For defesive purposes, any full power 357 is going to put major hurt on anything you hit. Just remember no pointy bullets in tube mags. Except those new lever-E's.

I have a marlin 1895? with a scout scope 45/70 it is a great white tail rifle.

You have a great little rifle there. Lots of fun. I killed a deer with mine back about 10 years ago. I also shot rabbits with it using 38 wadcutters. It's fun to plink with, but my wife won't let me shoot it. She decided she wanted it to go with her 357 revolver. Now I can't find another one right now. Maybe I'll get another one this summer.
