This may have been posted before but I found it on The Sight's M1911 .45 ACP Site. Actually should be required periodic reading.

Rules for a Gunfight

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.
2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap – life is expensive.
3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.
4. If your shooting stance is good, you’re probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.
5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)
6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.
7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.
9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on “pucker factor” than the inherent accuracy of the gun. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. “All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket.”
10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. Have a plan.
13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won’t work.
14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
16. Don’t drop your guard.
17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.
18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.)
19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.
20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.
21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
24. Do not attend a gun fight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than “4″.
25. You can’t miss fast enough to win.

Rule #1 for surviving a gunfight...

"Don't be there when it starts."

All the other rules apply if the first rule has not been adhered to.

Pretty much have all those rules engraved into my conscience since the mid-seventies. IF I HAVE TO ENGAGE, it will be at my advantage not theirs. God help those that force me to engage!

And YES, mine starts a with a 4, as in .45 ACP (SJHP)

At the start of PP classes I ask students "do you have a good plan for bad people?" Possibly the most important aspect of PP.

this is a gun CARRY forum. not to many people on this forum tote carbines around for personal protection

No kidding, some things are ingrained in the grey matter... y'know what I'm sayin'?

That has been the prevailing theory of combat since the M16 was introduced. I have never believed it.
I'll take one solid hit on an enemy over a dozen misses.

Actually, the M16 was developed b/c of the changing battlefield and the nature of combat. During a meeting engagement, the volume of fire is usually the deciding factor... whoever throws the most lead will likely get the most hits, therefore... win the fight. You think you're always going to have a clear shot on your enemy in combat? Not likely going to happen. However, are you going to hold fire until that perfect shot presents itself? You better not, b/c while you're not firing at them... they're firing at you... that's bad. You don't want your enemy to be able to fire back, of course you could say, "well, that's why you get the one accurate shot and the fights over..." but, if he sees you then you had better start packing out rounds and bury him with lead.

Anyway, I digress.... I have it stuck in my head that my enemy is going to be carrying an AK and use PKs to cover his advances.

My bad guys, I'm off topic.

WOW! That is too many rules.

I think there is only one rule to follow IF you find yourself in a gunfight.

Use all means necessary to WIN!

# 1 rule is win at all cost!

My rule is and always has been no matter what. No weapon, weapon, I fight to the death if attacked! Amazingly I am still here. Attitude has a lot to do with winning a fight.

On a seperate note, I'd love it if people could carry carbines around and not be harrassed/arrested by LE.
I can concealed carry a carbine as long as I'm wearing a Navy bridge coat. But the mag will be out unless it is a PS90 type gun.
