Open Carry

Why would a person want to open carry if they can legally conceal carry?

I checked to make sure my current and valid WA State Concealed Pistol License was in my wallet before responding, and it is, valid until 6/4/2018.

I open carry because:

1. When buying clothes, I don't have to consider whether or not the clothing will conceal my gun.

2. When I leave the house, it's just as easy to slide the paddle of my holster behind my belt, with the gun already in the holster, as it is to slide the cell phone in my pocket.

3. If I am going to enter a building where guns are prohibited by law it is an easy matter for me to remove the paddle holster from my belt and store the gun and holster in my car and rearm myself without having to fuss with concealing clothing.

4. People get to see an image of a decently dressed family man (more than likely with his family) carrying a gun for self defense - instead of only seeing criminals with guns in the news and guns in the movies.

5. Should a criminal happen to be evaluating targets of opportunity and sees my gun, chances are they will just wait until I leave to commit a criminal act - or just go down the street a couple blocks to commit their criminal act somewhere else.

6. If I should find myself having to draw my gun in self defense, it is that much easier and quicker to do so.

7. I like the positive reactions I get about once a month from people who notice and compliment or thank me for carrying.

8. I like to answer questions people ask when they notice the gun, which happens 2-3 times per year.

9. My daughter is proud of the fact that her stepdaddy cares enough about her and family to carry openly for everyone to see.

Downsides:

1. I have to put up with concealed carry only prejudiced snobs who can't resist telling me they have a CPL, they carry their gun concealed and so should I. Happens about once a year in real life face to face and once or twice per week on internet forums.

2. I've had one negative encounter with a police officer - which turned out to have positive results afterwards.

3. A criminal might actually target me to try to take my gun - examples of which are available on the internet at a rate of maybe, and a big maybe, once per year NATIONWIDE.

It is clear, SR9, that you don't really care why people open carry, you are just looking for an excuse to bash it, but others might find the information useful in making their own decisions, so I don't mind reposting a reasonable response.

I carry for my personal protection and that of my family, not a clue why there is so much animosity between preferences of 'how' it is carried, or the simple "because I can" rational. Hell the "because I can" crowd doesn't even have to load it......... oh wait! you actually do carry for protection but still prefer to use the reasoning of "because I can".

I CC 80-90% of the time, don't like my personal choice? Stick it somewhere uncomfortable, it's none of your damn business.

Why would a person want to conceal carry if they can Constitutionally open carry? Possibly because they aren't morally equipped to open carry. May be a lack of self esteem, or some offer reason they feel the need to get permission from their masters. And then there are those who are submissive by nature and pay the required money to do what it takes to legally get a permit. And, yet some just want to look like a victim and hope to kill a bad guy, as evident by their attitude in life. Most states make it easy, few states make it hard, to open carry, due to the people that they elect. I have had 2 C/C permit, now destroyed, and considered them a waste of money. Call it my "Home" and away security system. Do I ever open carry? Almost always, my IWB holsters may be a problem due to comfort, my OWB fixes that, I have a holster with a safety strap that prevents the pistol from falling out when in a work situation. But, normally I'm armed 24/7.

One must understand that there is a difference between what is legal, illegal, a right and a privilege.

An illegal act is one that the government will arrest you for and put you in jail for because they have created a law against that act.

A legal act is one that the government might arrest you for and put you in jail for even though there is no law against that act.

A privilege is an act that you pay the government for permission for, that they might arrest you and put you in jail for doing anyway.

A right is something that the government should have no authority to tax, but they probably will anyway, which any person of legal adult age who is not incarcerated should be able to exercise without fear of arrest, that the government might (and in some cases probably) will arrest you for and put you in jail for.

If a court should happen to agree that your act was exercising a right, exercising a privilege that you have paid and qualified for, or was legal, then you get out of jail.

Paying the government to create the state of privilege greatly decreases the chances of the government arresting you and putting you in jail for performing an act that is a right and should be legal.

Carrying for protection is the end state. How one goes about carrying is a personal choice (as longs as laws are followed) and furthermore, it is just the means to the end state, which I hope never materialize. And yes, I do carry because I can, want to and would no have it any other way. Last three due to the fact that I've completed every step required by laws to claim as so, no one else have to like it, just me and I do. :)
