You just have to evaluate the situation in the moment. If someone is a few feet away from you with a knife, by all means shoot them as you're backing up and yelling at them to drop the weapon. If they are inches away with that knife, let them take your wallet or purse and draw as they are retreating if you think you can do so safely. Just be careful not to shoot them in the back as they are fleeing. If they already have a gun pointed at you, don't even bother. A trigger pull takes a lot less time than a draw, no matter what you are drawing or from where. Keep in mind that if you carry in a purse, if you have to hand over your purse you are also handing over your gun. Any reaching in to a purse or pocket is going to be seen as a potential threat if you carry a purse, because they already know what they want is in there. One of the benefits to not having a purse is looking like you are going for your wallet might buy you an extra couple of seconds to draw. I always used to carry my wallet in my front pocket, but switched to my back pocket so that it is right by my gun. I always have the option to go for either.
