What to do in a mugging situation?

We are getting ready to go visit New Orleans where I am a little nervous about being safe. Of course we will avoid side streets and being out at night or in dangerous areas. I know this is a tough question to answer, different scenarios, and I know not to draw my gun unless I think my life is in imminent danger.

So saying that, what if we are walking down the street and one or more people come up to us and demand our wallets? What if they are armed? unarmed? Would you hand over your wallet and hope they did not then decide to harm you? Anyone with experience want to share?

My gut instinct would be to say no if they did not appear to be armed, but if they had a weapon on me I would hand it over and hope for an opening to get away or defend myself. Also not to be without compassion but I do not like beggars to get in close to my face and block me, would you carry pepper spray in case they would not back off?

Yes, I am new to conceal carry, but I would like to have some plan in mind in case something happened.

Put your gun in there face if someone is robbing you , they don't stop shoot them in the face . That ends that . Why hand over your wallet for ?

Situational awareness is always the first principle of self defense.

Don't let anyone get near you in the first place.

Cross and re-cross streets to get away and stay away from suspicious looking others.

If even then someone else persists in getting close to me, by following me, I will stop, with my back protected against a building wall, and face them, glare at them, and wait for them to pass.

For women and youth however I would advise just keep walking fast.

But for me, I wanted to get it over with without being sneaked up on.

Never let them come within arms reach, so shuffle out of the way if they stop too close. That will be your first clue that a confrontation is imminent.

My hand will already be on my weapon at this point.

If they make a demand, normally I will say "get lost."

Once I had a guy say to me "oh are you a cop?"

I replied "I'm worse than a cop -- I'm your worst nightmare."

Borrowed that line from Stallone. Usually I prefer Eastwood lines instead, like "yah right, make my day."

He took the warning to heart and got lost. I would have shot him if he didn't.

No one else has ever been stupid enough to stop, after I stop and face them.

In your case I would recommend a really big baggy purse with a long shoulder strap, and keep your gun in that, so that you can carry the purse across your shoulder and chest.

Then reach into the purse and hold the gun if you feel in danger.

Practice drawing it and pulling the trigger (with snapping caps in it) in front of the mirror to develop your technique and create muscle memory.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. But,
NOBODY can answer this question for you. (There are just way to many variables to consider!)

Remember the number one rule for SD is "AVOIDANCE". (So, your thinking is on the right track.)

There are a couple of things you may be able to do to avoid being victimized. A couple that come to mind are:

ALWAYS travel in a GROUP! (Never, be caught anywhere by yourself.)

Another one is-

Do NOT get intoxicated!

Drinking even small amounts of alcohol can have a HUGE detrimental affect on mental faculties and your SA. (Not to mention how alcohol can impede your reaction times & physical coordination.)

Criminals actively look for targets who seem impaired in some way shape or form. (This is especially true in known "tourist" destinations.)

REMEMBER!!!
Being impaired is not necessarily limited to drugs or alcohol.

Distractions such as talking on the cell phone, taking pics or vids, rummaging through a purse of shopping bag are all forms of "impairment. Even spending to much window shopping or admiring the beauty of the city can alert any BGs in the area you may be an easy target.

This is where traveling in a group of three or more can be very advantageous. Two of you can enjoy something; while the third looks for potential threats. (Then you can switch out & someone else look for threats.)

Shoobee- I usually carry a very small cross body purse that has the metal cable in it to keep someone from cutting and snatching it. I carry my gun appendix. Do you think a bigger purse might encourage someone to want to take it? Plus if they take my purse then they have my gun. I like the idea of being able to hold my gun if I am in danger, maybe I should pocket carry it?

I agree with your statement other than the quote above. The very last thing in the world you want is for some witness to say I heard the shooter say "make my day." It's a statement against your penal interest.

When approached by a suspicious character one should become vocal and very loud. Get away, drop the weapon, help, etc. ALso, never stand your ground unless the attack has commenced. I don't care what the law says. Attempt to retreat if you can do so safely. You want witnesses to say "she was backing up yelling to get away before she fired."

In NO head on swivel, condition yellow all the time you cannot carry your weapon into bars, stay off side streets, stay on heavy travel major streets (pretty well patroled) Be safe. If outnumbered you will lose, if old enough and don't care take as many of them with you as possible. Question to bad guy, what do you think the good Lord is going to say when you get to the gates of heaven and he finds out you are mugging people?? His answer don't care. Your option, send him.

In NOLA you also have to be aware that the NOPD has a habit of confiscating privately owned firearms whether you have a permit or not. I'm not just talking about Katrina NOPD has been known to pull people over and confiscate their weapon and the owner never gets it back

Pocket carry works better than a purse, sure.

But most women's fashions don't have pockets, so most women tend to carry with their purse.

My advise is if you feel unsafe find a cop or wave a cab or just go in to the nearest shop/bar call the cops tell them your being followed tell them you are armed and most cops will escort you home or at least attend. Most muggers won't hang around but as the others say situational awareness is best.

it's good to think about this kind of thing think about what you would do if.......
prepares us mentally and emotionally to move and act quicker in a real scenario
stay sharp be prepared and have eyes like an eagle
:)

Body carry is always the best option. I would also suggest leaving the purse at home if at all possible.

What if you have to draw and the bad guy runs as soon as he sees the gun?
That presumes one or both of the below:
  1. The robber has blazing fast reflexes.
  2. The citizen hesitates long enough for the robber to react.
If you put ME in immediate fear of life and limb, you've got a VANISHINGLY small window of opportunity to flee or submit. There will be NO warnings or hesitation.

The truth is you'll probably see the muzzle flash before you see the gun.

Anybody who doesn't like that is free to NOT try to rob me.
