Wow do we really look like that from the outside?

It pretty much all has to do with where you live. Out here in the sticks where I live there aren't any muggers. Predators here have 4 legs. Wolves, mountain lions, coyotes and bears. I usually put a loaded pistol on the dashboard of my pickup and the reason for doing so is if a deer runs right in front of the truck but the impact doesn't kill it, I can then put it down. If we lived in a city/town where there was high crime, I would carry concealed because i would also be concerned for safety of myself and my family. I always carry when out riding in the mountains. The Idaho tourist board even strongly recommends that people going into the mountains for hiking even carry a gun.

This is a good reason for carrying. I hate to see an animal suffer after a vehicle hits it and it doesn't die immediately. Might I suggest that you get some sort of retention device for holding your pistol, or at least keep it in the glove compartment? The reason for my suggestion is that in an accident that firearm could be flying anywhere within the cabin of your truck. It certainly won't stay on the dashboard. I don't know about you, but I certainly wouldn't want to be hit by a flying firearm within the cabin of my truck while hitting a deer with my truck. (or at any time.. that just sounds painful)

The other thing of concern is if while getting flown around, if something should catch the trigger (slight possibility, yes, but a possibility none the less) now you have a round going off during the crash.

I hope these suggestions help.

But then you would have to give up all those freedoms in New York State that you keep telling us that you have!

Misspelling whiners like you did...
I just had a conversation with me state senator along those lines. I went to renew my family health plan. They initially said it was increasing by 50%. When I asked the new premium they said we can't quote it until March 2014 because NYS hasn't approved our plans yet. And if I don't like the premium it will be too late to change policies. I asked the good Senator to get his foot off our throats so we an enjoy our lies. While I was at it I bitched about property tax. We're now among the highest in the country. Since retiring I find this is very costly. never noticed much when I worked. We have some property in Western NC. I'm thinking real hard about it right now.

Dude, if you'd just listen to me, I could make your life right as rain! I told you to do that back in February.

Man, if you're buying in NC anyway, get yourself a decent retreat where you won't have to worry near as much about state government anyway, taking your guns or making you register ammo and stuff. C'mon down and set a spell. Become a Southern swinger....sittin' on your porch swing sippin' mint juleps, lookin' out over your antebellum farm. You can be nostalgic and melancholy while living a little more free just as easy as you can in that leftist, traitorous state you live in now. Miss home and your former business while fishin' from your own pond, or huntin' on your own property.

NC ain't the freest state in the South, but it's a heckuva lot freer than NY. I looked on the map to see the area you said you were buying in, and man, that was some beautiful property. You could go for weeks without ever seeing a cop or feeling the need to crank on your politicians about how your freedom is being stifled. You did your time in the rat-race. You done good at it too. You should reward yourself with as much freedom as you can get. Make the move man, make the move. An added benefit to you leaving NY is that you will contribute to starving the beast that it has become. It's not only a good thing to do for yourself personally, it's the right thing to do to stop contributing your tax dollars to one of the most freedom-sucking governments in the Union. C'mon down and set a spell.

Yeah it is. Its near Hendersonville. I've only been there once when we chipped-in for it. I'm going down in January to get a better look.

You couldn't be more right if you tried. After living in New York State for 63 years, I can attest to the "frog in boiling water" scenario. You don't realize how stressful a place like that can be (for some people). A couple months ago I watched that state disappear for the last time in my rear view mirror, and I hate to sound like a little girl, but the relief was so intense I got a little choked up. Granted, it was a hard thing to do, selling multiple properties (totaling over 140 acres in the Southern-tier of western NY) plus my residence. The entire process took almost 2 years, but it was probably 40 years overdue ! All I can say is I don't remember feeling this good since I was a teenager.

Here's a quote from one of my posts last summer : "but I'll be damned if I'm going to keep feeding this insanity with my hard earned retirement finances. Thanks a lot New York State !!! This from a guy who has always worked hard and put 2 kids through NYS Universities on his own dime, obeyed all your laws, paid all your stinkin' exorbitant fees, taxes, etc. And how am I repaid for my loyalty ?"

I went on to rant about the gun laws, taxes, etc. Like I said, I know plenty of people who seem comfortable in that environment, but I think about 15 - 20 years ago I was no longer one of them.

I prefer CC to OC, just for the peace of mind and the element of surprise if needed. My Wife and I both CC all of the time. The only time my weapon is off my body is to sleep and shower. Otherwise it is securely hidden on my person. OC is fine if that is what You need for your ego, but it does nothing for me. I would much rather have a CC person at my back than several OC around me. Just the way it is in the country!!
I don't really open carry either, but I would never be so arrogant or condescending to assume it has anything to do with ego. I have to wonder if you aren't with the Brady Campaign or some other anti-gun organization, since this is the exact same claim they make against all gun carriers in general, concealed or not. Either that or you're just redefining the meaning of the term hypocrite.

I hear ya. I left NJ after 47 yrs and it will take a funeral to get me back. We moved to SC. It also took us 2 yrs to complete the move because we had our house to sell. We left NJ with no jobs and no prospects of a job. Found work within weeks and have never regretted the move.

As far as OC or CC, here in SC there is no OC. I REALLY wish there was because for me it's all about comfort. I CC everywhere I go, but when I am at home I OC. OC is easier and more comfortable the CC.

And yet a lot (I would say if not most) are relying upon what they believe is the deterrent factor of the "element of surprise". It appears from the posts here that most people who subscribe to the "element of surprise" theory expect that the bad guy will be so overcome with "surprise" at the mere sight of the gun that they will run away and the victim will more than likely not even have to shoot.

I say if the criminal is going to run at the mere sight of a gun, than why would they pick the one guy out of 1,000 who they can see has a gun to attack? And, if the criminal is the type that is going to pick that one guy with the visible gun out of 1,000, then the person relying upon the "element of surprise" is in for a shock - because that same kind of criminal is not going to run when the victim yells, "surprise!" and reaches for a gun. That type of criminal is only going to increase their attack if they detect the victim is reaching for a gun. At least if a criminal attacks me anyway, if they see my gun first, I know what kind of criminal is attacking me and I am not led down the false hope path that some sort of "surprise" is going to scare them off.

I think that is the one of the biggest dangers of relying upon the "element of surprise." I wonder how many people are really prepared for when they reach for the gun and yell, "Surprise!" and the criminal punches them in the nose instead of running away.
The element of surprise has no deterrent factor at all. The only benefit is to put down an aggressive rat with prejudice. Once attacked the perp can be surprised at being shot. I keep thinking about the creeps I've seen growing-up. The ones that will dare you to shoot them. If they're not afraid of each others' guns, I don't believe they're afraid of anyone's.

I understand what you are saying... and I'd like to comment.

Those bad guys who dare you to shoot them are few and far between and do not represent the greater share of bad guys. While open carry won't deter those who dare you to shoot them it can deter that other "greater share of bad guys" and that is a very good thing.

However, as you said, concealed carry deters no one ... and if the bad guy happens to be one of those "dare you to shoot me" bad guys.... it won't make any difference if a person is carrying concealed or openly or even not carrying at all.

But open carry still can deter that other "greater share of bad guys".........

And... to borrow one of the left's talking points...

"If open carry deters just one bad guy from attacking..........."

After all... think of my children and grand children who get to keep their Dad and Grampa around because I wasn't attacked!!!

I agree with Gatherer, where is the 'dislike'

OK, sorry I didn't write it at the grade school level. It's called hyperbole.

To imply that one carries openly for ego is to impart a motive for which the poster has no evidence. To show the absurdity of it I used hyperbole to make the statement that one must prefer concealed so that he could sneak into the playground. Then to clarify that was the point I was making, I added, "Makes about as much sense." Neither contention is true (ego or touching) and both are equally absurd.

The mere fact that I had to explain it causes me to wonder if some would be better off using some of their gun money to further their education.

Welcome to the club. I use absurdity to illustrate absurdity as a literary tool quite often, and almost always end up having to explain it as such to somebody.

I almost posted last night to answer the posts you responded to here. Figured it was yours to answer or not as you saw fit though. Glad you saw fit and didn't continue to use hyperbole to make your point(s), because your wondering about the better use of gun money was so-obviously not hyperbole. LOL

Oh,OK...Me gets it now. Sorry. Guess I'll just have to turn in my firearms and get that 6th grade 'edgeecation' ! Thanks for the advise professor.

Now you're probably gonna have to explain what hyperbole is. It's like an endless can of worms sometimes. Just ask Blues.

The "little boys in the playground " was a poor choice of words to say the least. And those who agree with that kind of hyperbull got a screw loose. I don't care what ya call it or meant by it. It's still 'hyperbull'. In some circles making comments like that can lead to one's posterior in some deep doo-doo.

Bikenut - could not have said it better! I like the idea of deterring the attack before it happens as opposed to defending myself during the attack.

Only if you travel in circles governed by political correctness and symbolism over substance. It isn't your fault if someone misinterprets something you say, nor should it be. If you intend to go around claiming offense at misinterpreted remarks on the internet then you might as well unplug your computer. Internet posts don't have the benefit of voice tone, inflection, facial expression, body language or any other method we use to glean context and meaning from the statements of others. As a result, misunderstandings are not only normal on the internet, they're expected. That's why most people here asked for explanation instead of simply assuming the worst and taking offense like you did. Apparently they've been around internet forums longer than you.
