Self-defense killings skyrocket as law-abiding Detroiters take matters into their own

Ya gotta do whatcha gotta do. Bad position they are in but when left with no choice, arming yourself is the only way.

I feal bad for the former federal agent but he shouldn't have been so blatant and make himself known. Or.....left anybody to ID him:):)

Whether it be Detroit or anywhere else, I've never thought of local police departments as protection from crime.Their major function is to catch criminals, i.e., people who have already committed a crime. That may indirectly prevent some crime, but citizens can't rely on police to prevent crime in general.

I just worry that stories like the one about Detroit will lull people in other places into thinking "I don't have to worry about protecting myself, I live in a low-crime area with good police response."

Well said. I'd only add the ol' adage of "when seconds count, police are only minutes away."

The police are not able to be everywhere, but a response time of 24 minutes is RIDICULOUS. Its probably not the officers fault, I bet they have been riddled with budget cuts over the last decade because their population has dwindled. With less tax dollars coming in, a 40% reduction in officers has them spread too thin.

I'm kind of a black and white kind of guy, facts are facts. When the fact is that the average response time for 911 is 11 minutes nationally -- anyone with half a brain should realize that a home invasion is over usually in much less time than that leaving you to defend yourself and family.

If the numbers keep skyrocketing in Detroit where lawful citizens are blasting the scumbags... I bet the crime rate will drop over the next couple years. Scumbags don't like getting shot.

Bozz: Coupled with that prediction (with which I totally agree with, I might add) is the observation that the very WORST crime rates are found in cities where owning a handgun is the most difficult to accomplish.

Well, GEE WIZ! Who would have thought? (Sarcasm intended. You "getting it" Chicago, NY, DC et al?)

I like the little old lady who said she was going to take one out. It's amazing how thin the veil of security actually is. Detroit should be an example to all of us.

I live in the western suburbs of Detroit. What's going on down there is scary.
The Gov. is just a step away from appointing an Emergency Manager for the city. Cut-backs are everywhere & the Police & 911 response teams are hardest hit, as well as the fire dept.
The crooks know the cops will never get anywhere in time to stop a robbery, etc. So they're on the "WILD".
I carry everywhere I go or at least have a weapon in my car if I have to go to a PFZ.
I do not want to shoot anybody, but if one of those drop-out crackheads comes to do me or my family harm, I will do whatever it takes.
Calling the cops first is not an option,'cause they won't get there in time.

I have a hard time convincing my wife not to fall into that very same trap.

  1. Police have no legal duty to protect individuals.
  2. Police have no legal liability when they fail to protect individuals.
  3. Police have virtually no physical ability to protect individuals.

When your life is in danger right now, if you're not ready and willing to protect YOURSELF, you're just not going to get protected AT ALL. Anybody who tells you different is a liar.

The police don't protect individuals. They draw chalk outlines around individuals who don't protect themselves.

And just to give you an idea of how "effective" 911 is in Detroit, a few years ago a woman was shot by her husband. When the victim called 911 to report the attack, the 911 operator demanded that she put her husband, THE MAN WHO SHOT HER, on the line.

self Defense killings skyrocket

The Ploice show up after a crime has been commited, if you want to be on that side of the Stats dont Arm yourself. It is important to protect yourself and your Family, i dont recomend trying to be a crime stopprer. Protect yourself and your Family, if the Police need to be called, or you have time to call them then thats the way to go. Unfortuneatly, most Bad Guys are not going to give you the Time.

Any threat from which the police can PROTECT you clearly isn't an IMMEDIATE threat.

Anybody who doesn't believe it only needs to find out what the average police response time in their area is. Then they should see how many times they can stab a beef brisket in that amount of time.

911 isn't a matter transporter and the police aren't Doctor Who. They can't keep going back in time until they get there in time to save you.
