Firearms Ownership and right to Carry Concealed

Can more then one person carry concealed a registered firearm that was purchased by let's say a Husband can carry a Wife's Firearm and vice versa or only the purchaser can carry concealed that specific firearm.

Depends on where you live.

Remember, permits are not a right, so your topic thread should read firearms ownership and my privilege to carry concealed in Florida.

Yep, check your State Laws. MOST States do not issue a CC permit against any one certain weapon.

Living in Sunny Florida so I'll check out state ruling on subject.
Guess we don't have one nation with one take on subject.
Thanks for quick reply though.

Our handguns aren't registered here in Iowa. We are issued a "Permit to Purchase a Handgun" by the county sheriff. The dealer only has to keep paperwork on the purchase in the event of an audit. Otherwise, no one else knows that I own a handgun.

Victor1... be thankful we don't have "one nation with one take". Wishing for the Federal government to be in charge of all would be the final coffin for America. States have rights that the Federal government doesn't and shouldn't have (read the 10th Amendment). One of them is health care... hmmmm, how's that going lately? Could you imagine a Federal gun permit???? I shudder to think of it. It would be as restrictive as the most restrictive of states (think NY, CA, NJ, IL), since no state that is restrictive on firearms wants the feds to force them to lift that restriction.

As for your question, most states (and maybe all, I'm not sure) do not make you personally register a specific firearm under your name. For example, in PA, we have a LTCF (a license to carry a firearm). As long as the firearm is a legal firearm, it doesn't even have to be mine or belong to someone in my family for me to be carrying. I'm licensed to carry a firearm, period.

This site should be able to answer that question for you concerning Florida. I would doubt your state makes you register your firearm... Florida is one of the better states on gun issues.

Are there any states where your CCW is tied to the firearm you actually purchased? My first thought on this thread was this is just baloney but now I wonder. In this crazy country asylum currently ruled by its inmates, nothing surprises me anymore. How ridiculous can this be? If so---everytime you buy a firearm you need a new CCWP to go with it and must carry the right permit with the right firearm. As I write this, I just cannot think this is just absolutely crazy and ridiculous.

There is no national registry of firearms in America. In most states, you can carry any gun that meets the definition of a handgun in that state. Here in Oklahoma, it does not matter who owns the gun, you can carry it. No one cares, unless it is stolen, then you might ultimately get in trouble if you are found in possession of a stolen firearm.

Here is a Wiki link that shows registration requirements by state. It is Wiki, so it may be subject to error.

Someone did post on this forum that the gun is tied to the permit in his state. I cannot remember who it was. I want to say it was one of the Carolinas but not 100% sure... Anyways, maybe he will chime in.

This again is a state by state issue - here in Louisiana, the law recently changed and now requires that in order to carry a weapon, you have to have qualified with it - meaning, when you take your CCW class as required by law, you have to shoot the weapon you intend to carry. Funny thing about it, is that there is no record anywhere, on your license or any paperwork, that states what weapon you qualified with, nor is there a weapon registration requirement. Some states have qualification requirements for type of firearm (revolver, semi-auto).

There's at least one state where the gun(s) you will carry have to be listed on your permit. And at least one other where your permit is issued for revolvers only, or revolvers and pistols, depending on what you qualified with. In the first case, I suppose both husband and wife could list the same gun on each of their permits.

Here in Oklahoma, you are certified to carry the type gun you qualified with and all those below it, Semi-Auto, Revolver and Derringer.

Here in Michigan if you have a CCW licence you can carry any gun, whether you own it or not as long as it is legal (ie: not stolen). That is the way it should be in all states but I wouldn't want a federal law demanding it. Really, it should be up to the individual to make sure that they are trained and competent with any gun that they would carry for defensive purposes and not the government. We need to fight for our freedoms at every point because the anti gun crowd doesn't give up and will never go away. We need to be more tenacious and passionate as they are if we are going to get our rights back into the peoples hands where they belong.

Texas has no requirement on specific pistol, just that if you qualified with a revolver that is what you carry...if you qualify with a semi-auto, you can carry any legal pistol.

Interesting to see that there is a qualification process to show your skill with a firearm in some states. Here in WI you only need to attend the required class and pass a multiple choice test. No firearms were involved except the ones the instructor had for demo purposes. It was really simple actually and I received my permit within two weeks.

In Oklahoma, there is no marksmanship requirement for the shooting portion of the class. The purpose of the shooting is to determine if the class members are able to safely manipulate and shoot the category of firearm they choose to use to qualify. Some states, such as Texas, do have a marksmanship requirement.

There is no firearms registration in Florida. There is no requirement for a specific firearm or type of firearm on the Florida license, either:

Statutes & Constitution :View Statutes : Online Sunshine

So, you are able to carry any firearm that you can conceal, regardless of who purchased it, again so long as it isn't stolen.

Be advised, it is still illegal to receive firearms from out of state from a private party without going through an FFL for transfer - so it would be illegal for a resident of a different state than Florida to give or sell you a firearm, without transferring it through an FFL - but that is outside the scope of the question you asked.
