What's in your range bag

Contents of my range bag:

- Electronic muffs
- extra insert ear protection in case others are around without it
- extra mags
- plenty of ammunition
- At least two sharpies (if you put a slash through the hole you made in the target with a sharpie, you can reuse the target and know where the new holes are)
- Staple gun in case I'm at a range where I have to staple my target
- Spring loaded clothes pins (in case I'm at the range where they have plastic mesh to clamp your target to)
- targets (lately they've been white paper plates.. buy the generic ones they are cheaper)
- a brimmed ball cap (to keep casings from flying into your face) -- -lately this is an extra and I wear my Boonie hat
- extra firearms that I want to practice with that are not holstered to my belt
- moleskin (in case I feel like the firearm is going to start rubbing a blister on me)
- bandaids
- medical adhesive tape
- quick clot
- a handy knife sharpener (a small handheld one with coarse on one side and fine on the other) This isn't necessary, but if I find I'm standing around I might trim my fingernails with my knife, and it's good to have it sharp.

This is my bare minimum when I go to the range.

Also, don't go out and buy a "range" bag from a shooter's store. Get a duffle bag and save some money. I know one guy that uses a canvas tool bag with lots of pockets. No one ever suspects its a range bag. This is good in case you leave your bag in your car and have to stop somewhere.

I don't have eye protection because I wear glasses. You do want to make sure a hot casing does not hit you in the eye.

your only error is thinking that we all live in "your world". the reality is that we all don't shoot at tidy indoor ranges with electric cabled target retrieval. For example I use a home PVC target stand that I use fishing line a clips to hold cardboard backing that I staple my targets onto and I have to walk down range in order to change the paper

I would actually prefer the ability to shoot like that. To me it's more real world. The natural distractions, without a bunch of people watching and the excessive noise. It is just my experience is limited for now.

Just for the Hell of it I'm going to throw this out if you ever get to an out door range.

First rule is I never go to a public range alone. There is always someone with me that I trust.

One person changes targets one person provides overwatch.

Never go down range unarmed I don’t give a damn what the range rules are; even if it’s a J frame in your pocket do not go down range unarmed

Someone at the range gives you the Heebie Jeebies leave. Right now. Don’t worry about your targets pack up your stuff and go.

Never have all your guns unloaded at the same time.

People have been murdered for their guns at ranges

interesting comments

I would never go to ANY range without a partner.
ranges themselves rarely see gun thefts but in the more crime infested places the parking areas for ranges can be the danger zone for being attacked for your guns.
I suppose that I am lucky that the ranges where I do 98% of my shooting are outdoor private clubs with multiple locked access gates and we can park within our shooting bays. as for odd people, maybe at public ranges you'd have to deal with that however most public ranges have RSOs and if someone is acting inappropriately I would have an RSO deal with it.

I had not thought about that, but should have. The primary range for me is great inside, but the area is dark and notorious. I think I best find a local friend for shooting.

Thanks for the info Eidolon and apvbguy

As I was putting together my range bag last night, I remembered many of you said you brought multiple guns.

How do you protect the guns?
I can't believe they are just thrown in the bag to bounce around.

there are cases you can get to protect your guns in transport. there is nothing stopping you from bringing multiple bags to the range

I have a pelican case that has DIY foam inserts that you can "Pick ‘N Pluck" to fit whatever you are putting in there. The foam is pre-perforated in 1/2" squares.
Knowing what I know now, if you aren't transporting the gun through hostile environments, the foam inserts are all you need, and instead of the expensive case you can use any kind of sturdy case (i.e. tackle box, cooler, ammo can etc.)

Everything but the kitchen sink. Range bag has multiple places for guns, ammo, targets, hearing protections, hat, bag for the rifle rest. water, anti vibration gloves, shoulder pad, flashlight, tools, first aid supplies. You'll understand the need for the shoulder pad if you fire rifles with steel butt plates.

Don't have much of a choice, myself. Have nobody to go with! I do, however, have two holsters on my belt, so I always have something on me that's loaded. I'm at a pretty small range that not many people have heard of, and I go in the middle of the day when everyone else is at work, so that helps.

There was prominent member of another gun forum that was murdered at his range (out in the middle of nowhere) it is assumed he was murdered for his guns as opposed to just being killed and the guns stolen as a crime of opportunity

That insane mentality is what finally convinced me to get involved with firearms and protection of my family. I can usually understand and reason with normal (if normal really exists), but how do you reason with insane? Besides using a hollow point.

one morning a member of one of my clubs was found dead on the range, the official story is accidental self inflicted shooting resulting in his bleeding out. if he had a shooting buddy he might have survived or if it wasn't self inflicted a second person could have deterred an attack J/S

I believe it. Right now, though, my choices are go to the range alone or don't go at all. Besides safety, it's not much fun to go by yourself, either. At least my husband will go with me when he gets back.

Your firearms came in a hard plastic case, right? If not, for about $5-$10 you can get one. Put your firearm in the case and toss the case in the bag.

There are three that are between $7 and $10. You should be able to pick these up at any local gun shop on the cheap as well.

My guns aren’t for looking at they’re tools I don’t normally take more that 3 to the range at a time (plus the one in my pocket) but I just put them in holsters and put the holster in the range bag. I also have at least one of them loaded in the bag

This is the best range bag I have ever owned.
In it I carry 4 sets of electronic ear muffs, 4 sets of eye protection, leather man tool, targets, 10 magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammo, binoculars, pens, notebook, oil, microfiber cloths, water bottle, 4 padded gun mats, 2 to 4 hand guns. Generally I have to use the shoulder strap to carry it in, not so bad on the way out.
This bag is big and strong.
