Moving to Michigan from New York--pistol transfer questions

Grettings,
I may be moving to Michigan from NY State and I have a NY State Hunting Target pistol permit. My NY permit is basic and is required just to own a pistol in my state. I can not carry unrestricted in NY, only to and from the range or woods.

My questions are:

1) How can I legally bring my pistols into Michigan and what is the procedure?

2) I just want to transport them and LEGALLY own them in MI. I do NOT want to get a MI concealed carry permit at this time. I just want to possess them legally.

I can find no info on the MI gov web sites on how to do this. MI does not have reciprocity with NY State. Nobody honors NY State permits as far as I can tell because NY refuses to recognize any other states.

Once I change my drivers license over from NY to MI, I am required by NY law to notify the pistol permit bureau of my change of address and surrender my NY permit. This would mean transfering ownership to another NY pistol permit holder until I can legally own them in MI. It's a real pain in the as* also. These are family heirlooms so selling them is not an option. Any suggestions or links on the law greatly appreciated. Thank you.

They may sign in your guns and ship them to a FFL near your new.home when and if your ready to legally take possession again...

Thank god I don't live in NY!!! If MI is like MOST other states, you just have to move there, no paper work, but I don't know MI law, so don't go by what I say lol

Michigan does recognize NY permits. Michigan recognizes all state permits issued to residents. They don't recognize non-resident permits. The length of time to establish residency is 6 mos. You should probably contact the State Attorny General's office for confirmation, but to this layman it seems you can take your guns with you under your NY Permit until you establish residency. Unlike NY, you don't need to register the weapons to own them. The permit is for carry only, not to purchase or posses in your home.

According to the State of Michigan, all handguns must be registered in Michigan, even for simple possession. Are there any forum members who live in Michigan who can help clarify this info for me? I found this:



28.422 License to purchase, carry, possess, or transport pistol; issuance; qualifications;
applications; sale of pistol; exemptions; nonresidents; basic pistol safety brochure;
forging application; implementation during business hours.
Sec. 2. (1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person shall not purchase, carry, possess, or
transport a pistol in this state without first having obtained a license for the pistol as prescribed in this section.
(2) A person who brings a pistol into this state who is on leave from active duty with the armed forces of
the United States or who has been discharged from active duty with the armed forces of the United States
shall obtain a license for the pistol within 30 days after his or her arrival in this state.
(3) The commissioner or chief of police of a city, township, or village police department that issues
licenses to purchase, carry, possess, or transport pistols, or his or her duly authorized deputy, or the sheriff or
his or her duly authorized deputy, in the parts of a county not included within a city, township, or village
having an organized police department, in discharging the duty to issue licenses shall with due speed and
diligence issue licenses to purchase, carry, possess, or transport pistols to qualified applicants residing within
the city, village, township, or county, as applicable unless he or she has probable cause to believe that the
applicant would be a threat to himself or herself or to other individuals, or would commit an offense with the
pistol that would violate a law of this or another state or of the United States.

You can bring your guns with you. The handguns will need to be registered,not the rifles. I think you have up to six months to do this. Do not give your NY permit back until you have your pistols registered in Michigan to keep you legal. Depending where your moving too you need to go to the local PD or sheriff Dept to get the paper work. If your paper work is in order it's a smooth transfer as they do it all the time unless your moving to a small town then it may or may not be.

Thanks shooter57. I'll be moving over a period of a few weeks so just to be safe, I'll make sure I contact the local police dept for all the details before I bring the pistols with me.

I swear. Gov't sure makes it a whole lot harder than it really needs to be. To think a criminal would even give a darn about this. Blows my mind. Than a law abiding citizen tries it and he has to follow every dam rule or risk going to jail and lose his guns. Blows my mind.

Get your weapons permit whenever you have a chance. The more of us is always a better thing.

I hear you. I have three pistols. Two of them were my dads and I don't shoot them much. One is for protection but in NY, I can only use it for protection in my home. I tried to get an unrestricted carry permit but it's real hard in NY. you have to show a reason for wanting to carry and personal protection is not a legit reason according to the judge. I can't wait to leave NY.

Hey, welcome to Michigan. We have some short comings as a whole, but you will be pleasantly satisfied with our gun laws compared to NY.

Federal law allows for transportation through all 50 states if you are moving check details as far as unloaded and in the trunk etc

MCL 28.422 Upon establishing legal residency, you should immediately contact your local law enforcement agency, pass the basic safety questionnaire, and complete a License to Purchase.

Again this is only for pistols... shotguns unless they are under 30in. need to be Reg. Its called PP purchase permit.

Depending on where your moving to either you get this from sheriff office or local PD...

The great thing is, you don't actually have to take your weapons into the local cop shop anymore. Just fill out the application, take the test, and get the permit to purchase (one for each handgun). Then go home, fill in the required info and either mail back the local and state copies, or take them back within 10 days. If you mail them in, send both copies to the local PD, they'll take care of forwarding on the state's copy.
