Did not read all replies so do not know if I repeat, but thread writer indicates he gave his 4 year old daughter a kabar and she should use it if he finds her in her hiding place? Sounds to me like a good way to get a 4 year old killed once she has enraged him with a stab to maybe his arm. Not sure why this thread has been written--seems that situational awareness and common sense would easily eliminate this possibility from anyone's lack of home defense. To have to be reminded of same is like telling me to put on my pants before I leave the house.

More disconcerting than anything else (including the OP leaving his front door unlocked) is the OP's decision to give his four year old daughter a KABAR knife.

Securing the front door properly (in the first place) would've likely prevented the incident altogether.

No matter how "well trained" in "an ancient combat sport" the OP's four year old child might be, I question the wisdom of giving a child so young an edged weapon of any sort. :no:

Glad everything turned out ok and no one was hurt but one thing puzzles me and that is why your dog was so seemingly passive? You didn't say if it had barked, growled or charged at the perp just that it's fur was raised. Your little girl was the one that brought the condition to your awareness. I would add another dog that is more aggressive in that dept especially with kids around.

Use a reputable alarm company like ADT where there are several hundred employees actively monitoring at all times. The link to your PD is automatic, they don't need to look-up a number. Any decent alarm has a battery backup for power outages. My alarm can run for over a week without power. Use a cellular backup. Perps cut phone lines. The alarm system should have a double backup using more than one cell company to roll-over in the event of a cut phone line. I use a large antenna in the attic to ensure the call goes through. These are all standard features used by the better companies. It may be a little costly but it's better and cheaper than shooting an intruder who has made entry.

Studies based on questions posed to convicted burglars shows the majority will move-on if there are motion lights or alarm signs. Most of those that continue are generally running when that thing screams at 140 decibles. My alarm system has prevented a break-in four times in the past ten years. Police response was escellent and I was called as the police were en route. The house across from me was saved by an alarm over the summer. I responded at the same time as polcie arrived as did the next closest neighbor, about 1/4 mile up the road. I use carbon monoxide, smoke and heat detection as well as glass breakage, motion and window/door perimeter protection. Last summer my wife burned a hamburger and the fire department responded within minutes. Embarrassing. There is no doubt that they work.

The drawback is cost. The installation was over $4,000 for a multi-zone wired system and it costs about $70 per month to get that level of monitoring. But you'll be awakened before they make entry and just in time to watch the dog bite.

Don't be so quick to judge all alarm systems based on early 80's and 90's tech! Your not cutting my system. Ours uses a cellular signal, the control box is mounted in our walk-in closet and no signs in the yard. It was also wired during our house being built so no retrofits. Works on battery backup to last up to 5 days of service. Glass break detectors, motion detectors designed to look like wall sconces, and window triggers hidden in the frame. Not your average adt system and cost quite a bit but it is monitored by a local company. When a zone is breached our company notifies the police and then tries the house. It comes through our monitor on the wall so they can listen through the house. Because there are microphones on all three levels basement, main, and upstairs I can hit the 911 button and talk to the dispatcher no mater where I'm at and they can hear any confrontation as well.

When we built our home we had the master bedroom fitted with a steel door to match the others in the house with a dead bolt and beefed up jam. In the case of a burglary my wife can gather the children as I cover with the gun at the top of the stairs and barricade in the room. The ONLY time I'm going to venture into the main areas of our home is if I have children in the other areas of our house. Other than that I have a responsibility to protect my family and I can't do that if I play Rambo and sweep the house.

If they do get through the door then that's all she wrote. My Remington doesn't fire warning shots, not with the current price of ammo.

This forum can really suck...much of the time it devolves into a measurement contest...whose is bigger than whose. I, for one, would never reveal to this forum that I was involved, or potentially involved, in an incident. You would simply have to learn about it in the news. Instead of being supportive in this increasingly 2A-hostile regime, we Gun Advocates turn on each other. Wonder when we will be taken down from the inside...? If a story smells like BS then let it go....it will die on the Forum Vine...but when every person has to call it out then it merely keeps it at the top of the list. After all, there is probably more BS on the forum than anything else. The safe room concept is a great one. Unfortunately, it isn't always applicable. I have 2 stories/split floor plan. At any given time during awake hours, I'd have to go secure my children. When we're in bed, I'd definitely have to roam about the house just to secure my little ones.

No, it is not a joke. It is recommended. Youtube has some great 911 calls that show people warning the perp not to enter the safe room. When he does you hear the shots fired. 911 calls are recorded. If you're doing everything you can to keep the person from harming someone and they persist the entire thing is caught on tape. That tape can keep someone from being indicted based on faulty testimony of what others may have claimed to hear. An eye/ear witness is among the most unreliable of all evidence but a taped 911 call doesn't lie.

It definitely presents a problem. For older kids their bedroom can become another safe room by hardening the entrance and having a cell phone in there. For small kids it's a real nightmare. In such cases we recommend having everyone lockdown who can and quickly moving to get the little ones or others who can't. This stuation represents one of those examples where one MUST move through the house while an active perp is there.

Learn your house well. Know how to move through it in complete darkness. Know where every squeaky floorboard is. If you hear a squeak believe it. A perp may not step on it a second time. Stay close to walls wherever possible as the floors tend to squeak less. This includes moving up or down stairs. Other alerts involve using your nose. If you don't smoke but smell second hand cigarette smoke, believe it. Some perps may have a cigarette to calm nerves just before breaking in. Keep that nose alert for all foreign smells such as after-shave or cologne. The dirtier ones tend to use copious amounts of cologne to mask body odor. Your nose may help you know how cloase the rat is while searching in the dark.

My next door neighbor got home last week and noticed the back door open. He thought his wife had not closed it all the way and that the wind had blown it open, so he closed it behind him, only to walk in on two intruder's one man and one woman, unhooking the TV in the living room. They ran for the front door, but he was able to tackle the woman in the front yard as the man jumped the fence in the front yard and elbowed and a**holed on down the road. Turned out thet were two methheads out for an easy steal to score some meth from a scumbag we've complained continually about up the road. Took the police 35 minutes to respond to his call after he got the woman tied up. He then spent another four hours at the hospital getting cleaned and checked for any meth contamination from the witch he caught. He's also been notified now that the methhead woman is going to try and sue him for sexual harrassment. Our local Barney's, who counldn't find their rear ends with both hands, are still looking for the male methhead, almost a week later now, since the woman won't give his name up yet - plea deal isn't good enough for her yet. This will be her third time in court on meth charges, but she'll probably walk on a lesser plea like she apparently did the first two times. To say the least, my neighbor is POed big time, and his wife is staying with her mother this week in another town nearby.

He's a hunting dog and just over a year old. He's only growled twice that i know of. One involved food.
