Ammo Storage Without Gun Safe

I don't lock up my guns or my ammo... besides locking up my apartment. No one should be coming in here anyways... I live alone.

Didn't catch the bolded part the first time. By definition your apartment isn't secure, other people besides you have access to your apartment and your stuff.

I converted a small cleaning supply closet in my utility room into an ammo closet. Added a metal door jam and lock. Key is in my gun safe. Determined thieves could remove the door, but at least all they would get is ammo - no guns. Larger quantities stored in ammo cans on the floor of the closet labeled with caliber and quantity. Day to day ammo stored on shelves. I also added a seven shelf unit from Lowes made for pantry doors on the wall to store extra magazines, targets, and the like.

The majority of my ammo is in the safe, emergency stashes elsewhere of course, however prier to getting the safe the ammo was in the garage in metal ammo cans. No issues at all with moisture or problems with the rounds. I just got concerned about the what if's and fire and the amount of rounds that were not in a safe. I need another safe though. running out of room for guns.

I store most of it in my lock tool box out in the garage.

Thats why I said supposed to be... anyone illegally entering my apartment is doing so illegally. The owners/management also cannot legally enter, key or not, unless its an emergency. When they want in, they schedule it, and I am there.


I'm on a third floor I cannot get a heavy safe into. I also am not allowed to make changes like bolting something to the floor. If someone is breaking in to my apartment, any safe I actually could have could be stolen or broken into as well, meaning my guns are still gone... I don't see what I could do to change this. I'd need a very large heavy safe that they couldn't open, or get down the stairs easy enough to want to do it.

Have you thought about a lockable two or four drawer filing cabinet. Most thieves don't think twice about a filing cabinet. You wouldn't have to bolt it to the floor.

True if they KNEW that you kept your firearms in there then they could haul it out, but most wouldn't think to.

The Army stores ammunition in ammo cans in non climate controlled concrete bunkers and they don’t seem to have any problem with degradation.

Going back to the apartment thing, first I can’t imagine a building so cheaply built that it couldn’t support a 400 pound load. I can imagine what kind of cast iron ***** it would be to get that 400 pound load to the third floor though.

Even so I’d say your biggest threat would come from a sticky fingered maintenance man or a contractor rather than a break in and for that even an RSC would probably mitigate the risk. It would certainly provide more security that you have now

First I keep all my guns loaded in my safe with all the extra mags loaded in the gun case I use for that gun and extra ammo in a padlocked box

My long guns are in a gun safe, some loaded, along with some loaded magazines. My ammo is kept in a padlocked cabinet adjacent the gun safe. My CCW is on my belt or in the cipher locked pistol safe next to my bed (along with my HD handgun and other CCW's). The keys to all such enclosures are on the same key ring, always on my person during waking hours and next to my HD gun in the bedside pistol safe at night. A handgun, and the means to quickly reach and access a carbine, shotgun, or scoped rifle are always within arms reach.

I, uhh... err, have a closet for my ammo. Yes, you read that right... they don't make gun safes big enough to hold my ammo. Most of it is in a can of some sort, I have spam cans of Soviet calibers and a sh!t load of .30cal cans with everything else. It's all labeled, usually with a bit of masking tape and a sharpie. My various mags are loaded and spread between vests, pouches, bandoleers, packs and/or other LBE. Some of it is with various weapons in various places about my property, I also have some in the garage where I do my reloading. So, go anywhere in my home and you're bound to find some ammo... :biggrin:

Too much ammo to have one place to store it all, locks will only keep honest people honest. So if you can deter them from getting in you won the battle with the amateurs, with the professionals who are determined you will only slow them down a little and if they have to hunt for it you will slow them down even more. Time is not on their side and they are aware of this fact, they want to get in and get out in the shortest time possible and get as much as they can in the process.

With that in mind I have appliances in my basement that appear to be out of service that contain ammo. A freezer with a cargo strap holding door closed (Ohio requires unused refrigeration units be secured from child access) the ratchet mechanism is rusted and pinned so you can't just open it up, it is plugged in but that operates a dehumidifier rod. There is a gas range with the racks set to hold different levels for storage (gas is disconcerted for safety). There is a commercial milk cooler with cases up the back wall and scads of plastic containers on the shelves in front of them.

No system is perfect and most people don't think it will ever happen to their house. But hey, I am the guy who drives around in a Jeep Wrangler with no top no doors with scads of stuff in it for my off-roading. At some point you have to trust your instincts and let someone else worry about the rest of the crap.

This is a very good problem to have!
