Self-Defense Tactics For An Enraged Attacker/The Myth of Stopping Power

Not trying to be a jerk (internet typed words often are easy to misunderstand) .... if you had 15 rounds but needed 17, and that is quite possible considering bad guys travel in packs now a days, you might want to consider carrying more ammo?
Bikenut...the 16th is the one on the pipe. There is no 17th because it doesn't exists in that magazine. Got the picture?

I always bring more ammo... but my spare magazine is already inside my spare gun (BUG) for two reasons....

-Mechanical things screw up at the worst possible time so if my primary gun pukes for any reason I have another one ready to go.

-I'm old.... my reflexes and physical manipulative abilities aren't what they used to be ... and practice at the range has shown me I can draw my back up faster than I can change a magazine... and drawing a back up does not have the chance of screwing up a mag change taking too much time when I won't have any time to waste.

But that's just me...........
I too have a BUG. But it is of a different caliber. So for each of my two guns on me, I have two extra magazines for each of my two guns. My post was a being a smart ass joke. I am trying to settle down the sometimes seriousness of the argument??? OK?? Relax mate! Sorry if you misunderstood.

I knew what you meant Tucker's Mom.... ... no problem there. But quite often my replies not only are intended to speak to whom I quoted... but often some parts are posted with an eye towards other folks who might read it and perhaps consider what was said as food for thought for themselves....

So.... as far as I'm concerned.... we are good. In fact I enjoy reading your posts all through the forum itself.

Excellent article, thanks for posting.

I wanted to do a serious post, but most of them are so silly that at this point in the thread I don't imagine mine will be read by many.

The best point made in the article was made by the WWI vet. Anyone who has taken martial arts by an instructor with a real interest in self-defense will tell you to put out the attacker's eye or break his windpipe. Of course for a cop, those are "save your life" tactics that he shouldn't ever have to use, but as in the story, he might need them.

IMO, it was very obvious that the officer's training was flawed. If you pepper spray someone with no effect, don't waste your time with a baton. The reason that professional pepper spray has a 12 foot stream is to disable someone before they get close to you. Why would you want to get close enough to an attacker who laughed at your pepper spray to poke him with a stick? PULL YOUR DAMN SIDEARM!!! Unless you were planning to put out his eye or break his windpipe with the baton.

I won't bother with the stopping power debate. There have been people stopped by a .22. There have been people not stopped by a .45. I watched a deer run nearly 200 yards after a 30.06 round had made jelly out of his heart.

fstroupe...no matter whether you believe it or not, I have read through all of your post. Most of the time, they are very informative. And you sure know how to relax and engaged yourself in some camaraderies here and there unlike some energy vampires around this forum. You are a nice person, keep it up.

Well said! I also thought the cop made a very fundamental error. If it were me, I would not be concerned about the order the department lawyer said escalation should occur. He or she are sitting in their office and are not the ones fighting for their life. If someone is trying to do me great harm or cause my death, I would be doing everything possible to return the favor in any way I could. We can work out the details of the order I did it in after it is over.
