The Best all round handgun

I have 2 Glock myself. The 23 and a 27 Gen 4. They're both great handguns for self-defense. I just prefer the .40 caliber over the 9mm. It has a lot more stopping power and creates a bigger wound channel than the 9mm. Not to say the 9mm is a bad round, because it is a decent round.

I really agree with Big boss. The best all around handgun is what's the best for you ? It's like asking what's the best all around car ? Everybody has different criteria for answering that for themselves. So it's the same with handguns. I like Glock's and I like the .40 S&W caliber. Someone else might like the .45 acp and another might like the .357 sig. Being proficient with you sidearm is what determines your best all around handgun for you.

I don't own anything I wouldn't carry, or don't trust to do the job, so it's hard to say. What I choose depends on the weather, where I plan to go, and comfort. It could be anything from a Bersa .380, to a Springer 1911A1 .45. Most often, it's a Stoeger Cougar 9 IWB in a UBG Canute, or a SP101 .38+P in a paddle holster.

Since I am a 1911 fan, and every one I have had or seen. There was something I did not like about it.
So I am gonna build my own 1911 gov.
Using a caspian damascas slide and titainium frame, guts by Wilson combat.
I will make it more for reliability than match grade target. Since it will be a EDC.

Stoeger Cougar is a very good weapon, made well for a moderate price. For me the Bersa Thunder .380 and Thunder .32 are the two guns I depend on for carry and home. See no reason not to trust them.

What do you guys think of the Ruger LC9 with a laser sight? I'm interested in this pistol and wanted to get a few thoughts.

Thanks.

Lc9 is a fine pocket gun
Personally the laser I would remove
Lasers are IMHO a gimmick and the one on the lc9 is too easily turned on in your pocket.

Look at the doubletap pistol, nice and simple. The same size as the lc9

The LC9 with a laser is good. I do like .40 cal better but a 9mm is good. Ruger is getting better. If you got it you'd have a decent gun. If you tried a Glock and didn't like it, then go with what you feel will work best for you. Laser sights are good to have. You just need a proper holster for your gun when a laser is attached. As long as you got that, your good.

Another question - what holster would you recommend for the LC9? The guy at the store tells me that he thinks a pocket holster won't work because most people don't have big enough pockets.

Thanks.

Have 17 handguns - favorites are my Berettas - M9, PX4 full size and PX4 subcompact, Colt Combat Commander, and Sig P226 Mark 25 Navy, Sig P238 and Sig P938. All flawless out of the box and still working perfectly. All the others, the Kel-Tecs, Glocks, Springers, have been nightmares of FTE, BTF, FTF....enough to drive a man back to revolvers...With them, favorite is my old LEO service revolver S&W .38Sp military and police and my S&W Governor

What I've learned and what I like:

(1) The "best" handgun for self defense is the one you train with to become deadly accurate with at ranges from 10 to 30 feet away.

(2) The "best" handgun for self defense is the one you are going to carry.

(3) I prefer the Glock platform for SD, and here is why

- chamber a round and the Glock is "always on"
- no safety to remember to disengage or engage
- same trigger pull every single time
- Accurate and reliable
- higher capacity

I do not like SIGs due the lack of an external safety requiring you to use two trigger pulls moving from DA to SA. I do not like where SIG places the slide release. It causes me to adopt a grip that is not intuitive for me. I have to keep my right thumb out of the way and put it on my hand, instead of on the pistol.

If I use a DA/SA pistol, I prefer those with external safety that allows me to carry "cocked and locked" (HK and FN come to mind).

I like my Berettas, but the safety operation is opposite of every other handgun I use, "safety goes down to engage it, safety goes up to disengage."

It really comes down to what you finally find works BEST for YOU.

So, try as many handguns out as you can.
