Post office carry

It's not only illegal inside the post office it's illegal on the property to include the parking lot.

This is only true if the parking lot is for the exclusive use of postal employees and patrons. If the lot is a shared lot with other businesses, then this does not apply to parking lots or common sidewalks for that matter. You can park in front of the post office and walk right by their door on the way to another business. with your gun concealed or for OC states, in full view.

Very few states allow open carry and since the post office is Federal Property it is a moot point. No weapons are allowed on Federal Property except for hunting where authrized, range shooting where available, and competion where authorized. I cannot carry a weapon on a military installation unless I am going hunting or to the range or to a competion. I( cannot even have my ccw pistol in the car unloaded and locked away on a military installation.

I've had a rifle and a handgun in my trunk when entering a Marine base (Quantico). The rifle was an AR-15 Armalite and the handgun was a Kahr PM9. Both were unloaded. The guard station inspected my weapons then waved me on. I was going to Q-Town (that's the town of Quantico) and had to go through the base to get to the town where there was a gun shop.

this is a fallacious statement, while 44 states may be claimed to allow for OC you can be fairly certain that OC is not common in most states, you will never see OC in MA, MD, CT, CA, in addition NJ allows for open carry if you have a concealed carry permit, however it is IMPOSSIBLE for the average person to obtain such a permit yet groups like the NRA blissfully ignore that reality. Even in states where OC is permitted by law it is rare that anyone OCs.
I am not looking to debate the issue I am just trying to get the facts correct.

This is not true for Virginia where open carry is not uncommon. Open carry gatherings are very common, and I have been to some where there were as many as 75 openly armed people in a restaurant. And our Lobby Day in Richmond is a sight to be seen where sometimes over 1000 openly armed folks mill around our legislators offices, lobbying of for gun rights bills.

the operative word in your post is EVENTS, sure in a large group at an event that is held to make a statement you will see many people carrying openly, we have OC events here in FLA on an ongoing basis where people carry openly.

the question is, is OC common everyday, every place?
do you or do you see people go to wal mart and OC? do you walk into or see others shopping in a walgreens type of business while OCing on a regular basis?
would you ever see someone OCing in arlington? in Rosslyn? in Richmond? in Harrisonburg? in VA beach or Norfolk?

I am far from an expert in this but it is my experience that people BS on forums like this about someone the know who OC freely however I've never seen anyone OC in an urban/suburban setting.

I have seen people carry openly and I have as well in wilderness areas but once you hit population you rarely if ever see anyone carrying openly.

In individual cases, I have seen only a few OC'ers out in the general public. I don't go into Arlington (lived there 24 years and escaped 14 years ago) but I know of folks who OC there as well as Richmond and the entire Tidewater. I suggest that you go to the Virginia forum on opencarry.org for more information about this topic.

This is from Oklahoma's open carry web site:

Q: What are the residency and age requirements for a [open carry] license?
A: You must be a citizen of the United States, resident of Oklahoma, and at least 21 years of age.

Q: I travel to Oklahoma several times each year, do I qualify as a resident?
A: No. A resident of the state is someone who has a valid Oklahoma driver’s license or state photo identification card, and physically maintains a residence in Oklahoma, or someone who has permanent military orders in Oklahoma and possesses a valid driver license from another state.
Governor Mary Fallin - OpenCarryFAQ

Open carry in OK is only for residents with an OC license.

There is no "open carry" license in Oklahoma. There is only an Oklahoma Handgun License.

However, even though your source is erroneous in the terms used, Oklahoma is the ONLY state that allows for open carry by residents only, because of this statute:

§21-1290.26v1. Reciprocal agreement authority.
RECIPROCAL AGREEMENT AUTHORITY
The State of Oklahoma hereby recognizes any valid concealed carry weapons permit or license issued by another state, or if the state is a nonpermitting carry state, this state shall reciprocate under the permitting law of that state.
A. Any person entering this state in possession of a firearm authorized for concealed carry upon the authority and license of another state is authorized to continue to carry a concealed firearm and license in this state; provided the license from the other state remains valid. The firearm must be carried fully concealed from detection and view, and upon coming in contact with any peace officer of this state, the person must disclose the fact that he or she is in possession of a concealed firearm pursuant to a valid concealed carry weapons permit or license issued in another state.
B. Any person entering this state in possession of a firearm authorized for concealed carry upon the authority of a state that is a nonpermitted carry state and the person is in compliance with the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, the person is authorized to carry a concealed firearm in this state. The firearm must be carried fully concealed from detection and view, and upon coming in contact with any peace officer of this state, the person must disclose the fact that he or she is in possession of a concealed firearm pursuant to the nonpermitting laws of the state in which he or she is a legal resident. The person shall present proper identification by a valid photo ID as proof that he or she is a legal resident in such a non-permitting state. The Department of Public Safety shall keep a current list of non-permitting states for law enforcement officers to confirm that a state is nonpermitting.
C. Any person who is twenty-one (21) years of age or older having a valid firearm license from another state may apply for a concealed handgun license in this state immediately upon establishing a residence in this state.

Very few states allow open carry

Wow. You consider 44 states to be very few? That's how many allow open carry. Only 6 do not. 7 if you count DC. Even California allows open carry in rural areas.

The states that prohibit open carry:

TX, AR, FL, SC, NY, IL, and DC

I'm starting to get tired of people pulling facts right out of their ass and posting all this misinformation. If you don't know what you're talking about either research it before you post or don't post about it. There's no shame in admitting you don't know the answer to a question.

I believe you meant to put the word "facts" in quotes above? if they were pulling real facts out of their wazoo, then they would not be posting misinformation. :-)

Guys, I guess it is official and there is no disputing it...... If apvbguy hasnt actually witnessed it with his own eyes, it cant exist or be the truth...

If only we all had this info sooner, we all wouldnt look so stupid....

AZ, GA, VA and VT are all places I've been to and go to regularly, and I've never seen any non leo/guard carrying openly, YOUR MILEAGE MIGHT VARY

I thought the topic of this thread was post office carry. Getting back to the topic, the guy should keep his gun in his car and should park his car on the street, not a post office parking lot, if he wants to stay within the law.

One possible exception that crossed my mind was this. There is a federal law that allows for people to transport firearms from state to state, provided that the guns are locked away in the trunk, separate from the ammo. I wonder if that law would still apply if you parked in a post office parking lot along the way.

The Federal transport law, Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA), 18 USC 926A, does not require that the firearms be separated from the ammo. The law requires that both the firearms and ammo be separated from the occupants of the vehicle. But it would be interesting to see how it would fall out if a person was in interstate travel, complying with FOPA, and stopped at a post office to mail a postcard.

one would think that regardless of the status of the person transporting the weapon it is still against the law to bring the weapon onto PO property

There is a simple answer to this post office question. Deal with post offices that are in small strips of shops with common parking lots and sidewalks. Then you don't have to worry. Just don't go into the post office proper when armed. They can't touch you for parking your car out front or walking by their doors.
