Why carry open in town?

Hard to say "Happy Memorial Day", when it is a day to remember those who died for our country. Anyway, I wish the original OP would chime in with his opinion after reading the responses. I hate one post drive byes.

It's a very bittersweet day. I do say "Happy," though... they died so we could be. I try to be happy because they didn't get the chance to. It's the only way I can think of to really honor their sacrifice. That, and try to teach my kid what this day means, without getting him worried about his overseas Daddy. I get it if you disagree... But it's what I can do.

That was the one nice thing about being stationed in DC... getting to visit Arlington for Memorial Day and help with the flowers.

Because it's my God given Civil and Constitutional right. If you don't want to open carry then don't but don't presume to tell me that I can't. I could care less if I "frighten" non gun owners.

Seems to me carrying concealed while walking in town is just being afraid of what people might think and is an invitation to be attacked by bad guys who think you are unarmed.

See how that works? Carry what you want, where you want, the way you want for the reasons you personally consider valid and keep your nose out of how other people carry what they want, where they want, the way they want, for the reasons they personally consider valid.

I live in Arkansas and OC isn't legal. Even if OC was legal 99% of the time I would still CC.

A couple of years ago I was going to the after hours clinic at the VAMC and one of my buddies who is a VA cop was standing outside with 3 other VA cops. One was sitting/leaning against a rail with his back toward the sidewalk where everyone walked by. When standing in the middle of sidewalk I could have easily reached out a grabbed his holstered 9mm Beretta. I pointed this out to him.

VA cop "No one would do that, there's four of us."

Me "The right person would. Here's what he would do........ ( the VA cop was 60ish, about 6' 4" 335lbs. One cop was standing directly in front of him with one to his right and one to his left in a semicircle about 5' away ) first he would grab your gun, and at the same time grab you by the back of you vest and use you as a shield. He or I would shoot the cop there in the head ( the one standing directly in front of him) then still using you as a shield I would shoot him ( pointing to the cop to his left ) in the hip/groin area since he's wearing a vest. You? You're unarmed and not any threat. (then pointing to the cop to my right, Mike, the one I know ) Mike's not a very good shot so he isn't much of a threat either so I would shoot him third. Next I would shoot you ( referring back to the cop that I stole the gun from ) I would shoot you in the back of the head then I would finish off him ( pointing to the cop that I would shoot in the hip/groin area.).

Big old cop " I really think you could do all that?"

Me "Mike?"

Mike ( who I've known for years and have shot numerous IDPA, IPSC and steel plate matches with ) "Yeah, he could."

Back during the "Day" we practiced taking guns away from cops, guards, etc that carried OC.

I practiced this in the military and as a Gov't employee/contractor. Heck, I know people that were in prison that practiced the same thing.

Interesting... I wonder... back in the "Day" did you practice grabbing guns from concealed carriers too? Were you trained in the "tells" that concealed carriers exhibit? I'm just an ordinary old fart untrained in the manly art of grabbing guns from old fat cops and just for fun I look at folks and pick out those who's sidearm prints or their shirt snags for an instant, or their pocket bulges (I said their POCKET bulges... let us not stray into risque remarks about looking for bulges.. OK?), or their pant leg doesn't "flow" properly.

Or are you trying to say that it is only OC'ers who are in danger of a gun grab?

And with all these guys out there, especially those from prison, who are trained and/or practice to snatch guns from OC'ers... why aren't ordinary common folk getting their OC'd guns snatched every day?

Apparently criminals are much smarter than you. They know there are much easier ways to get guns then to take them from the people carrying them. Which is why you won't be able to provide us with real world examples of criminals taking guns from Joe Civilians carrying tham more than about once every couple of years.

People open carry for a lot of reasons and since many people live in cities (and a lot of crime occurs in cities) it would make sense to carry there if you live there.
Like Blues said it can be an advantage if you aren't as fast as you used to be and the more you can deter a crime before happening the better.
Some climates are hot and concealed carry can be much more uncomfortable than open carry.
Or maybe they open carry because like me they find the process to get a concealed weapons permit to be too much like government blackmail. (as I mentioned earlier)
It could also be a traditional expression of honesty. (bandits and robbers being inclined to hide their weapons historically.)
They might be 2nd amendment activists trying to educate the public and create a positive or neutral public image of firearms.
It can also be an obvious "tribal" expression of being part of a group that has a culturally transmitted history of owning and bearing arms.

Thanks ROSES, you hit some of the top reasons i carry open. biggest one though is the deterrent of anyone seeing it will think really hard before attacking me
 
I had a guy show up at my garage sale this week open carrying. I asked him what he was carrying. He told me and I asked if he ever tried to get a CCW permit. He said he had one but just liked to carry open when he could. He asked if I minded him carrying? I said no. He asked if I ever carried a gun. I told him I standing right in front of you with one now. He said oh, he didn't know. I said that was the point. We talked guns a while, then his wife said she was ready to go and he left.

Yes, I forgot the most obvious, OC is a deterrent to many criminals. Probably not all, as there are some brazen and insane criminals out there, but most are going to look for a better target. Both modes of carry have advantages and disadvantages of course. What saddens me is that there are many CCers who HATE on people who open carry and I don't see why this would have a benefit since as a gun community our enemies are manifold and we must not let the opposition succeed with their divide and conquer tactics. The "I'm a gun owner BUT" syndrome..I see it all the time: pistol enthusiasts who cant understand why anyone should own an AK, rifle shooters who think handguns are a problem etc.

well for one thing,it's intimidating to the general population,and also if a bad guy wants to rob a store,and see's that your armed he can easily get the jump on you and take you out as the first threat,nearly immpossible to draw your weapon when the bad guy guy acts on fast impulse,on the other hand,if your in a neighborhood that's a bit shady,i would open carry,in certain situations,other than that i conceal my 44 cal revolver. just common sense,im not out to prove a point by open carrry. but in certain areas i do. i just use common sense,don't want to draw attention to my gun all the time.

It is not intimidating, except to a very small amount of people in the general population and a lot of concealed carriers.

No, open carriers are not targeted first.
