In the rural areas of Iowa the county sheriffs department is responsible. In the largest town in my county the local police station closes at 12 noon and the sheriff's office serves as the dispatcher for the town too. Most Iowa counties cover 500 square miles and many have only one deputy on patrol. Even though most deputy sheriffs are good people; it is a logistical and economic impossibility to provide security for individuals. If a rural resident feels that he needs security it is his responsibility. Yes, Iowa is a shall issue state. The permit is for five years and covers concealed or open carry. It also serves as a handgun purchase permit.

Sorry, misunderstood your point. I guess we're both in complete agreement... including none of that idiot Biden's "warning shots into the air". If someone's out to do me and my family harm, and my aim is true, my "warning shot" is going to be center mass.

No problem, we're both on the same page. It's just the way Arkansas has written the gun laws here. So even though we have to comply by the law it's all the way it's interrupted. By retreating a few steps backward, getting off the mark, they're still advancing and threatening, I've followed the law and anything afterward his the threateners fault. Thereby a good shoot.

I think a main problem with any scenario and the requirement of being in fear for your life is often overlooked. The guy saying he was not afraid... I personally think its bad wording. Being in fear for your life doesn't necessarily mean afraid, but a reasonable expectation that without intervention harm will be done.

If a couple BGs broke into my house I would be significantly less worried with a firearm to protect myself and my family. So I might not necessarily be afraid for my life, but if the firearm is taken out of the equation I would be. I'm not in fear, but can reasonably expect harm.

That's what I like about Michigan's laws - both SYG and castle: no duty to retreat. If you enter my house there is a presumption that you mean to cause great bodily harm, rape, or death. End of story.

True, but if you were to tell the police that you were not afraid for your life, a possible case could be made that you used unreasonable force.

Like my cwp teacher said, if in that situation the best and only thing you should say is "_______ broke in, I was in fear for my life". Of course in a duty to retreat state there would be more, but that's the gist of it.
