carried?

I usually OC just around town but this past week I went on a road trip (1700 miles) and OC'd the entire trip.
I started off in NM and went thru Colorado and Utah and then back to NM. I did get a lot of reactions probably because I was on the motorcycle and dressed in full leathers.
The reactions ranged from people taking pictures to one middle aged man (50-60) asking if I was a bounty hunter. He also said that when someone carried, he thought they had to have it covered up so people wouldn't see it.
I wish I would have taken a picture of the teenager that looked terrified in the gas station in Blanding, UT. His look was priceless.
I even had a few state police pull next to me and jesture to the gun. I just gave them a peace sign and they left me alone.
OC is the only way I carry and people do react to it. People seem to be more polite and not as hostile. Hell, even some kids in Albuquerque were polite and that took me by surprise.

During the work week I'll open carry however in the evenings and weekends I mostly conceal carry.

Depends on the weather and my attire. To date I haven't been hassled or questioned about my Sidearm, including speaking to deputy sheriffs due to a not so well liked neighbor who was trying to stir up trouble but only made himself look more ignorant LOL.

Location: Kentucky

Kentucky is an OC state - but you have to have a Kentucky CCDW License to CC. I OCed ever where I went until I got my CCDW License. I never had any problens at all with OC here.

I carry a Bersa Thunder 9 UC Pro for both OC and CC in a Vega leather holster with a thumb break on my right hip at 3 o'clock.

I want to here from the guys who have tried it. Did you like it? Will you change modes of carry? Did you try, but never again? If you never gave it a reasonable try, don't post. If you only did in your house, don't post. Hunting doesn't count either. I'm talking about "out and about" without mentioning Walmart. Ok, I was just kidding about Walmart. You guys get the idea.

I have never open carried. I would prefer to have my weapon remain concealed.

Nice......can't say you are the first though...don't know if that's makes your post better or worse.....

In Oct 2007 I was open carrying in a store, A guy walks inside sees me open carrying and being alert and he immediately turned around and left. The guy then traveled about 1 mile west to another very similiar store and comitted an armed robbery at the other store a person was knocked in the head too. This guy, having been caught admitted that he had planned on robbing the store I was in but quickly changed his mind when he saw the armed guy in there (me). Open carry was the only thing that kept me from having to react to an armed robbery. See if had been carrying concealed, the guy would have wen t ahead with the robbery and I would have had to react to it and who knows how that would have turned out.

Concealed carry does not deter any of the threats, since you appear unarmed like everybody else, open carry may not deter a determined murderer nothing much will. but there are a great deal of criminials who have no desire to insigate a conflict with someone they know is armed they will just go find an easier location or unarmed person.

Where are all these guys targeting open carry citizens? I never hear about gun grabs or open carry citizens being shot by criminials. Only people that I ever hear that stuff from is people in cc only states or people against open carry. I know that cops get targeted by criminials/gang etc sometimes but it is not open carrying that is doing it it is their status so that's different

People will look at you stare some, some ask 'are you a cop?" answer "no'" "then why do you have a gun?" It doesn't matter how you answer the 2nd question because the people that ask believe that only cops and criminals need guns so if you answer no to the cop question, they already think your the other one

Did you get mistaken for a Power Ranger?

Unarmed man attempts to rob EMU student of holstered gun

There was a story linked to on this site not long ago, where an OCer was disarmed by his attacker and robbed.

It does happen. Man I think I would die of sheer embarrassment.

I don't open carry because it isn't legal here.

This is one I haven't heard of. This allegedly makes three open carriers targets. Here's a link to at least 30 concealed carriers being targeted.

What I take from your story, is that it is not "easy" to gun grab someone who has a holstered firearm.

I open carry everywhere I go with the winter exception. I've had several people notice that I carry. Half of them were supportive, the other half were your typical antis. One even sent her kid to interrogate me.

Only had one person try to grab my gun, and it failed. If you're afraid of OCing because you think somebody is going to grab your gun, then get a retention holster. Even one with a simple snap strap will work. Be aware of your surroundings. Have somebody practice with you if you can and work on ways to keep the gun in the holster and under control until you choose to draw it.

I've been open carrying for over a year now and I much prefer it to concealed (IWB) carrry.

No problems with "citizens" and it's a very comfortable way to carry.

i think that open carry is a good idea and i feel that it is somewhat better depending on where you are located and what your surroundings are. i like open carry because it makes me feel like i have more control. personal opinion.

I have not opened carried. I is just a matter of choice for me, the less attention I draw to myself I believe the better off I will be.

To shame... According to these thugs in here if you choose not to open carry you must be against open carry and a member of the Brady Bunch. You're allowed to have a choice as long as it is to open carry.

According to the rabid CC only folks who bash OC those who OC are idiots, attention seekers, their purpose is to "scare" people, they will be targeted for a gun grab, and... they will be "shot first". Yet when asked to provide cites and/or links to verifiable proof of those assertions all that is heard is......

crickets.

Oddly enough it is unusual for an OC'er to bash CC but it is commonplace for CC'ers to come to the OC section of the forum for the sole purpose of... bashing OC.

And a very important thing I would like for people to understand... a carry "permit" is NOT the right to bear arms! It is the exact kind of infringement referred to in "shall not be infringed" because it is the government in charge of giving.. or denying.. permission to who can, and who cannot!, bear an arm in a concealed manner. It annoys me to no end to have a CC'er complain about OC... and then say they support the right to bear arms. They are NOT supporting the right to bear arms... they are supporting the government's control of bearing concealed arms!!!!!!

I personally don't care how someone legally carries... I respect your personal choice. All I would like is to have that same respect for my choices in return.

Ok... my Friday morning rant is over..

Actually the arguments on this topic are usually in reverse of what you have written. Most of the bias comes from the ardent CC crowd. Check some of the other carry websites. Personally, I celebrate both modes of carry and even though I almost always open carry, I do conceal when I deem it to be in my better interests at a given time and place.

We waste too much time arguing amongst ourselves for essentially the same thing: the carrying of a defensive sidearm. This only feeds the anti crowd as they like nothing better to see division in our ranks. Come on people, we're all in this together so let's quit harping on carry modes and just let things go as they will. In my state, OC'ing is a no-brainer and a non-issue. For those in states where open carry is not an issue, do as you see fit for YOU.

Once again, I fully support and encourage both modes of carry and my only concern is that good people not go unarmed.
