I'm about as pro gun as it gets but this guy is not in an area where you shouldn't be shooting guns with kids running around and stuff off that nature his backstop can barely be considered a backstop as a neighbor it's just a **** move

I'm sure those neighbors wouldn't care if their was a meth lab or pot garden, but they get their thongs in a bunch when a law abiding citizen practices his constitutional rights.

I am a super pro gun guy but this is crazy. Not because he wants to shoot in his back yard but that has go to be the lamest "gun range" I've ever seen. There are no safeguards for an accidental shot. A gun range should have a much wider and taller barrier to catch any errant shot. The man is a fool and the city should pass a law regulating the size of safety barrier.

John Best I've seen some ignorant comments, and so far today yours is at the top of the list. That is the most pitiful excuse for a safe "Gun Range" I've ever seen. You want to do this then go to the country and not in a residential neighborhood. To say they would welcome a Meth lab or pot garden is just about as dumb a statement as there is.

If anything the boy should have built up his target area torwads his own house instead of towards the side of the yard that way he would be shooting towards his own house instead of pointing towards the neighbors home if he missed he would hit his own house

Look, I am the most pro-gun person there can be and believe everyone law abiding citizens of the USA (and the world) should be armed and carrying. This "range" however does not meet even minimum safety standards. If, he wants to have a gun range in his backyard, fine if i had the funds I would have one too, but you gotta make it a proper safe gun range. It would cost roughly $2,000-2,500 to build a 1 lane gun range that anything from a 22lr-500 s&w wouldn't be about to get through, and it would be perfectly safe.

Mark, I don't think you are understanding what I am saying for that much money you could make an indoor 1 lane shooting range. To where it would be IMPOSSIBLE to shootout of it.

His mound of sand will be adequate for his 9mm—if every shot is on target. Even the best shooters sometimes flinch or jerk the trigger and send one wild. I think he needs a wall or some other backdrop angled to deflect the bullets safely and walls on the sides. He's got a big pile of sand in his yard. How long until a little boy leaves a metal toy car or rock on the sand pile? Unless he is careful, something like that could cause a dangerous ricochet. If there is the slightest accident, he is going to be sued. I respect his right to do this, but I think he should think it through a little more. It is one thing to shoot at a bunch of dirt out in the country miles from any houses, but it is a lot more risky in a neighborhood.

The back drop is unreasonably inadequate. he does need a much larger backdrop with a better method of retaining the sand. maybe if he had that and 5 rows deep of sand bags behing it running the length and height of his fence I could see where he has a valid point. But this pallet and sand box looks like something a liberal would build to further degrade rights. once you see what he built no one with any firearms expiernce can agree this to be safe with kids Or adults running around behind it.

John, it doesn't take being a structional engineer to know how to build a safe shooting range, all it takes is a little common sense and a little bit of structural know how which any of average intelligence should have.

Curtis Anderson I have 3 acres in a semi-residential area. I would not pile a bunch of sand in my yard and call it a gun range. I have too much respect for my neighbors and their safety. I have 4 acres in the country with a hell of a big elm tree to shoot at.

I shoot my Guns Every week. I'm all about the 2nd ammendment and shall not be infringed, but with that comes Responsibility, Safety and Common Sense. I commend him for exercisig his rights of gun ownership, But he's an idiot and only setting responsible gun ownership backwards by pressing this issue. Bullets Ricochet, guns misfire and accidents happen. This is a very UNSAFE range setup and I agree if he was going to build an irresponsible range he should have pointed it at his own house.

(sarcasm) He looks like he is in his early 20's when we were all young and dumb. I would have done something stupid like that too but his dad needs to step in and give him the "common sense" talk. There are a lot of things we have the "right" to do but dont because of common sense.

If it is legal and he's being safe, I have no problem with him using his land as he wishes. However, he should take some consideration for his neighbors whether he's within his rights or not. Instead of giving them a learning moment about freedom and gun safety, he is likely just driving them into the "ban all guns" camp. If every shot he makes is well aimed, his mound of sand should be adequate—if... I think he should at least have some cinder blocks or a brick wall behind the sand. 9mm, which is what Carannate says he'll be shooting. is a pretty weak bullet, but it still has the potential of doing harm. I've thought about moving so that I would have a place to shoot my guns without having to pack up a bunch of gear, driving twenty or so miles, paying a range fee....

I have and still do live in St. Petersburg Fl. Outdoor gun ranges were and still are the norm. I remember in my youth attending an outdoor range named he St. Petersburg Police Gun Club off of 1street North and 44th ave. North at the foot of the Shore acres community. I also remember folks target practicing in their back yards in my neighborhood in the Woodlawn area and that was the 1970's. I see no problem with what he is doing and if his little range is built correctly and its strong enough then so what?" The young man seems to me to be responsible enough.

Oh boy, media spin favor the PC idiots. I don't think it's neighborly, the you man should of put his target container toward his house. The real fools is the city ordnance people. Most urban zoning areas prohibit gunfire period. There's many nice pellet guns, perfect for practice. Now this guy has a bunch of drama queens for neighbors. That's why I bought few rural acres just so I can play with my tannerite any time I wish. All 4 of my neighbors do the same. We shure don't need 911 out here.

His backstop is insufficient. Yeah, I'm a gun guy and I'm not opposed to /what/ he's doing.... I'm opposed to /how/ he's doing it. If he's going to shoot in such a tight area, he needs better containment. A few pallets lashed together to hold in some sand isn't the best way.... or even the way you should be doing it in a neighborhood. One of the old school hollywood stars (James Cagney??) had a gun range in his basement... it was a drain culvert 50' long buried out the side of his basement across the yard.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. I use to have a range in my backyard. My neighbors would come over and use it. There was nothing but woods for over a mile until they started building a subdivision back there. I stopped shooting and moved.

I'm 72 years old, have been around guns for a long time. I even taught my children how to handle rifles, and handguns. In the house guns were always loaded. My son at age 10, had his own loaded 22 rifle in his closet. He would take it out when we went shooting, never played with it, neither did my daughters. Responsibility goes a long way. To this day they still know how to handle them. Still, this man should not be allowed to fire his guns in his front yard, there are places for that. We used to go out in the desert, nobody around for miles.

Come on John Best.. Man I have many small countries out gunned... But I also have an 8yo wife and daughter living at my house.. I would have a problem if this guy built that to shoot at towards my house! Even worse we are talking about a 21 yo.. Who very well could have a few of his buddies over and we know how 21 yo's think... That is no where sufficient to be a backstop. It may not be an accident waiting to happen but why take the chance with your neighbors lives?
