What's in your range bag

OK, another newbie question.

I'm picturing a cool leather carry bag for the handgun in case (unloaded), ammo, eye and ear protection and notebook.

But I thought I read somewhere that you can not transport the gun and ammo together?

I saw in one range orientation video that a guy carried in his gun in a locked case, the ammo in a locked steel ammo safe, and his other gear all separate. Looked like overkill

Does anything have to be locked?

What else would be a good thing to have in the bag?

Right now all I have is a green nylon overnight bag to carry everything, so I am obviously planning ahead.

I have 2 Voodoo Tactical bags. They each carry a couple of guns, several boxes of ammo, eyes and ears, a small tool kit, stapler for targets, spare mags and a rag. They are fantastic. Paid $39 each and I've not seen anything I like better.

All the above and learned a few new things I should bring. One I will add is a hi lighter of different colors. Helps to mark the holes and keep track of which ammo I used. Saves on targets.

Masking tape for the holes, if target is repairable.

Have a BlackHawk range bag that is crammed with multiple of everything I need (3 calibers) for solo or shared lane shooting.

Just got a free 6 month membership, and 6 buck lane rental at my favorite indoor range, 12 bucks shared. Free targets.

Two bucks off a box for range ammo too, but usually buy in bulk, so it's not as good a deal for me.

Life is good.

I suppose I should qualify all the above that it cost me an SA XDm 9mm 4.5, in case anyone was wondering...

What's in your range bag?

OUTDOOR RANGE (http://phashoots.net/)
2 x pairs of safety glasses, 2 x pair Mickey Mouse ears as well as ear plugs. Hand stapler, tack stapler spare staples and a roll of bailing wire. Numerous empty mags as well as a few fully loaded. Badges for our club, paper towels and a spare holster or two. Probably doesn't cover it all but close. Usually bring a few targets rolled up in a tube but not necessarily in the range bag. Water and boxes of ammo follows. Hell, sometimes fried chicken if we're going to make a day of it. Nothing like the taste of fried chicken at the range. (we add fresh fruit in the summer) great BBQ down the road but usually stop by after our days training and fun.

Fried Chicken, BBQ, Fresh Fruit? Man, let me know where you shoot.

Now I really wish I had someone to shoot with..!

don't forget something to drink, especially those of us in the warmer climates, it can get real hot out there

My range bag is heavy canvas with lots of pockets and locking zippers. Yes, you should lock it. In addition to all the things listed by others, I carry a bottle of water, small box of wet-wipes, toilet paper (I normally shoot at a BLM outdoor range and sometimes TP is missing from the vault toilet), bandaids, ibuprofen, emery board (I am a girl), and a hat. Sometimes I through in a snack.
Don't get too fancy with your bag, it will see some rough use. Leather gets pretty beat up. Make sure it has strong zippers. Most of all have fun.

As I was putting together my range bag last night, I remembered many of you said you brought multiple guns.

How do you protect the guns?
I can't believe they are just thrown in the bag to bounce around.

I actually have two bags. One for the ammo/mags/eyes and ears/ loaders. the other for the guns. Both are Bagmaster and have held up for 16 years without any problems.

The bag for the guns will hold 7 guns. I put each in a padded pouch made for different sized firearms. Without the pouches, I could cram 12-15 guns in there, but they would get beat up in no time. All my guns show little to no wear since I take really good care of them. Bagmaster stuff is pricey but it's a one time purchase with a lifetime guarantee. Link Removed PM me is you have any other questions.

I carry pre-loaded mags, ammo, ear protection, eye protection and two pistols for use that day, and they are in a leather camera case that is about 40 years old.
