Gun Under the Seat....

It may be a plus for us, but it is not right. Regular citizens should not be deprived of their rights or required to register with the state to do this.... and that is what having to get a permit is all about, registering with the state.

I agree it should be for everyone and I'm a firm believer that the 2A should be our permit to carry. Every change has to start somewhere and this change opens still another door. We have come a long way in the last decade and it started with small changes to the law. A bill was introduced last year to do away with permits but it was too early to bring up that bill. Even though most of the legislators in Columbia are fairly conservative when it comes to our 2A rights they're still a lot of hold outs when it comes to total independence from 2A restrictions. The only way to get this done is to get rid of those that still want to restrict out rights. Everyone needs to do their homework and do our own campaigning for those that will support our rights. Right now I'll take anything they want to give us.

Very true. We have become this restricted over a long period of time. It's going to take a bit of time to undo it all.

then the person also may secure his weapon under a seat in a vehicle, or in any open or closed storage compartment within the vehicle's passenger compartment

This looks lie a very bad bill to me and could lead to someone getting trapped into a violation big time. Much like the mess where some LEO said that with a CWP you couldn't have it in your glove box any more. Note the word secure. It says that CWP holder may SECURE his weapon in any of those places. What does secure mean? Does in mean in a locked box, a holster, a string tied around it or just lying there. Don't get excited especially since it probably won't get taken up by the Senate.

Link to page with actual bill and info.

I think the key word here is MAY secure. May is not a mandatory term. As far as the LEO's that said you couldn't have it in a glove box anymore, well that was quickly taken care of. Same thing will happen with this if they try anything. I think they learned their lesson on the glove box fiasco. You can read into any law and find a pessimistic view. Unlike many states so far our legislatures haven't tried to trap any of us in 2A laws. I read this proposed law at face value and not seeing anything amiss other than it's not written for everyone.

I put an old belt around the seat bottom, bought a cheap holster on e-bay and mounted it to the belt with snaps my 9mm sits on the front of the seat right between my legs but not in my way and very accessible and I can just unsnap the holster and take it with me if I want . I live in Nevada and it's legal here

A Democrat is sponsoring this bill? A little surprising but not totally since he's from Denmark. I used to work down in that area and there are a lot of good people down there.

Under the seat doesn't interest me but the door pocket does. I like to carry there since it is easier to go from the door pocket to my pocket inconspicuously than from the console. I haven't thought about the sun visor but for a small (LCP/P3AT/TCP) pistol that could be an option.

People get brain washed by internet drivel and the various TV and Radio tripe into believing Democrats are all liberal and socialist.

For years S.C. was a democrat state and lots of folks still are and still have 'old' ideas.

Putting the gun under the seat is completely ignorant, well, In my opinion. Why would anyone want to do that? It should either be on your hip, or in a lock box. Ive only done it once, and that was simply because my lock box wasnt with me, and I didnt think to grab it on my way out. I had to work, but still, locked the car properly, in a security guard patrolled area.
Theres several problems to placing it under the seat, [passengers in the car] may be able to gain access to it without your knowledge, and, if your car has nothing to stop it, it may slide out and get lodged beneath your gas pedal or your break pedal. Not only that, but its an obstacle to get past, when in a self defense situation.

Theres almost no benefit to storing it there, Id hope you dont ever consider it.

SC folks contact your state reps....

just joined the forum after finding this post. I'm very interested in this legislation. I'm not all that interested in putting my gun under my truck seat, but the language that allows for having the gun "in any open or closed storage compartment within the vehicle's passenger compartment" is intriguing. some have already mentioned that this could include door pockets which would seem to be a good place for a gun. I contacted my state rep and senator and got favorable responses from both. I encourage the SC folks here to do the same.

First of all welcome to the forum, footballboy3. I think everyone here is with you as far as not caring for the under seat carry portion of the bill. The other parts of the bill is a plus. You did what everyone should do, contact their reps. I'm pretty sure the bill will pass and if vetoed they will override it like they have done on other bills.

any and all places that are legal to carry a gun is a good step to regain lost rights, if all we get is baby steps we need to take them. A cheap holster with a thumb break and enclosed at the muzzle on a belt can be fashioned quite securely and accessibly under your seat if you had too.
