To me whether this man was innocent is a moot point, he was never given a chance to prove it.

With everything we know at this point, no time was given to him to respond appropriately to commands given by the police (if they actually did give any legal commands). A little like the driver shot by the trooper for actually doing what the trooper told him to do, over reacting to a situation that they really had no knowledge about, other than an over reacting citizen to a seemingly innocent encounter calling 911 and going all hyperbole about what they were seeing as witnessed by the security videos.

These types of encounters are occurring all too often and is of great concern for any law abiding gun owners in what appears is a growing police state agenda by all levels of government. It is a little like playing Russian Roulette any time you have to have an encounter with a LEO, you know. It reminds me of what Forrest Gump says in the movie "life is like a box of chocolates you never know what your going to get", interactions with LEO's are a little like that statement. You don't know what your going to get the good, bad, indifferent, vengeful, or ugly. They also say life is a crap shoot, here is hoping none of us roll snake eyes.

Was he innocent, don't know. But can we find the cops guilty, this I think would be a better pursuit of time and energy. Those are the actions necessary to bring justice to law abiding citizens, period.

This definitely sounds like an over reaction by the BC PD. It should not matter what the caller said to 911. The responding officers are supposed to evaluate every situation themselves and determine what is what.

The guy that called it in was a former Marine. I find it a little hard to believe that he couldn't identify a toy gun and even harder to believe it scared him so bad. Lots of things don't add up unless it's to conclude it was a coverup.

It was the same model , but it was the black version.

I have had a change of heart since first posting on the story though, because I've since seen the security footage synchronized with the 911 call from Ronald Ritchie and a couple of significant points come to light:

1) Ritchie lied throughout the 911 call stating that Crawford was trying to load the weapon and that he was pointing it at people. At one point he said, "He just pointed it at two children." Neither loading attempts nor pointing at anyone ever happened as the security footage clearly shows, but that was the information cops had when they got there.

2) The cops took Ritchie's word for everything and came in with guns a' blazin'. The cops are out of frame in the video I saw, and it's possible that verbal contact was made a few seconds before they can be heard on that soundtrack, but from the first voice being heard on the video to them opening fire was maybe a second, very nearly simultaneously.

I'd say that Ritchie should be prosecuted for something depending on available statutes concerning false reporting etc., but the responsibility for the death lies squarely on the two trigger-happy, no-identifying-their-target cops.

Unfortunately, the grand jury declined to hand down an indictment, and of course the CoP and union stand 100% behind their trigger-happy officers. The end. Link Removed

Normally I would post a link to the video to which I'm alluding, but I don't recall where I first saw it (it was some weeks back), and the only sources I can find in a quick search are from democracynow and thinkprogress. Apparently only leftist websites are willing to report the truth about government-sponsored unjustifiable homicides these days, and I have no intention of driving hits to their websites or YouTube channels, but the video is out there and not that hard to find if one can stomach the hosts.
