handgun Advice

I am looking to get a handgun in the next couple weeks, and I need some suggestions.
These are the specs I am looking for.
Size: Full size
Type: Double Action Only
Caliber: 9mm
price Range: around $500-600 max
Age: The newer the better
Grip: Polymer/metal (I hate wood)
Magazine: 10-17
Add-on: built in Picatinny rail on bottom (optional)
other: Safety switch
I was looking at the Beretta Px4 Storm Type F full size but, it doesn't come in double action only. I don't like the type D because it has no safety. My question is do they make a conversion kit for the Type F or D. It also has to be one that I won't need to go to a gunsmith for(I don't have that much extra cash). Any suggestions with links would be helpful, thank you.

I will have to check this gun out at the next gun show.
I like the striker fired over the hammer fired. It is under my price range and leaves me enough extra to get some more ammo.

About the DAO (double action only), is obsolete, no one produce that any more, this was a product of the 80's a layer-liberal-political correctness, because police were charged with shoot to fast. Latter that was destroyed in court, and everything came back to normal. Latter a similar to DAO, came with the Striking system like Glock, In my case with more than 45 years of shooting experience always what to have control of my hammer, I need to see it for safety reason. If you still like the striking system I suggest you SW M&P, you can not go wrong in price, rounds and quality. Regards Hector

Try finding a gun range near you that rents out different hanguns to test fire. Having the oppurtunity to fire different types will help you decide which one you feel most comfortable with. Try before you buy can be very valuable in helping you make a decision you won't regret later.

Can't rule out the Glock reliable and safe... But it sounds like you want something with a mechanical safety... The best advice is below... You may find that your opinion might change and you'll fall in love with something totally different than what you imagined.

I'll second the Sig P250. You get everything you want with it except the mechanical safety...but the only way it fires is a full trigger pull so you really don't need one. You can get a 2sum (all the parts to make a full sized or sub compact and swap between the two sizes) on buds or gunbroker for $550ish. Just make sure you like the trigger pull on the DAO before you jump.

Sounds to me like the Glock 19 would be a good fit for you i.m.h.o.
It's not 'full size' it's 'perfect size'.

The safety switch is 'built in'.
Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire!

Glocks are very safe, unless you are dense like this clown.

My regular gal is a Glock G26 sub-compact 9mm with extended mag/grip. Titanium FP safety, LS Titanium Striker, TruGlo TFO sights, Crimson Trace Laser, Softuck IWB holster.

A friend has the PX4 Storm sub-compact type-F (DA/SA with safety) .40 cal. Conceals well and shoots dead-on with managable recoil. I like it very much.

The BATFE put the Glock in the DAO category because it is only a little over half cocked until the trigger is operated. I don't know if it has been reclassified since then or not.

Here is a great inter-active illustration showing the inner works in action. If you us the buttons in the lower left corner, you can see the trigger and "striker" (I believe Glock still calls it the firing pin) in operation.

It should be noted that if you're looking for the classic "rear-of-frame" mounted safety switch, only the Rugers, of all the pistols mentioned, come standard with those. (I'm not as personally familiar with Sig Sauer - I think it depends on the model with them.) Glocks have only the trigger-mounted safety. Springfield XD has the trigger and grip mounted safeties. Smith and Wesson M&P has only a trigger safety standard, but "rear-of-frame" safety can be ordered.

With that said - these are all good, safe guns.

It should also be noted that single-action guns such as the 1911 style are safe as well, and just as deployable into action as the DAO guns once you are able to get past the mental hurdle of carrying cocked-and-locked.

Instead of listening to what everone is telling you go to the gun store look around do not buy something because its pretty or popular. Handle many different styles of handguns. Find what is comfortable for your hand. Each person hand size is different no to people are ever the same. Make sure that you can use the safety and magazine release with out any stretching and that it is a fluid movement it should feel "natural". If you plan on carrying think about the overall weight of the weapon how you are going to carry the handgun, are you comfortable with the placement of everything so if you ever have to pull the gun you will be able to perform with out any flaws. I looked at about 30-40 different handguns prior to finding what was perfect.

I agree with the M&P. I have both the M&P Pro 9mm and the M&P .45ACP. I use both for IDPA competition. If you really want a DAO, the M&P is classed as just that for IDPA purposes.
