Unsafe Mosin Nagant Practice.

In an earlier thread, someone posted that, instead of using the (very difficult to use) safety, he "decocks" the gun by holding on to the cocking piece while pulling the trigger and gently allowing the cocking piece down.

This is very unsafe. This allows the firing pin, under spring pressure, to rest against the primer of the chambered round. Any jarring or movement of the gun can cause it to fire. This is less safe than not using the safety at all.

Very very stupid, do you have a link to the thread?

That is not the correct way to decock the rifle, You can decock the bolt by closing and pushing it gently down until it clicks and rests at about a 75 degree angle, then pulling the trigger. DO NOT PUSH THE BOLT ALL THE WAY DOWN, closing the bolt cocks the weapon.

To use the safety, without a round chambered, you can cock the bolt and then pull back on the cocking piece and turn the cocking piece to the left so that the top piece catches the left side of the reciever. You wont be able to move the bolt at all. Use the decocker while carrying the gun, use the damn safety while stowing it.
