What happens when the special ones carry guns in bars...

In Washington it is only illegal to possess a firearm in that portion of any establishment that is off limits to <21 years of age due to an alcohol license. There is no law in Washington against carrying a firearm in a restaurant or stadium that serves alcohol, actually consuming alcohol while carrying, nor carrying a firearm under the influence. And the big news is....we have no problems any more than any other state with firearms + alcohol problems.

I believe he is also being investigated for 'illegally carrying a gun in a restaurant while consuming alcohol'. Something that's (I believe) unlawful in that state.
Let me correct myself from earlier. He is being investigated for violating their department's policy. While what I cited before is correct for civilians, I did not think about the fact that he was a LEO. They can legally carry a gun into a bar even when off duty. However, their agency obviously had some policy against that. Whether the policy is that you can't carry into a restaurant (or bar) that serves alcohol at all, or whether it is that you can't consume alcohol while in there, I don't know (our department will let us go for just going to a bar in our county. If we're going to drink, they want us going to a different county, and we better never flash our badge). Either way he violated both. But SC law does not prohibit LEOs from carrying in restaurants that serve alcohol. I'm just a reserve deputy in SC and our agency allows us to carry anywhere that a salaried officer can carry in the state of SC when we're off duty. And that includes restaurants that serve alcohol (or bars).

Despicable behavior from one of the "only ones". --> Link Removed

Mr. Canuck, I now have to ask, what action are you suggesting be taken in regards to the LEO exception for carrying firearms in restaurants that serve alcohol?

Kinda what I'm wondering too. In order for me to get a good feel for the situation the officer was in though, I want to see a good detailed report of what the female soldier was doing that the officer felt he must arrest her. The latest article I've seen on WYFF says he was trying to arrest her because he thought she was drunk. If that's the case, he should have had his hands full in just about every bar he came across that night. I'm just very confused as to the whole situation. But that's the news for you, always as vague as possible. What is it Don Henley said, "I just have to look good, I DON'T HAVE TO BE CLEAR. Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry."

I've not suggested any action. I'm making an observation that there exists an atmosphere where one group of individuals have been given so many special perks, and operate in an environment where we have allowed them to become a paramilitary bully squad, that they feel invincible. They feel entitled to exit a bar, in which they are drinking, and re-enter with a gun, badge, and handcuffs to arrest a girl for crying.

ETA: Never mind. I found it.

I was the first response to your post that only gave a blog as citation. The link you refer to wasn't even up yet when I had asked the question. So your question is moot. But thanks for being ever so helpful.

You do realize that I posted the first actual link to your post that wasn't a blog, right?

Note Posts #2 and #4

I'm confused. The link to WISTV.com was in my original blog post. Here is a screen capture of the original raw submission of the blog post on 10/15/2013 at 20:32. I also looked at the archived version of the original posting, and the link to WISTV.com appears there too. Are you saying that at 23:07, you could not see this highlighted link?

It seems that when I clicked on the blog link, I didn't get what you are showing me now in the post. So no, I didn't see that video. All I have been seeing is the article links that mentioned nothing of a gun nor a badge.

I tried twice more and I get nothing from your blog link.

This may be where all the confusion is coming from in this thread.

So what was he trying to detain her for? My guess was that he was trying to hit on her (you know, taking advance of her drunken state), and them when she wasn't biting, he deciding he'd use her drunken state against her.

For a change this thread produced a lot of interesting and varied opinions with a high degree of civility. I may not agree with everyone and obviously the repliers have the same problem, but it certainly cleared the air on this particular incident and the opinions of many.
I live in SC Mr. Canuck and if there is one occasion that I would want to CC at night it is when I am out in a restaurant, which usually serves alcohol. If there is one time during my times being CC that is most important to me it is this occasion. I am usually a glass of water person or maybe a beer so the alcohol does not mean anything to me, but the going and coming from that restaurant to and from my parked car that is on a darkened street or parking garage at say 10PM gets my situational awareness very very active, particularly since I cannot be CC because the restaurant (and this is most restaurants) serves alcohol. I am not a 24/7 CCer and, for all intents and purposes, my CCWP does me very little good (IMO) when its primary purpose is not allowed. The idea that being CC in a "bar", which, in this discussion is really moot--it is a restaurant that serves alcohol---always seems to end up with the anti CC crowd somehow making this out as the next "shootout at the OK corral", which is a ridiculous assumption but plays well with the anti CC crowd and particularly the press, where "bleeds it leads" and anything to hype a story is the bottom line.

You hit on probably the most important thing about this law right there. This is something I've been trying to drive home with senators during this S308 debate. The fact that SC requires me to take pretty much an entire weekend, and half a part time student's paycheck just to be able to qualify to ask their permission to take advantage of what should be an inalienable and God given right, protected by the 2nd Amendment, is just absolutely outrageous. But then when I jump through all those hoops to obtain my permit so that I am now able to protect myself and my family, what's the one place that most families go together outside of the home? Restaurants (almost all of which serve alcohol). And they're going to tell me that's one of the places that I'm off limits in carrying? No sir South Carolina, I've got the 14th amendment backing me up. Your laws don't mean jack!

Strange. I just checked the link in the OP, and it takes me to my website. Where does it take you?

I can't argue with you. I'm putting in as much time as I have available to get restaurant carry passed. In January, we will need to turn up the heat again to make it happen. I'm glad we can count on you to write emails and make phone calls.

The term "bar" was used in the title of the thread because it was used in the story that I blogged about. I think we all know it's used incorrectly by the media.

I get a page that says "South Carolina Gun Blog" in black letters on a blue background. Below that the entire page is on a white background, and in red letters it says "Guns Save Lives", there is an advertisement for | Fully Informed Jury Association and that is all. This was one of my main points as to "only producing a blog", I couldn't understand why you kept pointing to a site that had no information on it. Apparently, there is something blocking me from seeing what is on that blog.

Being that it is a SC blog and I'm just north of the Mason-Dixon might have something to do with it. :sarcastic:

Keep up the good fight on that one. OH just recently got rid of theirs. It's a bad law (I use the term loosely) and needs to be rescinded.

We all gotta do what we gotta do, but your last statement sounds like you do not care about the limits of the law. If you believe in the "what ifs" and one happens to you and you defend yourself and you injure or kill someone--I guarantee you that you WILL care about the limits of the law--either in jail or either in depleting your personal resources in a costly civil suit.

In that "what if" situation, what is the alternative? My funeral? My wife or child's funeral? You just described a scenario of "what if you're carrying somewhere you're not supposed to and you need your gun just as you would in those places you are allowed to carry?" Which brings me back to what I've always said...if I don't think the law really has the ability or the intention to keep me safe, I'm going to do whatever I gotta do to protect myself and my family.

I see the libtard quotes on that page. I generally use Chrome, but have Firefox and Explorer (when absolutely necessary). Your original blog link did not work on either of them. *shrugs*
