Canton police officer who threatened to execute concealed carry licensee.........

According to the Buckeye Firearms Association, Daniel Harless was fired over the objections and financial support of both his union and his fellow officers within the Canton, OH PD.

That article is dated 1/11/2012. I thought I remembered more than just being fired happening to him, but I'm not positive about that. There's a link within the BFA article to a Canton newspaper article from which BFA quotes several troubling aspects of his firing. Anyone concerned about him specifically should read it, and now you have his name to search for more recent articles. He's claiming disability due to PTSD. Not sure what the PTSD is supposed to be from, but I'm pretty sure it's unrelated to the viral video incident.

Me personally, I'm more concerned with, as buckey pointed out, the union's support for the freak-show-cop, and maybe even more troubling is the fact that fellow officers contributed a lot of money to him while he was still on (un?)paid leave, apparently thinking that he would be back in their fold in fairly short order. Only the viral aspect of the video ensured that he didn't have a job to return to. Another case that proves the prudence of videotaping every single encounter you have with cops. You just never know when one is going to go off the rails like Daniel Harless did.

Unfortunately, I don't think anything at all happened to Harless' partner(s) throughout the several instances of similar treatment by Harless and (a) partner that were subsequently uncovered after the first video went viral. I don't recall reading anything about him, and the BFA article doesn't mention him.

Link Removed If he wants his job back, all he has to do is get a medical clearance according to the article.

And I guess the arbitrator saw a different video than we did. Read Link Removed and see if it matches what you saw as far as William Bartlett. Never tried to show the officers his permit? Who chopped off the video where he is trying to say he has one. It is right at 15 seconds on the tape. " I have a permit". Then Harless asks why he keeps trying to show him the permit once he is out of the car. So Harless knew he was trying to do what the stupid Ohio law requires. Any state that demands that the first thing you have to do is say you have a gun is wrong.

Granted cops that have issues with citizens being armed exist everywhere, but it sure seems like Ohio has significantly more of these rogue cops that harass legally armed citizens.

It is more of a problem where a permit or license holder has to tell the LEO right off the bat and if you can't get a word in edgewise, they go after the permittee. States that are must tell if asked are less likely to have that problem as they are trained to think everyone is armed and to approach accordingly.

I live just 26 miles south of Canton and refuse to enter the city limits unless I have no other choice. Not because of the possibility of Harless possibly being on the force but because of the fact that he received no disciplinary action for this bad conduct that got him suspended in the first place.

ON DISABILITY
Harless remains on disability after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. His attorneys say he is unlikely to return to his job. The city argues that Graham placed no limits on when Harless can be reinstated and not only reversed his firing, but prohibited him from receiving any discipline at all.
Kristen Bates Aylward, deputy chief counsel for the Canton Law Department, wrote in the appeal that Graham exceeded his power.
“There are many concerns in that decision,” she said Wednesday. “Certainly, he could return. There is a whole plethora that cause my clients’ concerns.”
Bates Aylward declined to discuss the city’s specific concerns. She said that the city and Harless’ attorneys have been unable to reach a settlement.
“Settlement talks have not been successful to date, but that doesn’t mean some day they can’t be,” she said.
Michael Piotrowski, staff attorney for the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, did not immediately return calls for comment.

His being on compensation for PTSD and his decision to sue Canton for standard compensation hearing practices tell me he is just looking for a great payday and will be more concerned with that than getting back to work. He is another with his hand out for a hand out.
