What bothers me are parents who know their kid is a nutjob. He's a weird kid who is antisocial, violent tempered, dark, depressed, etc... always has been. And they don't lockup their own guns. Now it's a completely different story of he's a normal kid. But when he's a psychotic, sociopathic little troll you lock them up. This kid in Newtown was half-a-click from being committed by his mother. Yet he had access to the guns. THAT is a problem. Perhaps this should be laid at the feet of the parent. So how does the Senate legislate parenting smarts?

That part bothers me too. Obviously she knew something was very wrong or she wouldn't have been taking action to commit him. We don't know the details of how he managed to get the guns in the first place. Maybe she did secure them and he managed to get them anyway. Even the best gun safe can be broken into by a determined thief. Circumstances do tend to suggest though, that no matter how he got them, it probably wasn't all that difficult. My guess is that she simply underestimated the danger, but that's just a guess. It wouldn't really be fair to pass judgement without all the facts.

Hey dark, was thinking Haldol D....but of course no good until after the Schizophrenia manifests. Not a doc either...."just" a counselor with years of sad experience with this population. Dealing with a person with Schizophrenia in full break is much like riding a bucking bronco - you just go with it. There is no way to correct their delusions, halucinations, or paranoia while they are in them. Talking them down is a long and difficult journey. I'm with the "There is no answer/solution" crowd. Just isn't. If there were no weapons he'd have strangled them with his bare hands. And amid the turmoil, but overlooked my grandson lost a friend on the highway - 16 years old and he "chose" not to wear a seatbelt. Locally, I lost a former client - 26 years old stabbed to death by a "friend" while they were drinking and having a good time...
