The 10 Safest States For Drivers

The statistics may surprise you. Did your state make the top 10?

Here are the results.

From the long stretches of North Dakota highway to the rotaries of Massachusetts, Americans log nearly 3 trillion driving miles each year — enough to travel to the sun and back over 15,000 times! We drive a lot, and the more we drive, the greater our risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. A staggering 5.6 million motor vehicle crashes were reported in 2012 alone — 30,800 of those being fatal.

#1 is Massachusetts. They have to be #1 in something!
#50 is North Dakota . Those long stretches are a killer.

Googling safest states to drive in...I can find 5 different lists in 5 different links...

From my experience, CA, WA, UT are terrible states to drive in. OR and ID are not only safer but much nicer drivers.

This list has two major flaws. First, I don't think a large state with a few big cities and lots of smaller cities and towns can produce a meaningful statewide statistic. I live in Houston, and I'll guarantee it's more dangerous to drive here than in, say, Beeville or Rockport. Second, the list is based on the number of licensed drivers, not miles driven. The northeastern states where so much commuting is by public transportation may have many "drivers" but not nearly as many miles per driver as Los Angeles or Dallas or Denver. Let me see a table of fatalities per 50,000 miles by COUNTY. Then I'll know where it's safe to drive.

Ah, ha! I knew before I opened this thread that Pennsylvania wasn't going to be one of the safest states to drive in. New Jersey, however, surprised me!

In fact the worst drivers I've ever encountered in my entire life - including the drugged-up crazies in NYC's five boroughs, Newark, and Patterson, NJ - have all been, right here, in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Which group of drivers constitutes the greatest road hazard? (I base this conclusion on more than 3 decades of traveling over 50,000 miles each year.) That would be young and younger women between the ages of 17 and 35.

These cuties seem to think they have a, 'license from God' to do the most insane things while sitting behind the wheel of a rapidly moving vehicle; e.g.: Using the rearview mirror to put on make-up, and reading or texting while driving, as well as passing on the right, tailgating, and some really serious speeding. All are among the incredibly stupid risks and violations I've watched members of this group take or make, on an almost daily basis, for more than 3 decades, now.

Flawed study.

This is like saying which states are the most educated based upon the total number of schools in a state, even if no one is attending the schools.

Gimmie a break. NY and NJ made the list? Impossible. Among the craziest, worst driers I've even seen. And among the highest auto insurance in the country... for a reason.
