I can see how someone open carrying can present a great target for a BG if the BG gets the jump on him.
OK, let's look at the above statement...
Why does someone resort to crime?
When I was younger, the kids in my area did crime with a specific goal in mind...
To get stuff without having to work for it or even pay for it.
Most criminals aren't very "productive". That is part of the allure of crime.
Why spend all that time and aggravation working for something when you can just "take it"?
Now as far as OC goes, I tend to believe that most crooks are either lazy or not too bright (or quite possibly both!).
So, unless they are rather higher up in the criminal enterprise of their choice, I don't believe that too many criminals are willing to attempt to rob one of an openly carried weapon, especially when the potential payoff could quite possibly be their death?
I have no numbers or cites to present, just my personal opinion.
It is based on my growing up on the wrong side of the tracks.
I had to live with criminals living throughout my neighborhood with fairly constant assaults on my person and property.
All above aside though, lower level crooks take enough risk selling drugs, banging and robbing when they can.
The crooks I knew, while crafty, we're not willing to risk that much in an attempt to steal your pistol.
While the payoff for the criminal, once a gun is obtained, may be financially good, the potential risk to reward does not justify the attempt.
"Ya can't sell a stolen gun if you get killed trying to steal it!".
I open carry, a lot.
I am aware of my surroundings and I am aware of who and what is around me.
To open carry, situational awareness is essential.
Most people get robbed because they present themselves to the world as oblivious, Soft targets so to speak.
Head down, or worse, their face stuck to the screen of their smartphones and iPods..
While I am sure that open carriers may have been targeted, the incredibly minute number of actual Incidents is probably very minor.
Do I fear for my security while I open carry?
No.
I am aware of the fact that I am armed and my handgun is exposed.
I use a retention holster and I am aware of my surroundings as well.
In the long run, carry what you can and practice often.
Just be aware. You are not the only one out and about.
